Make sure you inspect the car thoroughly and take pictures of any problems. Also, make sure you have an employee see the car to document whatever the problems may be.

Book 48 hours in advance. Majority of the places did not have cars available. One place had last minute cars available- however they up charge all their cars because there are people stranded and can make money

They are terribly understaffed and everyone is in one small area for all of the rental agencies so there’s no clear distinction if it is crowded and you may end up getting in the wrong line. Opt to pay extra money to belong to a club that lets you walk up and have a quick check in.

I live in the Myrtle Beach area, but my car would not hold as many people as we needed it it to hold so that’s why we rented the van.
DavidFeb 2024
Do not rent with Hertz/Thrifty/Dollar. Your only other option on site is Budget/Avis. It always takes forever to get you bags at Myrtle Beach International Airport. Go to the rental car counter first to get your car then go collect your bags.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Myrtle Beach
Looking to pick up a rental car after landing in Myrtle Beach? For travelers with flights to Myrtle Beach International Airport, you will find the rental car desks in the lobby of the main terminal, while the rental car lots are just adjacent to the airport.
Rainy season lasts from June to November, so drivers unused to strong rainstorms may want to be cautious if they are on the road during a storm. In general, the weather is not too much of a problem, but there is the occasional tropical storm that does come through. During such storms, it is best to wait out the weather because hydroplaning can be a worry.
Want to make the most out of your time in Myrtle Beach? Then make sure to rent a car. Myrtle Beach, like many cities in the U.S., was designed with cars in mind. While there is a trolley in the city, if you plan on visiting anything outside of the downtown core, you will need a vehicle. For instance, if you plan on taking a trip to some of the neighboring beaches like North Myrtle Beach, it is just a simple drive away -- assuming you’ve rented a car.
Myrtle Beach, though not the largest of cities, certainly has its fair share of traffic woes. Luckily for drivers, these traffic problems are largely confined to two primary rush hours in the morning and afternoon: from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. During those hours, the 501 in particular can become backed up and congested, as it runs through the center of Myrtle Beach and is one of the major outlets of the city.
Alcohol consumption in a moving vehicle, whether you’re a passenger or driver, is illegal in Myrtle Beach. The law requires drivers to turn on headlights and windshield wipers of all vehicles on the road, including cheap car rentals in Myrtle Beach, whenever it's raining. When near your intended turn location, approximately 100 feet away, ensure you make the necessary hand signals and switch on the turn signal. It is legally not a must to right of way every time another driver gives you a go ahead. Every passenger in your vehicle must put on a seat belt whenever it's moving. You must also stop and yield when exiting a parking lot. This is key since many facilities lack a stop sign at the entrance of the parking lot.
Myrtle Beach is split into blocks; roads running west and east are in numerical order so getting around the city is easy with some basic math skills. The line dividing South and North is First Avenue. The streets around are, therefore, Second Avenue South and Second Avenue North. The numbering of major motorways like Highway 17 Bypass, Highway 17 Business, and Ocean Boulevard, running from North to South, are based on the intersecting streets. Moreover, you can use the Bob and Joe roads to get to most areas in the city. For instance, Bob runs from Myrtle Beach Airport to all the major numbered avenues. It gives you access to Broadway at the Beach, Highway 501, Highway 31, and more.
Familiarizing with the the major highways in Myrtle Beach will ease your navigation around the 60 miles of beaches in the Grand Strand. The main connector roads running north to south and east to west will help with this. Instead of using the traditional 501 to the beach and battling the heavy traffic, take the Veterans Highway, which gives you access to many northern parts of Grand Strand. S.C 544 also heads to the Surfside Beach area. Head to the heart of Grand Strand by taking the U.S 17 Business. Take the smooth U.S. 17 Bypass to Murrells Inlet from North Myrtle Beach, free of traffic lights.

Pick up and drop off were great. Employees were friendly and helpful. However, the vehicle had a tremendous number of scratches (even a big one on the roof)! The car should have been repaired and not continued in service. Even the employee who looked at it was amazed and actually had me take a photo of his written remarks on his evaluation sheet to be sure I won't have any problems when I returned the car.

Booked a reservation but when I got to the counter I found out that there was no car available for me to rent. I also tried calling ahead to check to see if they had cars before I arrived but I could not reach anyone at the local office to verify if there was a car for me or not.
The staff at both MYR and ILM were fantastic. Very helpful and friendly.

Pickup was crowded. Car we requested was not available. Was looking for a 4 door Mazda or similar. We were offered an electric car which would not have worked so we were given a 2 door mustang. The car was beautiful but we needed trunk space and we were unable to put anyone else in the backseat and Ubers most of the time.

So conveniently located next to the terminal and easy and quick to get the car and be on our way. It could have been better if the model car we thought we had reserved was there. Those we gone. But the same size vehicle we were provided was comparable and quite comfortable.
Staff was very nice. Car was very new & rode nice & smooth. The only things that were not up to par was that there were no notes in Thrifty’s system about existing dents & scratches so we had to meticulously go over the car for any damage before leaving the lot. And the exterior of the car was not fully cleaned. Bugs on windshield & nose of car. Interior was very clean.

My flight was delayed and when I went to pick up the car they said my reservation was canceled and they didn't have any more cars so I had to find a car from someone else and it cost me more money I will never rent from thrifty ever again
When we arrived on time for our pickup Hertz didn't have a vehicle for us. Even though they had other vehicles they could upgrade us for free. They eventually did give us an upgraded vehicle after some time. On drop off there was no explaination of where to go to drop off the vehicle. The employees in the lot weren't very helpful. We didn't have any problems with the vehicle.

I had reserved a Chevy Tahoe which is a full size suv and when I got there they told me that the only thing they had was a Hyundai palisade that according to them it is in the same category as the Chevy Tahoe and when I tried to explain to the person that there is no way them two cars where similar at all she said she didn’t have time for that and and that they never had any Chevy Tahoe then I said that the were doing false advertisement and were stealing from people because I was being charged for a Chevy Tahoe or “similar”she said that “it was ok” literally her words. was very rude and just said that if I wasn’t happy with the car I was given just to return it. At that point I just realized nothing was going to be done to help my situation and just decided to politely end the call.

I was charged an extra $59 because I used a debit card. I was told that because I had a debit card and not cc they had to physically speak to my insurance agent...at 6pm on a Saturday. They would not accept my insurance information or declaration page either. Very disappointed, will never use again.

Cons:
The car I ordered was not available. I was told I would receive a $ 200 credit the next time I rent. I have not received the credit yet
There was no line at the pickup counter, I was helped immediately and the woman was so kind. We walked to our van which was clean and ready to go. No issues throughout the week, and returning the rental was a breeze. I just pulled in, parked, and since there was a line of returning vehicles the man told me to leave the keys on the dash and I would get a text later. That was it! Smooth, quick, easy. No complaints.
Did not rent vehicle due to policy that renters must have auto insurance - Agent and manager were extremely rude. I had just been in a car accident and a little friendly customer service would have been much appreciated. I will NEVER use Dollar
