  • Conveniently explore the second-biggest city in Portugal by booking a rental car. Don’t bother with public transport, timetables, or adhering to schedules, but discover the beauty of Porto in your own time and pace. By using a rental car on your trip, you can also easily reach the scenic coast, which is about 15 minutes by car from the center. The Estádio do Dragao is also over 8 miles from the center and can be reached in under 15 minutes by car.
  • Start your trip to Porto with a rental car at the International Airport Porto, which is about 9 miles away from Porto’s center. Companies like Hertz, Sixt, or Europcar are housed here and, for travelers who book in advance, the car will be provided in front of the airport. Otherwise, signs will direct travelers to the rental car service desk within the airport.
  • The Old Town in Porto has narrow streets and many one-way roads, so it is crucial to stay focused and ensure not to drive in the wrong way. Some of the older streets are also cobblestone, which may not be the best for the car, so parking the vehicle outside the Old Town and then venturing into the historic center of Porto on foot is worth considering. Also bear in mind that, while turn signals are often not used by Portuguese drivers, it should still be done. Passing on the right lane is strictly prohibited and can lead to a fine of up to €600 ($675).

Via Verde devices also work on electronic toll roads. However, electronic options like TOLLCard, TOLLService, and EASYToll cannot work on Via Verde lanes.

Nando was great in Porto. Unfortunately the drop off location in Lisbon (at the Tivoli hotel) has limited opening hours and does not offer a way to leave the car in the garage. This meant I had to wait 30 plus minutes to effect the drop off. The employee there was pleasant, the issue was the process.

Terrible experience. When we arrived to pick up the car they wanted 200 euros more for a one way drop off fee. I had read the contract carefully and nowhere did it say we would be charged for this. The rental company was unable to show it to us; they just insisted it was their policy. We left and rented from enterprise and they were wonderful. No hidden fees. Will never book with Centauro again.

We had 3 cars in 7 days. The first hybrid, batteries failed at 5000km. The second, steering vibration on the motorway was unbearable. The third OK. Time wasted, incalculable incursion on our holiday, hours spent returning the two cars and fear of breaking down on the way back to the only centre near us, Porto. Roadside assistance, no help at all. Even with the assistance of tourists info center staff. Price, cheap. But we paid big time in lost holiday time and enjoyment. Never again.

Counter service people were good. Business has hidden charges everywhere. Bald guy wearing blue shirt for car wash company in charge of giving me the keys was really not kind and was actually a huge jerk. Made his business and colleagues look bad by being impatient and storming away when I asked about charges that were not on contract initially.

It was a little more expensive than we expected. What was most frustrating was they asked for a PIN for my credit card. I didn't even know a credit card could have a PIN. I tried my usual PIN 3 times and then got locked out. It's a Portuguese bank, so I'm sure someone on the staff used that bank and could have helped me figure out how to find or reset my PIN in the app. They weren't helpful or friendly. So we had to use my friend's card, which meant we canceled our original rental (cost 26€) and re-rented the car on her card and then we had to add me as the driver for another cost of 25€. If the staff had been more helpful, we could have found my PIN and saved 50+€. (I found the PIN in the banking app later, so it was possible.) The car was bigger than I expected, but very nice.
