In Jerusalem on the street we stayed on, we got a parking ticket because we did not have the appropriate sticker which allowed us to park. It would have been helpful to know about this and to know about ways to get a temporary sticker. If there was a sign, I did not see it or could not read the Hebrew so I ignored it.

You don’t need a car in Tel Aviv - but it is wonderful to have a car once you leave the city. Traffic patterns take some getting used to.
Verified travelerAug 2023
driving is fine, as long as you keep awareness of your surroundings (e-bikes and e-scooters will cut you off frequently, and will ignore stop signs). Parking is more of a problem on many streets, as they are for residents only at night. You'll need to find a private lot to park at overnight. Use the Israeli Pango app (not the international one) for paying for parking.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Tel Aviv
Book a rental car when going on a trip to the second most populous city in Israel to be able to explore every corner of Tel Aviv. With a rental car, travelers can enjoy the wonderful beaches of the city but also drive into Jerusalem, which is just over an hour’s drive away.
Ben Gurion Airport is 15 miles from Tel Aviv’s center, so the easiest way is to rent a car directly at the airport and drive into the center in under half an hour via Route 1. All rental car desks are located in the arrivals hall on the first floor and cars from companies like Avis, Hertz, and Europcar can be rented, among some others. Note that an international driver’s license is required.
Driving in Israel is generally not an intimidating affair and most street signs are trilingual in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Honking is pretty common in Tel Aviv and drivers will use it more frequently, often to show their annoyance or impatience. It is advised to remain in the right lane if driving under the speed limit, and changing lanes may require a bit more aggressive driving behavior than travelers are used to from home.
Using a mobile phone during driving is an absolute no-go in Tel Aviv, even if stopped at a red traffic light. Many accidents in the city are caused by people using mobile phones, and people are fined accordingly high for this -- so refrain from using your mobile phone and, if you need navigation, either ask a fellow passenger to help you or pay a little extra for a satnav holder. As traffic increases dramatically during rush hours (which are from Sunday to Thursday from 7-10 am and 4:30-6:30 pm), high attention to the road is recommended.
When getting cheap car rentals in Tel Aviv, it will be necessary to make insurance considerations, as liability insurance is mandatory in the country. Most car rental companies in Tel Aviv have basic liability insurance included in the car rental contract, with provisions that allow you to pay extra to include additional coverages, such as comprehensive insurance. If you have personal automobile insurance, check with your insurance provider to confirm whether they cover rental companies when in a foreign country, especially for collision damage waiver, which may be lacking.
When booking a cheap car rental in Tel Aviv, you can decide to pick the car up at the airport or head into town where you can find your car waiting for you. Picking your car rental from the airport may have you waiting for long hours for delivery. Instead, book your car rental through KAYAK and choose to pick up your cheap car rental in downtown Tel Aviv, where there are several top car rental companies, such as Hertz, Budget, and Avis.
When driving in cheap car rentals in Tel Aviv with children, it is necessary to adhere to the child seat laws and regulations. Infants below 1yr are required to be seated in rear-facing seats, and if in the front passenger’s seat, the airbag should be deactivated. Children between 1yr and 3yrs should be seated in a front-facing car seat. Booster seats are recommended for children between 3yrs and 8yrs, with older children being required to use the car’s safety belt. When booking a car rental, confirm whether the company provides child seat rental services, failure to which you can use any of the several child seat rental companies in Tel Aviv.

Everything was great, start to finish. Very efficient and the process was smooth. The staff was very helpful and courteous and they gave me a car I love. Just renewed for another month!
There is no problem with Budget, it just the office to pick up/ drop off the car is not exactly in the airport. Is a bit far away, not a huge problem but a bit inconvenient
Being told the car takes Diesel gas would’ve been nice! Advice about using a foreign credit card to fill up at the gas station would also help since its self service and there are a bunch of ID numbers that have to be used at the gas station
Very disappointed by the lack of transparency when I made the booking with kayak. I wasn’t aware that I booked without insurance ! I therefore had to add extra insurance upon arrival ! I won’t use kayak anymore and will file a case for lack of transparency …

The car I received was very used and poorly equipped. Over 109,000 km on it. No cruise control, no apple or Android auto. Basic features in even entry level cars. Especially when needing navigation while traveling Tons of mall dents and Knicks all over . If you showed up on a date with this you would have been embarrassed

Pros:
The car was a hybrid in a country where gas is very expensive. I appreciated that. Too bad the hybrid had to come after the first car that had issues. One of them being a faulty tire immediately when I drove off the lot.
Cons:
Their service. They treated me like I popped the tire and didn’t want to pay. I drove off the lot and the tire lost air immediately. Ridiculous.
