The car had only 3/4 tank of gas, and no washer fluid. I made a mistake when the agent asked if I wanted insurance and when I realized my mistake was given no help to rectify the situation. I accepted insurance because I thought that it was already on the ticket and I was affirming it. Before I left the counter I realized that the insurance I'd purchased had been through Kayak and was not Budget. I asked them to delete their insurance since I already had purchased some, and they refused. The car ended up costing twice as much as I had planned, the staff claimed they were unable to help, the customer service number I was directed to said that the agent had to fix it, and no one would do anything. I hadn't even left the counter. I am very disappointed in Budget, and in Kayak for not alerting me to the fact that if I purchase insurance when I am reserving the car it is NOT the same as the reservation for the car. THIS IS BAD.

When I arrived the office gave me the keys to the car I had ordered. When I got to the car, the car wreaked of marijuana smell. I went back to the counter to tell the woman and she said "oh the prior customer smoked in there." So she already knew there was an issue before I got to the car. She wasn't surprised at all. She had no other cars available except for a minivan. I said well then it wasn't cleaned at all since it still smells, which is ridiculous, because the cars should be cleaned in between customers. She then sprayed something in the car but it didn't get rid of the smell. I had to attend a funeral and then drive 4 hours back to the Westchester airport. That smell was horrible and got on my clothes before I even got to the funeral. I also told her to make a note in the computer that this happened because I didn't want to be charged for the smoke smell when it had nothing to do with me. She just hand wrote it on the contract. When I got to Westchester, there was no drop box for the key in the parking lot - there should be! Instead I had to haul my luggage all the way to the counter inside the terminal to return the key. Overall, I would give it less than one star if possible.

Only one problem with the car rental experience. Budget In Falmouth, Ma is scheduled to open at 8:30 AM, the staff did not show up until 9:15AM. It was pouring rain and a line of about 8 people standing in line outside office in the rain. Calling the location did not help. Mail box was full. Going online with Budget with live chat did not help. Very concerning as many people were headed to airports, a funeral, etc. Car was about 90% full of gas and the car was never gone over or checked by staff. Very poor experience at picking up car. Car itself was nice and clean. Drop off was great!

Great experience overall. The agent at the counter was helpful and friendly. LOVE that there was so little paperwork. Time at the counter was fast. Still pricey however.

Hertz gave me a car that had a slow leak in one tire. It also lacked caps on the valves. When i returned it after two days the young man (not the boss) told me I MUST DRIVE IT ACROSS THE ISLAND, LEAVE IT WITH A REPAIR/GAS STATION --OVERNIGHT--AND PICK IT UP MYSELF NEXT DAY! Even though I had no other transportation. Unbelievable!!. I refused, eventually the boss showed up, and they gave me a much older car (30,000 miles plus), but only after the young woman--a cleaner--hearing the argument, said she knew of another car, which was ready. That second car, though a standard, not the economy size I had ordered, worked well for three weeks. The young woman should have been behind the counter, not the male youth who talked a lot but had an empty head and no perception of my problem or his real j0b. Misogyny?

Wanted (and booked) a one day rental on Martha's Vineyard, MA. Checked the pick up location; close to the ferry. Excellent. I confirmed. The confirmation now switched to Falmouth, MA, where I live. Was supposed to pick up the car on Gifford St. on the Vineyard. NOT Gifford St. in Falmouth. Can't cancel through Hertz; "gotta go through Kayak". Kayak says "no refunds or cancellations, gotta go through Hertz". Horribly run company. Never again using Kayak.

It took us nearly an hour to pick up our car. The office was severely over staffed with just one person there to handle all pickups, clean the car and deal with drop offs. She was stressed out and unfriendly. The person ahead of us took 45 minutes to resolve some issue with her car, so my family had to wait in the hot sun outside the tiny office. When we finally got inside, the person behind the desk had our reservation written down, and knew we were coming (we had reserved ahead and called the day before to confirm), yet she had to slowly re-enter all our information. Then she told us she had no clean cars available, so we had to wait while she ran out to clean out the car we had reserved, which had trash in the front seat, unvacuumed etc. While this was happening two more people came and had to wait, so I’m guessing this one poor agent had to deal with angry visitors all day waiting for her to manage. No wonder she was stressed and hostile!! Avis please support your teams with better systems and staffing. We will find another option for future transportation.

Pickup experience was mediocre. Tank was half full. Left rear tire had low pressure. Cleanliness was mediocre. Desk clerk was absent-minded - forgot she had two customers waiting in the next room. She could not get my preferred credit card to take. Seemed not proficient with check out process. E-toll use was confusing. First desk agent did not explain what messages we would see at till plazas even though we had purchased eToll. Customer service told us to go to an Avis location and get a transponder. That desk agent said none was needed - the toll plazas will take pictures of the license plate and bill Avis. Hopefully we wont see any nastygrams later. Car was very comfortable, and ran well on highways and in heavy traffic.

The woman at the Falmouth location was helpful and friendly. The car was quite literally perfect (new).

Cons:

Personally, I think another sign or two marking the location of the office would be good. Also, I'm surprised how much pen and paper is involved. Speaking of pens, if they're going to require you to write mileage/fuel etc. on a piece of paper when you drop off, then there should be a pen in the car or next to the dropbox!

The Avis rental office was unstaffed for 3 hours despite being open according to their hours and Avis customer service. Customer service could not get in touch with anyone who was supposed to be on shift. I was stranded there for 3 hours before having to book a hotel. Their only option for me was to take a 200 dollar Uber to Boston Logan Airport that Avis would not cover

Kevin was very helpful. Experience was excellent except for moderate wait for vehicle to be prepped. Not the fault of staff, who appeared to be short handed for the volume of work. They provided Uber ride to ferry for us. I’d definitely use them again.

Upgraded car to small SUV cause car was too small for luggage. Ended up paying $95/day more. Clearly taking advantage of consumer. It’s enough for me to choose another car rental company. Drop off was met with poor customer service. Somewhat rude. Not good!
