KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Brisbane
Brisbane is the capital of the Sunshine State and boasts the best outdoor activities Australia has to offer. Whether your preference is to head upstream and take in the winding beauty of the Brisbane River or escape to the beaches that line the coast, renting a car will provide you unrivaled access to Australia’s great outdoors. Don’t miss the opportunity to travel an hour north of Brisbane to the world famous Australia Zoo, where you can see the largest display of the adorable and terrifying animals that Down Under is known for. If you don’t quite have the time to drive to Australia Zoo, consider taking a trip to Daisy Hill Koala Center to see the famous marsupials.
Brisbane Airport is located 12 km (7 mi) from the city center has many major rental companies for you to choose from. Once you arrive at Brisbane Airport, the counters will be located on Level 2 of the International Terminal. If you are arriving on a domestic flight after visiting a different Australian city, the rental desks will be located on Level 1 of the Domestic Terminal.
Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road, so this will be the first thing to get used to. If you are driving towards or near bushland or parks such as D’Aguilar or North Stradbroke Island, be wary of animals that may venture on to the road. Take care and reduce your speed if you do see any animals by the side of the road. Be careful if you plan to have a glass of wine or beer with your lunch and the drive, as the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%.
Rush hour can cause plenty of congestion on the highways leading to and from Brisbane, as many workers commute to surrounding cities such as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. The traditional rush hour occurs in Brisbane between 7 am and 9 am during the morning work scramble, and between 4 pm and 7 pm in the afternoon.
Brisbane attractions are scattered across the city. If you intend to tour the city extensively, looking into cheap car rentals in Brisbane is a pretty wise idea. This is because you’ll be able to move from one attraction to another directly. Without one, you will find moving from one attraction to another tiring since your journey will entail transfers or waiting for other passengers to board or depart. With a rental car, you'll also be able to visit neighboring towns, including Mount Nebo, Canungra, Tamborine Mountain, Maleny, and Montville. These towns — located 19, 48, 44, 57, and 60 miles away, respectively — are up to an hour's drive away from Brisbane’s city center.
To rent a car from a company offering cheap car rentals in Brisbane, you need to be at least 21 years old. You must also provide a valid driver’s license from your home country, which you need to have held for a minimum of 12 months, as well as a valid credit card and an identification card, all of which need to be in your name. If your driver’s license is in a language other than English, you need an international driving permit. Note that you may incur a young driver surcharge if you are under 25 years of age.
Getting a Brisbane car rental would be a wise economic move. If you think it will be cheaper to move from one point to another using public transport, consider the costs you will incur if you want to check out attractions far away from the city. Additionally, consider the recurring costs you will incur if you want to visit multiple locations throughout your trip, not to mention the time involved. With a rental car, once you clear the rental fees and fill up your economy vehicle’s fuel tank, you’re set for your trip.

We are a family of 6 and the Kia has heaps of room for all plus 5 big suitcases in the boot . The staff are very helpful as well.
Great Staff Unimpressed with signage on the location…says Redspot on screen information but almost non existent in the terminal and surrounding pathways and only the smallest reference sign at the pickup location Novice travelers could loose a lot of time in the ensuing limbo

Quick, easy collect and drop off procedures. Very clean and well maintained car. Good value for money.
I am absolutely appalled by the service we received from Hertz at Brisbane Airport. Our wait time was longer than our flight over from New Zealand! There was a genuine lack of care from the single staff member on duty, whose incompetence and inability to use the rental system caused a significant delay. This resulted in us missing our family dinner, and the staff member showed zero empathy towards our situation. Despite escalating the issue to Hertz on social media privately while standing in the queue one week ago, we have yet to receive any response. This level of customer service is unacceptable and disgraceful. I would strongly advise anyone considering Hertz to look elsewhere to avoid a similarly dreadful experience. Appalling!

The car was Matsuda’s CX-3 and I loved it. The key is automatically locked after leaving the car, the engine starts by only pushing the button, and it is fuel efficient. And above all, I could rent the car with no unnecessary options like insurance and road assistance, which I have never used in my life (Most shops silently add those options and it is really hard to cancel them for foreign travers who have no phone number in the country like me)
The drop off part was the worst. I don’t know the guy who took the photo after we drop off the car. He was not friendly at all. He was rushing us even tho we reach there 15 minutes early.

The full disclosure from Kayak on price and inclusions, the non mention of further fees and what constitutes a local booking. Kayak have been the worst ever booking website and will never be recommended by myself to anyone rather I will do my utmost to direct people away and promote their lack of disclosure to all who will listen.

Had to wait nearly 2 hours for the car. We were never told about the fuel top up and got charged a crazy amount, $4 per litre. Not a good experience, would not recommend. Also still got charged for the 2 hours when they didn’t have the car ready.
