The airport is easy to get in and out of. We just went directly to Highway 81 to upstate New York without any difficulty.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Syracuse
It is highly recommended that visitors of Syracuse rent a car, as the city is much more easily navigated in a private car than via public transportation, especially because public transportation options are fairly limited and the city was designed primarily with private vehicles in mind. For instance, if you would like to go from downtown Syracuse to the Lakefront then it is 3 miles away, or a mere 7-minute, but if you were to take public transport it would take upwards of 30 minutes.
Is picking up the rental car step one of your trip to Syracuse? If so and you are landing at Syracuse Hancock International Airport, you will find the rental car counters in the main terminal of the airport.
In the area surrounding Syracuse University, jaywalking by pedestrians is particularly common and should be looked out for. This is partly because of the high density of pedestrians and also because of the many tiny streets in the area. It is not too big of an issue, but just make sure to keep your eyes open for any people suddenly walking across the street.
Rush hour in Syracuse, while not as bad as neighboring New York City, is worth avoiding at its peak hours. The morning rush hour usually lasts from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., while the afternoon rush hour goes from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. As far as congestion goes, I-81 is one of the worst affected during rush hour and, unless your commute requires it, it should be avoided.

Whether you are coming to Syracuse on a vacation or work trip, renting a car in this popular New York city gives you the freedom to visit some of the major attractions that you would otherwise not reach with the public transport system.
With all the major roads meeting in the City of Syracuse, finding your way to the north, south, east or west of the city is never a brainer. All you need to do is take Route 20 which spans from Albany to Buffalo or Route 81 which covers all distances from Alexandria Bay all the way to Binghamton. And if you are looking to catch a glimpse of the waterfall, lakes and boutiques while enjoying some fine dining, then be sure to head to the east of the city. The Finger Lakes to the west of the city will invite you to sample the best of Central New York any time of year. While to the northwest of the city, be sure to cruise to Three Mile Bay Wildlife Management on the shores of Oneida Lake. This is, without a doubt, the perfect destination for family boating, fishing, hiking or hunting.

They charged me for a full recharge of the EV at pickup; however, the car was almost on empty when I picked it up. There were no instructions provided for recharging the EV. The representative was rude at the counter. I asked to get a different vehicle, but the guy insisted another car would cost $75/ day more. Overall, it was a terrible experience and I will never use Hertz or Kayak again.

I had to wait in line to pick up my car for 75 minutes! Due to this, this was by far my worst experience ever renting from hertz. The person at the desk who helped me was excellent, however. Whatever led to the delay needs to be addressed. It was far below my expectations based on my previous experience renting from Hertz.

Tricked me into renting EV. Reservation was not clear that it was all electric car then up charged me for a gas car. I don’t know how to do an EV. Ridiculous.

Hertz moved offices but didn't update me (or the seven other hertz customers who went to the same old address the same day). Hertz gave away my car and then charged me more for an upgrade as my only option. Enterprise across the street from the old Hertz address was kind to give me a free ride to the new Hertz address. I'll def go Enterprise next time no matter the extra cost. Relatability matters!
We waited in line for 90+ minutes to get our car. Management didn't give us any information. It turns out they didn't have enough cars and fortunately, my family got the last one for several hours. No empathy or consideration for customers just standing in line.

Pick-up at SYR ok but staff impatient and clearly not happy doing the job. Drop-off at JFK confusing and a hassle. Signs lead to a former Dollar lot where you are then redirected to the Hertz lot. Plus airport under construction. Very stressful. They should get their signage right.

Pros:
Nothing!
Cons:
There was a huge line at the counter, and a long wait to pick up my car. I was supposed to get a full size car but the only car they had left was a compact. Awful experience!

Pros:
Staff was nice. However they helped as little as possible, but over all the experience was. Okay.
Cons:
The vehicle had a sticker on the door saying it was cleaned. A baby sock was found in the back hatch area, which should have been easily found if cleaned. The worst part was a strong odor coming from the driver side back seat. Terrible smell, I drove straight from NY to Fl. When I got home my wife told me it smelled like baby vomit or spilt formula.
2.0 Poor

Pros:
Not friendly, didn’t have my car, I’m gonna write a horrible Yelp review
They informed me less than 24 hours in advance of pickup that the passenger van was not available. It seems there was a recall, made public in early June. When I asked for assistance in locating a replacement vehicle, no assistance was offered. I attempted to use the chat, spoke with someone I called in customer service, and I followed up with an online contact form. No return contact from anyone at Enterprise, despite being told I would have contact and that this matter was being escalated. To take the trip with our Girl Scout troop, we rented a midsized SUV from Avis and I took a personal vehicle. This more than doubled the cost from fuel. Driving time was increased greatly. The rental was significantly more expensive than what we thought we would pay by reserving in advance. I will not trust this process again.
The pick up was very easy. The vehicle was clean and ready to go.

Pros:
Yes I was greeted at the door for pickup and drop off, no issues, everything went smooth.
Cons:
The car wasn't cleaned well. The car mats were soaked with water. There were two pickles, yes pickles, wedged in between the seats. There was the smell of weed throughout the car. There was a weed spray in the door, called Blunteffects, left behind by the previous renter.

Pros:
Staff said they would drop me off...I was told to be there after 2:30. I was also told they were at the Watertown airport which is not the case and the Sheriff at the airport said they get numerous customers coming there for enterprise. When I got to the right place it was 3:30 because I was at the airport for 20 minutes, on hold with local office waiting for a employee to answer for 20 minutes. When I called again a girl picked up and said I was misinformed by one of the employees and the radius of drop off is 15 miles and no one could take me to Clayton.
Cons:
Staff needs to know the policies. Website needs to state the radius. Staff needs to answer the phone...I have yet to get through to the Syracuse staff to dispute the bill. I got charged 173 and The Syracuse guy gave me paper work for 139
You wouldn't allow me to cancel the reservation, I had to pay for a car I didn't need.

Pros:
Syracuse staff was helpful, friendly, efficient.
Cons:
The check engine light came on while I was in NC, 700 miles away from home.Obviously I rented a car for reliability so I called, they told me to take it to local shop and trade it in. I went to 2 different locations and called the airport location. The only thing the staff would say is no cars were available. Which is fine, but there were no other options offered, no recommended plan of action. This is their car, there should have been more guidance. I drove the car back and it made it ok. Not knowing what the issue was or what could go wrong was a stress I did not need on this trip.
