Casa Montalvo Bed & Breakfast - Cuenca - Building
1
9.8 Excellent (157 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Casa Montalvo Bed & Breakfast in Cuenca, you'll be within a 5-minute walk of San Cenaculo Church and Museum of Modern Art. Featured amenities include dry cleaning/laundry services and luggage storage. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Service was of a very high level, and extremely accommodating of dietary requirements for breakfast. We were made to feel very welcome. Beautifully designed and maintained B & B.
Cons: We had some issues with credit card payment and ended paying in cash.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: B&B in a lovely old house, with all modern amenities. It's located in the centre of the old city, with many sights and restaurants nearby. I was happy I had booked the King Suite, which is facing the street. It is big, light and very nicely decorated. Although the street is quite busy the double windows keep the noise out and, together with the comfortable bed, ensure a good sleep. The owner of the house is very friendly and helpful. She gave me good advice regarding my onward transportation. She also personally prepared the tasty and healthy breakfast.
Cons: With my very limited knowledge of Spanish communication was not always easy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There are four common areas where guests can gather. One in the rooftop. One in the garden. One a front living room, and four the dining area.
Cons: No complaints.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Casa Montalvo was a beautiful hotel full of lovely furniture and nice artworks with interesting spaces to sit including a conservatory looking into the courtyard garden. The rooftop view is delightful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! This is a beautiful colonial home with the sweetest host, Sonia. My mom and I had a downstairs room with 2 single beds and a sliding glass door opening to a beautiful garden and nice terrace. The beds were so comfortable and we had the best nights sleep during our whole trip. It's right in the historic center, but so quiet in the room and very dark due to the thick curtains. Also had the best shower during our whole trip! The room even had an electric heater which really surprised me. The decoration and furniture make you feel like you're in a museum, everything is beautiful and looks to be antique! The sitting area near the entrance is so comfty and homey, great place to read! The outdoor patio has a heating lamp. So many little touches really make you feel nice and cosy! There's even a terrace with a panoramic viewpoint of the city. What more do you need?! Best of all was that Sonia made us feel at home and served us delicious breakfast every morning. Nice plate of fruit, fresh juice and eggs with bread. She even asked us if we wanted breakfast earlier than in the normal hours on the day we were going to Cajas. It's a bit pricey but if you're going to splurge on accommodation at any point on the trip, this is a good value! I would come back :)
Cons: Nothing!
10.0 Excellent

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host was very nice and attentive. The place is beautiful with many real plants and flowers to make it cozy. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the place is safe & in an excellent location.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I loved this place. The room I booked, the King room was just beautiful - a huge comfy bed, lounge, lots of natural light all the old colonial furniture and decor was so delightful. It was a really relaxed and comfortable stay, the staff were all friendly and helpful and Sonia, the owner, provided special personal attention, arranging for my laundry and even drove me to the airport at the end of my stay, which was so lovely. I stayed earlier at one of the 5 star hotels which was fine but this was so much nicer. Would highly recommend! Thank you, Sonia By the way, all the beautiful artwork was created by Sonia, so an extra delight to the already beautiful Bed n Breakfast.

Pros: Felt like home! Staff were lovely and treated us like family. In the historic district, a few blocks from Parque Calderón. Absilutely no complaints.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Incredible place. The kindest staff you will ever meet. Edwin and Rene were warm, kind, gave wonderful advice and information, and were genuinely so happy to help us! The owner is fantastic and so invested in the guests. The woman who serves breakfast is so gracious and warm, and served fantastic food. Compared to typical hotels which rely on sterile modernism and an empty sense of professionalism, this colonial hotel was a beacon of warmth and wellness. A paragon of hospitality, a homecoming away from home.

The hotel looks really nice and the people are very friendly and helpful, speaking good English. The breakfast was superb! Every morning a different delicious breakfast. From the hotel, you just walk two blocks and you’re at the main park/square by the big cathedral.

Pros: Well located in a quiet residential area, 7 minute walk to the old town. Big room, comfortable beds and white bed sheet. Good wifi. Pleasant service, ready to store your luggage. Good breakfast eith eggs, fruits, juice and bread. Beautiful villa, would stay again.
Cons: Next door family did not control their children, crying and yelling for hours and slamming doors. In such cases personell should take care of the situation. Not only children are clients but other people as well.
7.1 Good
Pros: For my purposes the location was great About the people there , very friendly with the right attitude to help us
Cons: No complaints
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The accommodation was perfect. All new and very good quality and functional. Staff willing. Place pleasantly close to the historical center (10 minutes walk). Within easy reach of supermarket, excellent hospital, quality restaurants (eg Golden Prague, Mexican, etc.). Breakfast is great, if you stay longer, you can ask for pancakes, for example, to increase the variety. During my stay there was a slightly more noisy building beside the Hostel, but I suppose it is temporary. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. I was more than satisfied.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I have stayed here before. The place is beautiful and the staff friendly and helpful. It is a little bit outside of the town center, but still within walking distance and was very convenient to where I needed to go. It is a short walk to Milenium Plaza and close to Parque de la Madre where there is a jogging track and many people meet to exercise. Nice breakfast with yogurt, fruit, and eggs. Highly recommended.

Cons: I like everything
4.2 Okay
Pros: The driver that picked me up at Guayaquil airport was extremely educated and well informed. The receptionist gave me good tips for visiting the city.
Cons: The driver came to pick me up 2 hours later from the airport because the property didnt read my email on time. In addition, the staff that attended me at the restaurant during breakfast was disrespectful and didnt served me the wrong breakfast.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: It’s in the heart of Cuenca, the hotel is beautiful and the staff makes you feel like home.
Cons: The beds weren’t that comfortable for the price you pay. The food wasn’t that good either, they don’t have 24 hrs room service. I reached 7pm very hungry and there was only sandwiches on the menu.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property, excellent staff, wonderful restaurant. We also enjoyed tea time and the live piano player
Cons: All good
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property, housed in 19th century mansion right in the heart of the historic center; tastefully decorated, lobby is spectacular; beautiful atrium garden; room decorated with antiques, and definite attention to detail; bed is comfortable, nice shower
Cons: Bathroom was a little cramped, room was on the small side
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We love the beauty of the hotel, privacy, they close the main door at certain hour so it feels like home. Staff was super servicial. Food, environment, facility, everything was class A.
Cons: Some pieces of wood tile in our room were squeaky ( noisy ) when you stepped but we understood since it is an old property ( an old family house )
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I travel the world in my job. I am top status with Marriott and second to top with IHG. And, I also stay in boutique hotels occasionally. This hotel is fantastic! At the top of my list. Stay here.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The maison itself - Belle Époque experience; staff was fantastic; VERY good gourmet restaurant
Cons: Water flow in the bathroom was slow (esp for hot water)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The setting was magical. We stayed in one of the garden rooms and I really just wanted to sit in the garden and literally smell the roses. It was beautiful and very well cared for. The small details were charming-water bottle at night , notes and candies left at turn down in the evenings. We had to leave before expected and the concierge was a HUGE help changing all our flights and hotels
Cons: I entertained a group of friends in the dining room and the food did not match the price or the very nice service. It actually was the worst meal I had on a 2 week trip and was overpriced for the guality of the food.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: There are many great hotels, but I suspect in not many the staff will help you find a doctor, when you get sick (as I did), take you to a hospital, and act as interpreters.

We were then served our choice of eggs and one meat. Yummy! Our room was just beautiful! We had a sitting room as well as a beautiful balcony overlooking the river. We strongly recommend Rosa- who was marvellous!!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The place is very nice with a lot of character great location and an exceptional food served both for breakfast and in the restaurant. Staff was very available and assisted me with calling a doctor, ordering medications and more so I cannot stress how welcome we felt.
Cons: I was not allowed to check out later than the regualar 12h00. As my flight was only at 18h and was travelling with a small baby I found it a nuisance and not the best treatment.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location was fantastic, close to many museums, cafes and restaurants and a short walk to Park Calderon and best of all overlooking the Tomebamba River and backing onto the park and bicycle/walking path. My room faced the river and had a wall of glass, proving a beautiful view. The hotel also has a beautiful restaurant where breakfast is served. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Cons: My room needed better bedside lighting. Nearly impossible to read. Also, my room was a double and the closet was tiny, not big enough to put even a carry on bag. I travelled alone so it wasn’t a problem but this room would have been very cramped with luggage for two people.
6.3 Good
Pros: The staff at breakfast were lovely. The food was good. Most of the staff throughout were lovely. The garden outside our room was beautiful.
Cons: Our room was a tiny dark room. One of the beds had to be slanted in order to close the door. The lighting was atrocious. The lamp beside the bed had to be unplugged (no switch) to turn on/off; this made it impossible to get up in the dark. The room was cold and dank.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. I don’t remember the name of one of the waiters at the restaurant, but he is an asset to the restaurant. I told him not to retire because the restaurant will never be the same: great service!
9.2 Excellent
Cons: Breakfast with few options.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice hotel in Cuenca with traditional decoration , seems like old historial

Pros: Very clean, modern, cozy
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We were thrilled with the layout of the B&B to include the dining room and living room. Our own room was spacious but it was nice to have other spaces to rest and relax. We even ordered pizza our first so that we didn't have to go out. Having an onsite laundry service was a great extra, especially as they wash by the pound, not by the piece.
Cons: Little details - missing slat in the blinds caused light to come in at night; grout in the bathroom could use a deep cleaning.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff and quiet location convenient to everything. Great breakfast each morning!

Cons: The rooms are pretty small, especially the bathroom but for one night it was perfect. I've spent some time in Cuenca before so was just passing through but I'd definitely stay again. 7.9 Good
Pros: The hotel is in a traditional house, with very friendly and helpful staff. The location was excellent and the free overnight parking (8 p.m. until 8 a.m., outside those times at 50c per hour) very welcome. The breakfasts were also good with fresh fruit and eggs. The only drawback is that few of the rooms in the hotel have external windows. They face the walkway within the building. If the lack of privacy/natural light doesn't worry you, the hotel is well recommended.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful common space. Tasty breakfast. Nice staff. Close to everything.

Pros: We got a room upgrade, which was already a good start :-) The room we got was very spacious, small bathroom, but good facilities, and good working shower. The hotel looks really nice and the people are very friendly and helpful, speaking good English. The breakfast was superb! Every morning a different delicious breakfast. From the hotel, you just walk two blocks and you’re at the main park/square by the big cathedral.

Pros: Comfortable bed, great shower and very good location. Filtered water was a plus.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was above and beyond attentive! They helped with everything from retrieving my laundry even though the lavanderia was closed to lending me a pass so I could get around on the city bus. The beautiful historic building is exquisitely restored and decorated with pieces by local artists. The rooftop patio offers a view of the cityscape and the surrounding mountains. If you want to have a luxury travel experience, I advise you stay at Los Balcones!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: It truly is an amazing place, with such a good vibe and a front desk team willing to help with any information that you need. Kind and always with a smile on their faces, Samira and Nico, thank you! I stayed in the dormitory; really huge, comfortable bed and overall hygiene on a high level. It exceeded my expectations and previous experiences!... and Pepe the cat was simply adorable
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: Nothing
Cons: If you want to have some relaxing nights during your holiday don't stay here!! You will have the opportunity between an overpriced room with very noisy windows by the street or rooms with no windows which open to a very loud courtyard. There were glass cubes in the floor in the bathroom which is really disturbing because you can see the light from the room underneath. The staff was not customer orientated at all and the breakfast was one of the worst during our whole ecuador travel.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Quiet and very nice youth hostel with a welcoming patio for relaxing or having breakfast. Friendly staff, available and reactive.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly and enthusiastic staff, they really supported us in all our challenges and needs. The rooms are very comfortable (cosy beds) and clean, we also had hot water. And there is a nice area in front of the reception for hanging out and drinking coffee or tea ( free of charge). The staff speaks English very well.
Cons: Nothing
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location, staff, the cat Empanada!
Cons: No real wardrobe in the room. Room on ground floor next to reception - a bit of noise in the morning from 7.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hostel right in the centre of Cuenca. Friendly and super helpful staff, amazing common area, great rooms. Lots of info at hand and fab breakfast.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A big comfortable double bed in the shared room. It’s not a dormitory, but a large room in the eaves which is split into a few areas. Really great space. Staff were extremely friendly and helped me out when I had my passport stolen. The manager went out of his way to find the local consul’s contact details and see if I needed any more help
Cons: Be aware that check-in is strictly until 9pm only. It means you must get an early bus as Cuenca is quite far from other places in Ecuador. It’s definitely worth it though
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice staff, good breakfast, comfy beds, great located!
Cons: You couldn't open windows in the dorm I stayed in.
10.0 Excellent

Cons: Sorry, nothing bad to say
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Lovely building with a courtyard. Clean rooms and comfortable beds. Excellent location, within walking distance of everything in the centre of Cuenca. The staff are very friendly.
Cons: Our room did not have a window. The shower is an electric one meaning you have to chose between a hot weak shower or a powerful cold one.

7.0 Good
Pros: The staff was very friendly, and the breakfast was very good. The hotel had a nice seating area on the first floor, which was good in combination with the WIFI connection there. We came by car and could park for free a few blocks away in a carpark. First ask at the reception.
Cons: The room was without windows, and bathroom with a small window opening into the inner side of the hotel, made it a bit stuffy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great localisation, right in the center of everything. When I was there, it was in the center of the transport strike and manifestations. The staff was great in keeping the guests safe. And exceptionally helpful!
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We just loved this quaint little hotel. Our room was cozy and comfortable. The shower was fantastic. Breakfast was served with a smile every morning. All the staff we spoke with was helpful and friendly. It’s in a great location. We asked for a room away from the street which meant it was very quiet at night. Please don’t hesitate to book a stay here.
Cons: That we only spent 2 nights There!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location in the old part of town just within a few blocks of everything. The building is a personality onto its own. I loved the original wood beamed ceilings. The staff could not have been more kind and helpful.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was very central to the area; the hotel was stunning; the beds comfortable; the bath towels thick; we were exhausted when we arrived and directed to a take out pizza spot; and even though we left before breakfast hours we were still able to get coffee/tea and rolls.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: A tough couple of days in Cuenca with the political situation but the staff of the San Rafael were superb. Thank you
10.0 Excellent

7.9 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: Breakfast
7.1 Good
Pros: spacious room with fridge
Cons: room at ground floor with windows opening on internal patio. room a bit dark.
7.9 Good
Pros: We had a ground floor room which had a nice living area outside the room which was convenient. Room itself was a little small but workable. We bought wine at the store around the corner and they would open it in the bar and give us wine glasses to use. Bathrooms were small but modern.
Cons: Breakfast was mediocre but worked for us for the 3 days.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location is great!
Cons: It took more than 15 min for someone to open the door when coming back from a wedding at midnight.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: There is a saloon on the 2nd floor that is an amazing area for sitting and also taking pictures before going out.
Cons: The walls in this hotel do not keep noises out. There was a family with a young child that spend much of the night screaming and running around the common areas in during the morning and we could hear all of it from our room on the other side of the hotel. I would strongly recommend another hotel if you are traveling with small children.
