My husband and I took a trip to Scotland, which we were very excited about. We reserved a car in advance, a manual gas vehicle, for our road trip all across the country. Upon arriving to pick up our vehicle, we were told that instead of a manual gas vehicle, they would be giving us an automatic electric vehicle. I voiced my discomfort to the staff at have an EV, but we were assured there were tons of charging stations all across the country and that we could “even charge at our hotel or Airbnbs” in the evenings. Unfortunately, none of the things the staff told us was true. There are not a lot of charging places in Scotland, we could consistently had to drive out of our way to reach them, but also most of them don’t take credit cards. It took us several days and many hours to figure out how to set up an account with the company that owns many of the charging stations, Chargeplace Scotland. Charging at our Airbnbs was also not really an option as it typically makes the hosts uncomfortable, and would get about a 20% charge for charging overnight. We spent over 16+ hours of our vacation either trying to find charging locations, waiting for a charging spot to open, driving to a charging location to find it was not working, or just sitting waiting for the car to charge. In lieu of our spoiled vacation, Hertz offered a $50 rental certificate, which does nothing for an entire ruined trip. I would not recommend using Hertz in Scotland, and if you travel to Scotland, do not let them talk you into an electric vehicle.Reviewed May 18 2023

Pros:Staff was dishonest with gas prices, check their word against the receipt. Also any tiny unnoticeable ding on the hubcap will be changed to you. Scotland is the worst place I ever rent cars.Cons:Service.Reviewed Mar 15 2020

Pros:I called Hertz 2x before I picked up the car, the 1st time to let them know that my flight was delayed 12 hours, and I was told they would still have my car available. The 2nd time I called to extend my rental a day, and they were very helpful, and extended the reservation at very little cost.Cons:Economy Car was not held for me, despite me having called beforehand to confirm it would be. No real effort was made to provide a smaller car when I expressed concern over the huge replacement vehicle I was given (Scotland has tiny roads and they gave me a Volkswagon Caddy). No personnel at drop-offReviewed Jun 18 2019

Pros:The staff member who helped me with pickup was so kind and helpful! I really appreciate her patience. (I think her name was Anne, but I don't remember.) Thank you for the free upgrade!!!Cons:I wish the Oxford office had been open when I arrived. I felt a little nervous leaving the car.Reviewed Jun 16 2019

Pros:The car, a brand we had never even heard of (a Seat Leon), was comfortable, compact, thoughtfully designed, quiet, and a pleasure to drive.Cons:They could have given us a manual or instructions on the Infotainment system. It was not easy to work out what all the functions were and how to use them, and we didn't even find the CD player (in the glove compartment) until near the end of our trip.Reviewed May 12 2019

Predatory SellingPros:The car, the mileage, the drop offCons:Being told 4 times that I would definitely need a bigger car. That I shouldn't even take this car on the motorway since it's too small. That I'll get bad mileage and will pay more in fuel with such a small car. All of these being lies. Also was told I MUST return the car empty. When I tried to ask why she said "that's how we do it here". Later realizing I'd paid for a tank of gas upfront she never mentioned. Terrible experience with this agent and understand upselling, but not bold faced lies and misleading.Reviewed Apr 27 2017
