But I quickly found a favorite: Victoria in British Columbia. With its gorgeous scenery and rich culture and history, I never tired of taking the Clipper or seaplane up north from Seattle. From upscale hotels with fine dining and opulent spas to intimate mansions with fewer than a dozen rooms, there are lots of great hotels to stay in Victoria, and each is a treat in its own way. Many of the finest local hotels offer a nod to the city’s history, with some even located in the former manors of residents. Whether you want to be situated in the heart of the city or wander off the beaten path a bit to explore the area’s many attractions, here’s my pick of the best hotels in Victoria.

If you’re on the hunt for luxury hotels in Victoria, look no further than The Magnolia Hotel and Spa. Widely regarded as one of the best hotels in Victoria, you’d be hard-pressed to find an amenity that the Magnolia doesn’t have.

Located in the city center and close to famous attractions like the Inner Harbour and the British Columbia Legislature Building, you’ll also be walking distance from some of the city’s best shops and restaurants. Of course, the hotel itself is home to an incredible restaurant, The Courtney Room.

In addition to the regular menu, I highly recommend the tasting menu, which has the option of added wine pairings. Book ahead for this fabulous culinary experience – my mouth still waters just thinking about it. Really lean into your luxurious vacation by booking a treatment at The Magnolia Spa.

A National Historic Site, The Fairmont describes itself as “Canada’s Castle on the Coast”, and it's also famous for being one of the best hotels in Victoria. What’s more, if you like to travel with your pet, you’re in luck. This is a pet-friendly hotel, where I once enjoyed an impromptu solo weekend away with my dog.

My favorite feature of the Fairmont is its Willow Stream Spa, which offers a wide menu of treatments inspired by the surroundings of Vancouver Island. Although deep tissue massages are usually my go-to, I branched out and got the Tranqwillow Facial, which combined an incredible facial with breathing and calming exercises.

You also won’t want to miss Tea at the Empress, where you’ll feel like royalty – and can even sample the favorite tea of royalty. The Rose Congou Emperor, which is layered with rose petals, was a favorite of Princess Diana’s.

Located on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel offers some of the most amazing views in Victoria. The stunning oceanfront vistas against the backdrop of Mount Baker are unforgettable. The property takes full advantage of its location on the shore, featuring Victoria’s only oceanfront spa, mineral pools, and (my favorite) heated seaside mineral pools.

The hotel’s restaurants also make the most of those stellar vistas. The Dining Room has just 22 seats, so it’s the perfect place for a romantic dinner or an intimate gathering with friends.

In addition to a tasting menu with a wine pairing and caviar service option, the regular menu is full of delicious dishes made with local ingredients. Some of my favorites are the Hokkaido scallop crudo and the pan-seared sablefish.

OK, so technically Villa Eyrie Resort is located 25 minutes from Victoria in Malahat. But this hotel is a great option if you’re looking for a peaceful spot outside the city proper, while still having easy access to everything in Victoria.

I recommend Villa Eyrie Resort because of its proximity to Malahat Skywalk. A five-minute drive from the hotel, Malahat SkyWalk is located on a mountain above the Salish Sea. Thanks to its Tree Walk and Spiral Tower, you can easily head to the top and be treated to some of the most stunning views in the Pacific Northwest.

Back at the hotel, you can relax at the Tuscan Spa and enjoy a unique blend of European and West Coast cuisine at the Alpina Restaurant. Located at the top of the hotel, the restaurant offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Olympic Mountains.

One of the best hotels in Victoria, Brentwood Bay Resort & Spa has 33 rooms and is so quiet and peaceful that it’ll make you forget you’re in a city. I loved my private patio, which had a beautiful view of the bay. Starting off each morning enjoying room service breakfast and coffee there really set the tone for the day.

My favorite thing about Brentwood Bay Resort was its easy access to the marina and the options to go paddle boarding and kayaking right from the hotel. Rentals are available for small boats, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks. You can even catch a glimpse of Butchart Gardens from the water.

Arbutus Room, the hotel’s restaurant, has a rotating menu and great cocktails. There’s also live music at the hotel on Friday and Saturday nights.

Located in a 1930s Tudor Mansion that’s just a five-minute walk from central Victoria and three minutes from Inner Harbour, Abigail’s is hands down one of the best hotels in Victoria. I’d happily move in if given half the chance.

A charming combination of luxury hotel and bed and breakfast, you’ll feel right at home here. As someone who firmly believes breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I loved the three-course breakfast. The menu is different every morning, but it never disappoints (and the team will happily accommodate dietary restrictions too).

My very favorite thing about Abigail’s has to be its library. Homey and with unique, fun decor, it’s the perfect place to end the day with a good book or by playing one of the board games.

Located in a restored Victorian mansion, Fairholme Manor sits on an acre of beautiful gardens – there’s even a family of deer living on the property. One of the best hotels in Victoria for nature lovers, it’s right next to the Government House and Gardens, which trust me, you won’t want to miss on your trip.

The hotel has only six suites, all of which boast views of the mountains and the ocean. Due to the compact size of the hotel, the customer service and level of attention paid to each guest were unparalleled when I stayed there.

The owner, Sylvia, will happily provide restaurant recommendations and does everything possible to accommodate guests. For example, she arranged an early breakfast for my party and me so we could catch our flight in plenty of time.

Dashwood Manor Seaside Bed & BreakfastDashwood Manor Seaside Bed & BreakfastRank #8

Dashwood Manor’s prime location is just one reason why it’s one of the best hotels in Victoria. Right next to the water and Beacon Hill Park, this seaside bed and breakfast is within easy walking distance of downtown.

You’ll be a quick walk or drive from some of Victoria’s finest attractions and neighborhoods, including the Royal BC Museum, Craigdarrch Castle, Parliament, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s also near Cook Street Village, James Bay, and Inner Harbour.

Formerly the home of two prominent Victoria residents, Dashwood Manor was built in 1912 and turned into a hotel in the 1980s. Many of the original features have been maintained, so a stay here feels like taking a charming step back in time without compromising on modern-day conveniences.

Located in a Victorian mansion (aptly once named “Gatsby Mansion”), this is one of the best hotels in Victoria for a romantic getaway. I loved the large rooms and the excellent customer service – after staff helped us get situated in our room, they came back with tea as we relaxed and got settled.

Although I certainly enjoyed the tea in the room, afternoon tea at the Pendray Tea House was a treat on another level. The tea room is gorgeous and offers a real blast from the past, complete with antique furniture and stained-glass windows.

Located downtown near Inner Harbour, you’ll have easy access to attractions like Parliament, Craigdarroch Castle, and Fisherman’s Wharf. One caveat: due to the age of the hotel, there isn’t an elevator and there are many steps, so if mobility is an issue, this might not be the best choice.

Without sacrificing cleanliness or comfort, Chateau Victoria Inn and Suites is one of the best hotels in Victoria for those traveling on a budget. There are 176 guestrooms and suites to choose from, ranging from regular rooms to penthouse luxury – not to mention dog-friendly rooms, a major perk for the animal lovers among us.

The hotel’s on-site restaurant, Vista 18, and cocktail lounge, Clive’s, are well worth visiting, while amenities include a gym, indoor pool, hot tub, and charging stations for electric vehicles. If you’re tired from traveling or just want to treat yourself, book an in-room massage or acupuncture session.

The downtown location of Chateau Victoria is also prime, with Inner Harbour, the Royal BC Museum, Market Square, China Town, and Beacon Hill Park all within walking distance.
