"Horrible experience. I booked my flight nearly 2 months in advance. Paid in full. We had so much trouble checking in online. I paid extra for reserved seats so my wife and I could sit together. Somehow, we had two different seats. It was a horrible hassle to get us to sit together. They didnt have my reservation or reserved seating. My check in apparently failed and didn't show on their part that we paid and reserved our flight. If it wasn't for my wife getting frustrated and a little wild we would have missed our flight. Keep in mind we showed our confirmation showing paid in full with reserved seating. It was really a terrible experience. I am all for cheaper flights, but I am truly not going to be flying with them anymore. It is a horrible feeling almost missing your flight for an issue that was not your own."

There are other airline options that are less expensive (after you add all the additional fees up) and much more comfortable and hospitable."

The aircraft is always delayed to depart due to beionh last in line after reputable airlines, files the have check in counters in popular airports or located on bottom levels, not accommodating for travelers that missed flights, and last but not least their luggage weight requirements are extremely low compared to all other airlines. The normal requirement is 50lbs and Spirit is 40 so one checked bag is $70. By the time you pay for every single detail you could be on a Delta Airline with complementary Biscotti and water!"

This airline capitalize on your misfortune to make their profit without having to deliver the services you paid for up front! Also, they have lots of hidden fees after you purchase your ticket. Picking your seats so your family could fly together will cost more than the price of another ticket! Don’t forget the carry-on cost of $40 or more! Terrible business practice, they bully the customer because they can get away with it! Do business with them at your own risk!"

Cons: "I'm not sure how it's legal that spirit doesn't include the exit tax for a country when every single other airline does include it in their KAYAK posted price. There is literally a tax window in San Pedro Sulu, Honduras that says for "spirit airlines passengers" charging $47 per person that my family of 5 had to pay to get out of honduras. Continental would have been cheaper. The exit tax for a country is a required tax. Why is the tax included in the KAYAK posted continental price but not spirit? Only spirit airlines passengers had to pay it. That's messed up. Kayak should be more aware that prices they list aren't truly accurate as all the required taxes were not included. I'm not talking about baggage fees or meal fees or seat selection fees which aren't required if you don't want to pay it, I'm talking about a required tax to get back on the plane."
Cons: "They are cheap, at first, but it will cost you. You have to pay for bags. (If you fly Southwest you don't have to pay for bags). Our flight got canceled. Like many others did. We were stuck at the airport for 12 hours. Their lack of professionalism, customer service and empathy made the experience worse. They're policy is that they do not accommodate - ever. Intel from the airport says they are always having problems. Say they constantly cancel flights and that they come up with different excuses as to why. This time was the storm which had already passed and had not affected many of the destinations people were flying in or out of."

I'm not even sure why they were sent?!? Our flight left at the exact time that I booked it for."

Once you pay for bags and seats(!), you've spent the same amount of money as the other airlines, and have had to do extra work. I'd rather pay more up front and not have to pay for each little service. The seats do not lean back and there's not a lot of leg room. I'm short and I was still uncomfortable. Unfortunately our flight was delayed over 3 hrs. This was due to weather, so that's just something that happens, but I was already frustrated so it just made things worse. I won't use Spirit again."
Pros: "Finally - an airline got it right! My husband and I appreciated that we only paid for what WE wanted to use. We did not have to pay for what the airline thought we might want. They got rid of the horrible airplane food that we always felt obligated to eat because we paid for it. We never used the screens in the seat back because we are readers. Also - when was the last time you heard the captain announce that the flight arrived early!! While the seats are a little tight, we didn't mind it. Will fly them again in the future."

Their website shows the free carry-on measurement without indicating the wheels or handles inclusion, but you'll find that part in the small print below, and then at the gate, they have you "flagged" because you didn't pay an extra fee for a checked bag. When they scanned our boarding passes, they immediately told us to step aside to measure our bags, telling us to pay $130. We ripped off the wheels and handles in front of them and they still harassed us over a sixteenth of a inch piece of plastic that made it slightly too wide to fit into their frame/mold...1/16th of an inch! Rediculous!! We will never fly them again! Be warned!"

When boarding, 3 people had the same seat, one of the crew members solved the problem because luckily the flight was not a 100% full. 0 entertainment for the 6 hours flight (it was the same plane from FLL to Houston and San Diego) so I had to try and sleep (which was impossible). When I felt thirsty and wanted a cup of water, they told me it was a $3 dollar charge per bottle, I've never been denied water in my whole life, I found it nonsence. Overall, I would never fly Spirit again."

Cons: "seemingly all the rows of seating are too short. i'm only 5-11 tall and my knees were constantly against the seat in front of me. i sat in the middle seat on row 22. the lade next to me sat on the isle and even her knees were hitting and was uncomfortable. at one point the person in front of her leaned his seat back and it was all completely in her space, make her extremely uncomfortable. we had to ask flight attendant to ask the man to put his seat up some to give her some more room and comfort."

On the flight the seats are too close and they did not recline; my flight was little over 3 hours and I was so ready to get off the plane 5. Flight attendants were not approachable 6. Cons: "The flight was delayed 30 mins and since my conncetion was so tight, I missed my flight to New Orleans from Ft. Lauderdale. I was re-booked on a flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Atlanta for a 8 hour layover. Once aboard my flight to New Orleans from Atlanta, a mechanical issue left us sitting on the tarmac for an additional two hours. My scheduled six hour trip turned into 16 hours. This caused me major inconvenience as I was forced to take an unexpected day off from work. Despite me loosing a day's wages, Spirit Airlines was unable to make any concessions. I paid in full for my checked luggage, despite souvenirs being broken, and was forced to pay for any in-flight beverages & food. Spirit Airline staff was clearly not accommodating nor friendly. Soft drinks and snacks were costly."
Cons: "Upon arrival to the airport, I was told to stand in a line. Once I flagged someone down and asked if I could use a kiosk since I was not checking a bag, they directed me to the right location. Upon attempting to check-in, the kiosk printed a ticket that read "see attendant." I was placed on a line to wait again. Once I finally reached the attendant she told me that I was late in checking in. Apparently, the system does not allow you to check-in less then 45 minutes before departure and I was one minute shy of that. The then proceeded to tell me that I could not get on the flight despite having time to make it and would be charged a $100 rebooking fee. I was livid. I had to wait over six hours for no reason. My seat was empty when the plane took off. There was no reason to keep me off the flight."

Cons: "Firstly, I understand a discount airline will try it's best to place fees anywhere possible, but it seemed as though I was living in the fine print. Concerning luggage fees, the staff at every counter had a different opinion on what could be considered a personal items. While heading to LAX had one standard, returning to IAH had another. Rules seemed to be arbitrary. For example, a backpack was ok, but wheels on a backpack might change it's "category." On the speakers, "small backpacks" was permissible, but this is subjective. This is in addition to the fact that some Spirit employees told customers "any backpack is okay because it's a backpack." I fly frequently and have the smallest lightest carry-on case made by Hershey. I have never had problems with it's dimensions. It BARELY poked it's top out of that cage-fitting stand. I mean, it skimmed the top. Really, it was the handle that peaked out. I should have taken a picture. I had to pay $65 dollars for that one. Then, another $65 for a small backpack for my little cousin because it had wheels that couldn't retract! 2) The obvious confusion on whether to use kiosks or not was also apparent. People did not understand if both were needed. The confusion resulted in people asking other people to watch their luggage while they went over to the kiosk! In a post-911 world, this is not only poor airport etiquette, but downright dangerous. There should be signs stating: "If you need to check-in luggage, print and get in line, unsure if you need to pay, get in line, or if you have one personal item (showing measurements), print your boarding pass and continue to security. 3) No complimentary anything is given during flight. Sell. Sell. Sell. I and the three family members that accompanied me will NEVER book with Spirit again."

Very little space on airline, small tray tables and no backseat pockets for you to store your water or anything like that. Spirit over books flights and scares passengers by causing them to think their purchased flight isn't definite. Bribes people with free round trip flights to fix their mistake but even I wouldn't want their free flights because my experience with them was that horrible I wouldn't want to suffer through another Spirit flight."

Cons: "Where to start... I understand the concept of a base fee and you pay a la carte for everything else but this only really works for a single person traveling with a small personal item ONLY. You are literally charged for EVERYTHING. Which is mostly stated on their website with the exception of the checked bag and carry on fees of $50 and $55, respectively. Those fees can vary depending on who you ask....And even though they say you can save by using the kiosk ($20 to go to the counter), we ended up going to the counter anyway because the kiosk could not complete our transaction!!! On our return, we had to go through customs which requires you to get your checked bag (decided to save the $5 and check it on the way home), go through customs and then drop off your checked bag to continue your flight. Well, the Spirit representative decided it would be a great time to take a break and be completely MIA from their post. We had to go completely out of the terminal and back to a counter to recheck our bag. Resulting in a very close call on not making our connecting flight. The long and short of it all: We "Saved" $100.00 total on the initial ticket purchase. We paid over $220.00 ADDITIONAL to have our one carry on and sit next to each other ($20.00 each seat, each leg of trip). Never flying Spirit again and have been telling everyone not to. Bad Spirit!"

Cons: "The woman working the baggage claim area was so rude and acted like she didn't even want to be there. My luggage was ruined (they ripped open the top of the suitcase and there was a huge hole in it) and she said all she could do is give me a $25 credit for our next flight and we'd have to put through a claim first and wait. Then when we asked for a supervisor she said there's no point in calling him because he won't help us. The supervisor finally came and refunded us what we paid for our luggage but that still doesn't even come close to covering the cost of our luggage."

Cons: "The employees at the gate were extremely unorganized, and played a confusing back-and-forth game on the intercom during the boarding. Although the attendants were curtious to those in need, they lacked in competence. Many passengers either a) could not follow instructions as request, or b) control their children. The attendants just seemed to let it slide, an not show any enforcement. In lieu of the 5-7 minute announcement touching on passenger safety, and respect towards fellow customers, a little more effort from the employees would have gone a long way on his flight. Finally, once we arrived, our gate was occupied. Then, the jetwave operated did not show up for some time. Therefore, we did not disembark the plane until an hour after landing. Apologies for the lengthy complaint, but this seems to be a trend for Spirit, and it's a bit ridiculous. However, thank you for getting us to our destination safely."
Cons: "The flight was delayed 2 hours and they did not communicate this information very well. I was told to go to gate L7 and waited and waited without any information. Then they told us to go to gate L1 and then to go to gate L11 - it was very disorganized . The employees were not helpful and they seemed annoyed at all the questions. It was very crowded in the terminal and they kept telling us to move back to let other passengers off the plane but there was no where to go. All in all it was not a good experience to fly with Spirit."

Cons: "I arrived to checkin in my bag early so I could relax in the airport only to be created with a sign stating that no one would be available to assist me until 4 PM which was two hours later? I then proceeded to pay by the kiosk to check my bag to be safe but then was unable to leave it. I then had to still carry the bag around only to return and be at the back of an extremely long line of people waiting. I finally get through then proceeded to my gate 17 to checkin. Once one the plane I noticed several people with bags the size of mine as carry on which meant I just wasted $52. I was extremely disgusted because I could have possibly had this issue resolved and saved my hard earned money if someone was at the baggage checkin desk."

Then ground crew dud something to knock out a flight display screen in the cabin. 45 mins later the screen is fixed, but we're waiting on paperwork. 30 mins later paper work is complete but we need a new passenger count. 30 to 45 mins to get a passenger count! Meanwhile the flight crew is snippy, but they serve a thimble of water and cookies. Finally they offer $50 vouchers for your next flight, you just have to get in contact with "Adam" who is somewhere around the airport we just left. So. . . Yeah."
Pros: "My flight from San Diego to Houston, TX was Awesome minus the seats, couldn't get comfortable! I'm tall, so my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me. That's really my only complaint! Oh my bad, I forgot to add the ticket counter..the ticket doesn't open until 5:45 so as a result of that, the line was super long! Free bags and head of the line privileges(Military), quick cheap flight from San Diego to Houston at the last minute=winning! If Spirit continue to improve their airline and I can get an exit row, I will be taking this flight more often!"
Cons: "Long lines, due to Spirit opening less than two hours(5:45) before their morning flight( it builds anxiety of missing the flight), you pay for refreshments, and the lack of comfort because of the seats being too close!"

Cons: "I believed and considered it a rip off having to check 3 other bags that weight less than 20 pounds at the chk in and charged me $50 each . I only had to chk in a big luggage that weigh 45 pounds and paid $55.00 going to Houston Texas then to sandiago California. How is it that i was able to carry on my other three small luggages (one per person.....a total of three people ) to then charge me .....$211.00 coming from sandiego back home? The gentle man who chked all my bags said " I got lucky at the begining of my trip !!.....WHAT IS GOING ON ? ....I have been flying spirit for over 20 years and i have NEVER encounted such horrable service that alone charged a ridiculously price for my small luggages. .....I will never fly spirit airline AGAIN ......."
Cons: "Check in at Atlanta airport was a mess - there were several lines and it was not clear which line i should take to check in for my flight. Despite i arrived 2 hours before take off, I almost missed the flight."
Pros: "The woman at the airport desk was wonderful and very helpful. She took off 10 dollars from each bag because she said she could see that we tried to login. She put notes in the record and said we could possibly get more refunded but I have not heard from anyone about it. Now I get to call and be on hold for ever. She also informed us that the flight confirmation number we had was a kayak, not spirit number???????? There was no indication about this. Also boarding was very efficient."
Cons: "When I purchased the ticket from Kayak I was not informed about the need to purchase a seat or bags or given the opportunity to do so. There was no notification that one could not have a personal item and a small bag -- only one. When I tried to get my boarding pass on line, I was unable to do so. At that time I learned about the baggage policy. The system had me in a loop that I could not get out of. I was not allowed to request an account so I concluded that I might have gotten one when I logged in. I tried to sign in repeatedly and asked for a new password because it kept saying it was wrong. I never got it and I had to leave for the airport or risk missing the flight. So, I was charged $40 per bag (two of us were flying) for both the outbound and return trips. That is roughly twice what I would have been charged if I had been informed and had been given the chance to buy the bags when I bought the ticket. It would have been much cheaper to buy a ticket on another carrier once I paid 160 for two small (what would easily fit in overhead). I had a carry on (personal item) so had to pay. Our flight was delayed and the gate was moved several times. We were not kept informed about the weather conditions, the fact that the plane was on the ground, or what time the flight was supposed to arrive after all the delays. The flight crew was too busy visiting with each other to deal with a problem in the seat next to me -- I kept trying to get their attention. A tall man kept his feet in the aisle and, most importantly, he was talking loudly on his cell phone until the plane was barreling down the runway to take off. They had told us to put electronics in flight mode way before that. He just kept talking. I tried to get the crews attention but no problem."
Cons: "Do not understand their business model. Spoke to numerous people coming and going and everyone was upset about something. All of the hidden costs were the most mentioned along with frequent flight delays. Never fly Spirit with a connection! But it all trickles down. Because their luggage size and weight standards are less than the industry standards [Scam] and the attending charges check in is at a snails pace. Took us 30 minutes to check in with no line because one person was unpacking their bag to get under weight charge. Also since they are dealing with irritable and angry customers all day long the employees attitudes are terrible. The most common remark I heard, and I concur, was I will never fly this airline again. This is the part that leads to my confusion of the overall business model. At some point you run out of first time customers."
Cons: "Pay for your luggage, Pay for picking a seat, Pay because you luggage weighs too much, Pay for priority boarding, donate to help make them greener, donate! really? Ha! Finally, the fact that the seats are so narrow and so close to the seat in front of you. It is almost impossible to get in with out falling all over yourself and the person next to you has their elbow in your side and I am not a tall person and my knees almost touch the seat in front of you and because they are so close together, they do not recline anymore. Thank goodness the flight was only 2.5 hours!"
Pros: "We were able to fit our duffle bags under the seats, so we did not have to pay the extra $55 each to have a bag with us."
Cons: "They did not even offer a complementary glass of water and instead tried to charge us $3 each to have water on the flight. The no carry on baggage policy is just a scam for them to get more money and we heard multiple arguments between passengers/crew over baggage charges. In general, the crew was argumentative, making the flight a less than pleasant environment. The actual plane was outrageously uncomfortable for a multiple hour flight -- the seats didn't recline and there was no sort of headrest cushioning."
Cons: "I was seated in an aisle seat (5D) with two morbidly obese men sitting in the middle and window seats next to me. Both men were over six feet tall and approximately 350 lbs. Neither one fit in the dimensions of their seat, therefore I was forced to relinquish a third of my seat. Question: Why don't the airline personnel require these people to purchase 2 seats? You can post a notice online (where most of us buy our tickets). If passengers exceed certain ht/wt parameters, they must buy 2 seats. You enforce bag size/wt. restrictions. Why not people?Obesity is epidemic in our country. I consider it false advertising when Spirit tells me I am purchasing a seat...I paid full price for one-half to two-thirds of a seat."
Cons: "Seats don't recline and are close to each other. I didn't have much leg room, and I have short legs. The food was the standard fare -- soda pop, chips, etc. but you have to pay for it and they only take credit cards. That brings up my biggest dislike for Spirit: charging for everything. The ticket was lower priced than any of the other airlines I could find. The reason why is that they charge for everything. Carry on bags are $45 if you check in online, and $55 at the airport (that's each way.) Checked bags cost money. Want to pick your seat? That will cost you. Want a drink and snack on your 3 hour flight? Give us money. In the end, it actually would have been cheaper to fly on another airline that offers free carry on baggage and complimentary snacks. Then there's the check in procedure. I tried to check in online. Got my seats picked out, 1 carry on, things were good. I even opted to rent a car through them because they offered a rental at a really cheap rate (but the taxes and fees were twice the cost of renting the car, which they don't tell you up front.) Got to the point where you print your boarding pass and got a message saying "something went wrong (gee it's so hard being popular.)" Too many people using their website at once. The message said to print out the message and take it to the counter to avoid being charged a fee at the airport. OK. Went to the airport to finish checking in, showed the print out to the person working there, and was told to use a self-check in kiosk. I went to the kiosk, and found I had to start over. Picked out my seats (different ones than the one I had picked before,) claimed one carry on at a higher price, and called the Spirit employee over. She said that because it didn't work online, I had to pay the higher fee. Total BS! I won't fly Spirit again, that's for sure."

Cons: "My issue is with the purchase of my flight and the failure of your website to make the need or lack of need to purchase additional items. I purchased through orbitz and was not allowed at that time to advise of my need for wheelchair assistance or pick a seat. I got on your website and ended up purchasing an aisle seat to accomodate my disabilty and paid to bring on a carry on bag. The bill indicated i was charged twice so i had to call when i was informed i did not have to pay for a seat and i did have to pay for tge caary on. I could not figure out your system and most likely will not fly on your plane again because of that fact. I paid an extra 45 to accomodate a disability which is unsettling but more a problem when you cannot figure out the additioal charges until it is too late to cancel them. Then, on a plane that was not full, they gave my seat to another passenger which t ook quige sometime to fix"
Cons: "The connecting flight was tight. No one informed us about delays with baggage. About 40 of us missed our connecting flight to NY after kindly being expedited through immigration and sprinting to the gate. There were no reparations made for the miscalculation and I had to buy another flight to NY from a different airline just to get out of FL. The airline still does not recognize any fault. Totally appalled at the level of competence and customer service. I will never ever fly this airline again."

Cons: "They don't disclose that it costs $45 to carry on a bag and $65 to check it. You pay extra to chose a seat assignment and you are charged extra to check in in person at airport. The parking attendant told me that Spirit cancelled an earlier flight because they didn't have a flight attendant and on my return trip the flight was delayed by more than 3 hours. Almost impossible to get someone on the phone to cancel the flight. The seat spacing is extremely tight and seats do not recline. A can of Coke is $3."
Pros: "Spirit's $199 round-trip fare was very reasonable, especially since I was traveling Christmas Eve at the height of the holidays. (I should add that Kayak.com's review, which they emailed to me, is poorly written. If they're assigning my critique 5 categories, Excellent, Good and Okay are clear.... but "Poor" and "Mediocre" are too similar. Kayak ought to buy a thesaurus. Which is a worse or better rating, Poor or Mediocre?? Way too vague!)"
Cons: "At my gate at LAX, I got on line because Spirit said my flight to Houston was boarding soon. Then the video screen said, "Flight and boarding time delayed 45 minutes." Fine, delays happen. I rejoined the line later, but the "delayed 45 minutes" had vanished from the video screen, which now said "CLOSED." Damn, did I miss my flight because the delay was cured and the original boarding time reinstated? (No, but it looked that way.) None of Spirit's constant speaker announcements explained anything. So my fellow passengers and I waited there confused. Finally, with the long line barely moving, my gate's video screen changed to "Spirit Flight to Denver boarding in 1 hour." Did I miss my flight? (No, but it looked the way.) Congratulations Spirit, on putting the 100 passengers standing in line into a panic. Your pathetic lack of communication is abominable. Haven't any Spirit employees ever flown your airline and noticed how inept the service is? Even my flight attendant was curt with me when I politely requested a soda. Moral: Spirit's price is wonderfully affordable, but you get what you pay for."
