Scores according to KAYAK customer reviews
Cons: "There was cigarette smoke in the aircraft."
Pros: "The entertainment system was good."
Cons: "We have a 4 month old and we were the first ones to check in but all bassinet seats were booked. No one was even using them for bassinets. Not sure if they paid extra for those seats to have leg room but we had to hold the baby for 15 hours. They couldn’t do anything for us."
Pros: "Very comfortable seat. Excellent service. clean toilet."
Cons: "Food."
Pros: "Cabin smelled nice"
Cons: "More languages spoken"
Pros: "Nothing much good to say about this flight"
Cons: "They were rude and cater to Chinese... didn't give me the proper documents. Took forever until i found a helpful Thai to determine documents that should've been given to me at gate. Even tho i had business class on the first leg, they wouldn't let me in the lounge for the layover..."
Pros: "It’s hard to complain about the comfort when the price of the flight was so good."
Cons: "Audio headphones provided for the inflight TV service were kinda bad and it’s a special plug so regular wired headphones we use in the US don’t work. Not a complaint just an observation"
Pros: "Flight was quick"
Cons: "Chairs were small and uncomfortable."
Pros: "Amazing crew for such a long flight. Nice to get fed too."
Cons: "On line check in could have been simpler"
Pros: "Boarding was fast and efficient. Flight was on time leaving and arriving. Meal service was efficient."
Cons: "Crew wasn't rude but wasn't overly friendly. They seemed responsive. A bit stingy on the drinks (I only had water and each time got only 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup). We pre-ordered vegetarian meals and they did supply them, but they got the orders wrong (we ordered different types of meals and only got one type). The biggest issue is the layover. China Eastern does not supply a hotel for long layovers. We applied from their website beforehand, but they canceled the hotel program. They did supply vouchers for food which was nice, but in Terminal 1 there is no resting lounge to lie down or clean up in, except for the VIP lounges which we didn't have access to."
Pros: "I thought kayak would send a reminder to the flight"
Pros: "Distance between the seats"
Cons: "Boarding via a bus"
Pros: "MU588 goes a north pole route, which appears to be less turbulent than (the previous) MU587 which goes north Pacific route. Because of that it takes also slightly shorter than Mu587 (about 15-30 mins). Overall speaking the service is decent and quality though taking a long haul flight is never an enjoying experience for me."
Cons: "In the economic cabin the space is not large enough, in a long haul flight, this might cause tiredness. One thing I don't like is (not just this flight, but in almost all china eastern flights), that the captain typically does not speak. All the announcements are either pre-recorded or made by flight attendants."
Pros: "Did not like the airline or personnel at the airport at all. Not helpful. Treated like ssssssss"
Cons: "Everything"
Pros: "12 hrs went by fast, I was comfortable in my window seat, great movie selection and edible food!"
Pros: "Like the extra legroom seated in an exit row."
Cons: "Way too many announcements. Many were not comprehendible. Gate changes were not announced and continuously kept happening with China eastern airline. They were not efficient with bag storage because people’s bags were all ending up in different aisles."
Pros: "I like that it boarded on time and the crew were nice in giving us their vegetarian food seeing we failed to book it ahead of time."
Cons: "It was a bit hot inside, their was not constant service, the entertainment has been the same for awhile no updated movies, tv show, games etc and the food was not all tasty, serving just pork and shrimp is poor."
Pros: "I iike the 777 over the airbus. Good movie selection."
Pros: "None"
Cons: "We weren’t on the flight because the airport security said there was no boarding information for us."
Pros: "Very comfortable seats, several meals served."
Cons: "China eastern is the absolute worst airline I've ever flown. They constantly chnage your flight. Which causes people to miss connecting flights. There was a whole group of us that were hauled off to a hotel for the night which had the worst heat everrrr. It was freezing! We slept in several layers of clothes. It was their fault we missed our connections. Our flight coming home got delayed again. Crew is rude and rarely even smile. Their ability to help you or explain things is poor. The plane is beautiful and actually comfortable though and they do feed you. The food was not bad."
Pros: "It saves so much time getting to Toowoomba. The flight crew are friendly and you get a complimentary snack pack and drinks - unlike so many domestic flights these days. It's rarely full so you can normally get a row to yourself if traveling alone."
Cons: "The seats aren't the most comfortable - but no airline really is. It's a small plane so it is extra noisy. If you have noise cancelling headphones, wear them! It will make such a difference."
Cons: "Seats did not recline. (Overnight flight.)"
Pros: "great movies"
Pros: "Complimentary in flight wifi"
Cons: "Couldn’t use iPhones... even on airplane mode"
Pros: "Boarding was instant. The plane wasn't full, so many people moved seats and sat comfortably. The plane was modern, with comfortable seats, and tv screens on the seats."
Cons: "The only minor drawback was the food wasn't awesome. But good flight anyway."
Pros: "Great price with decent service."
Cons: "Overall no complains."
Pros: "I liked the food and how punctual the flights were."
Cons: "I didn’t like being cramped a bit during flights."
Pros: "Good leg room and a comfortable seat. Attentive staff."
Cons: "Did not have individusl entettainment consoles so for 12.5 hours watched looped cat videos, Chinese drama trailers and whete the plane was on a group overhead screen. Now the poor translations did make that fun for the first hour...but the situation became extremely boring for the remainder of the trip....so bring your own entertainment!"
Pros: "The cabin crew were all very attentive. You just rang the call button and they came quickly."
Cons: "The food served was not that appetizing. I realize it is airline food, but not enough to fill you up. The deserts were not that tasty. The crew served soft drinks with no ice and give .you only 1/2 a glass full. Should give you a full can because you get thirsty quickly."
Pros: "Plane was loaded quickly, and efficiently..pulled away from gate a little ahead of schedule. Friendly crew."
Cons: "Food just Ok...bread rolls always served at the end of the meal, instead of with the meal."
Cons: "I got home safe. That's it."
Cons: "Cabin Crews mostly did not know how to speak english."
Cons: "My luggage from SFO (via HKG) was not loaded in HKG on the same flight and arrived the next day. They don't forward it to my hotel in Shanghai, do I had to head down back to the Hangzhou airport to pick it up and take the train back to Shanghai. No apologies from the airline ever."
Cons: "We waited nearly two full hours for our bags to be delivered. And no explanation given--at least not that I heard. An agent was sent out after 90 minutes or so, but she gave no explanation, only that the bags were "coming." (She did apologize profusely.) I understand that things happen, but this was a black eye for the airline. Everything else was great."
Pros: "unlimited movies games and entertainment in headrest. food was good and hot portion was hot cold portion was cold. blanket and pillow available upon request. seats were comfertable."
Cons: "seating was close. was given a meal after an hour into flight and next meal was given ten hours later. this is unacceptable."
Pros: "Plane was reasonable and comfortable, modern, good entertainment"
Cons: "Delay in getting into Shanghai caused 24 hour delay there. China Eastern put me up in a hotel, but 24 hours wasted. Minimum 2 hours in Shanghai if you want to make it - terribly busy airport, and most planes boarded and deplaned by bus"
Pros: "Um, I'm thinking..."
Cons: "Food and lack of entertainment options"
Pros: "crew members are nice, cheap price"
Cons: "super long lay over in shanghai. there is basically nothing to do inside the shanghai airport. it was so boring, the food is not so good"
Pros: "i enjoyed the amount of meals and beverages and soft blankets on long flights, offered a great range of games and movies."
Cons: "the aisles were very small even for me and i'm considered petite and i had to shuffle sideways down them. many people and not enough restrooms, decent sized lines of people waiting to use the restrooms seemed a safety hazard."
Pros: "Very clean"
Cons: "I wanted water but the staff couldn't help."
Pros: "Very efficient staff. Great operating system"
Pros: "Nothing."
Cons: "The crew was rude. My boyfriend and I felt discrimated against as we were not Asian. Multiple people must have been smoking in the bathroom because the plane smelt of cigarette smoke the entire flight to Shanghai. I am actually appalled."
Cons: "The airline misplaced my luggage going to my destination and returning back to my home. They refused to deliver it to me when they found it and said I had to pay if I want it delivered. The flights always arrived late. The service on board was poor. They refused to fill your glass to the top to save on produce. You couldn't you cell phones even in flight mode. Poor overheard entertainment. Mostly just advertisements. No napkins given with "meal". Meal consisted of bread with inknow meat inside and the dries piece of cake ever. Sadly china eastern knows you no choice when you need to go to smaller cities in China so they know they don't need to provide good customer service."
Cons: "Pilots continually smoking throughout flight. Woke me 5 times during my sleep. Very clearly it can't be stewards or passengers as smoke alarms are fitted throughout. Stewardesses politely pretended not to notice or smell the fumes every time it happened."
Cons: "Flight was due to take off in the morning- about 9am. There was not notice given that it was canceled until 2pm. I received a notice after the flight had presumably taken off. We were able to rebook on a Dragonair flight leaving at 11:00."
Pros: "Nothing"
Cons: "My flights were canceled because of a rule that should have been told to me."
Pros: "The crew did a good job."
Cons: "It didn't help that the flight was delayed almost 4 hours and we sat on the tarmac the whole time. The food wasn't very good, I was thirsty much of the time. The seats were very crowded and uncomfortable. Very limited selection of movies and you couldn't hear them anyway with the headphones provided."
Pros: "Food was VERY LIMITED;, one meal consisted of only half a sandwich. UNEXCEPTABLE! THE MONITOR which indicates current flight pattern never was working. Made me uneasy considering previous planes from Asia that were lost. Additionally, water was scarce. Little English spoken. Shanghi airport was a trip... having a 24 hour delay was not good. Never take that flight again for that reason alone."
Pros: "Flight was right on schedule. Crew was friendly and helpful. Snack was tasty."
Cons: "Could have used a bit more legroom."
Pros: "Costumer service"
Cons: "Time late"
Pros: "Efficiency!"
Cons: "Long line at the security checkpoint"
Cons: "The air plane was really old"
Pros: "On time departure, good pricing. Excellent value"
Pros: "Air China did an excelent job to get me to my destination."
Cons: "Kayak.com did not notify me my flight was cancelled. By my own dumb luck I showed up early enough for Air China to put me on a plane that was boarding. Come on kayak. You failed to provide details that could have ruined my trip. Get it together."
Pros: "Seats was ok not very comfortable . They don’t understand English . Before food served there is announcement for apologies for not choice. I ask her about food , what is this she said I don’t know. They don’t know what they are serving. It taste was horrible. That was the desert with food."
Cons: "They have to learn English and serve the better quality of food."
Pros: "Good crews!"
Cons: "I’m still at the airport. I haven’t gotten back to my final destination yet. The first flight got delayed and the second one left. Everything got messed up."
Pros: "Amazing crew... seats very comfy... departure and arrival on time."
Cons: "N/A"
Cons: "The flight was delayed 2 hours and no one was a telling us what was going on"
Cons: "Making the flight. Air China and the Beijing Airport made it very difficult for everyone on a variety of flights to get to their destinations."
Pros: "The plane smelled so bad, none of the crew speak English"
Cons: "Cleaning and Customer Service"
Cons: "entertainment"
Pros: "Great customer service, and very comfortable ride"
Pros: "bad middle seat - no advance seat selection available even 4 days in advance from kayak app and just fly website said link is broken. airchina website cannot find ticket. empty exit row seats not allocated upon request - airlines wanted $100 more for it. allocated randomly to others mid flight."
Cons: "advance seat allocation at the time of booking."
Pros: "The price was absolutely amazing, dollars to miles it was the best bargain on a trip ever. Crew responded very quickly, and handled everything excellently."
Cons: "The seat could have used a little more cushioning, the fasten seatbelt sign was on the whole flight so passengers weren't really sure when it was okay to move about the cabin."
Pros: "Yes they where excellent on everyway possible but the 1st hour of the flight was rough."
Pros: "Crew is always friendly on Cathay. Cathay operates this flight."
Cons: "They could have acknowledged my emerald status. They could have upgraded me to premium economy. That’s about all. It was a basic economy seat so not so great. Terrible space under that seat - blocked by video machinery."
Pros: "The service"
Pros: "In-flight entertainment was pretty good - I watched 2 movies and a couple nature documentaries. Food was decent."
Cons: "Seats are horribly uncomfortable especially for a tall person. The "C" shape plus the headrest jutting out so far make it impossible to get comfortable enough to fall asleep and there is very little leg room. I had finally drifted off when my friend poked me awake because they were serving dinner even though there were about 4 hours left in the flight. I was half asleep and had no appetite so I ended up giving them the whole tray back. There was also a shrill toddler several rows ahead of us who was yapping loudly for the entire second half of the flight. I obviously understand that children will be children and it was a long flight, but would have been nice if staff had asked the parents to try to quiet him down as they were not attempting to do so at all. Finally, our bags did not make it onto the next flight in time."
Cons: "There was bad toilet smell reaching where I sat."
Cons: "I have payed extra money for window seat. But that seat has no wondow."
Pros: "Crew was very, very attentive, food was really good, entertainment system was great. Will definitely fly Air China again, especially on their 777"
Pros: "Comfortable flight"
Cons: "Business class seats didn’t recline much. Only peanuts for food"
Pros: "Average service!"
Cons: "2x2 seating arrangement in the business class needs to catch up with other airlines such as ANA. International connection in Beijing is very confusing- there were 2 signs that say “foreigners” for both domestic and international connections."
Cons: "It turns out that we had to ask for a seat that is near a baby bassinet beforehand. Like it’s not obvious from the tickets that we’ve purchased that we are boarding with a baby. The truth is that Air Asia prefers to sell those seats instead of making sure that you would be comfortable with a baby boarding."
Pros: "Economy had lots of leg room surprisingly."
Cons: "Bad audio quality on entertainment system. Poor communication and food service. No way to call airlines beforehand for arranging special meal."
Pros: "The seats had more room so it was easy to get comfortable and sleep."
Cons: "Didn't like that there was no one there to answer any questions. The ladies there brushed off anyone who showed up by tossing a paper with a new departure time at them. The didn't even attempt to understand other questions. Plus the flight was delayed an hour."
Pros: "Service was nice and quick. Plane wasn’t too crowded."
Cons: "It was abnormally cold on the plane, which made relaxing difficult."
Cons: "Flight delayed 3+ hours, missed my connection"
Pros: "It was very cost effective. A great price for the trip."
Pros: "Clean cabin."
Cons: "Service not very good."
Pros: "Timeliness of the flight, good decent meals and most important, best and cheapest fare."
Cons: "No leg room, crappy toilets, rush between changing flights, as there was very little changing time"
Cons: "Well, the aircraft doesn’t have TV at the back of each seat."
Cons: "Long time of waiting"
Pros: "Food"
Pros: "The flight and service itself was good and the flight attendents were very kind and orderly for having to care for so many people"
Cons: "The touch screen didnt work on my chair and when i reached my final destination the airline said they have lost my luggage and are trying to find it. That was three days ago"
Cons: "AIR CHINA SHOOK ME DOWN FOR AN EXTRA $200 EVEN THOUGH I HAD PAID FOR MY TICKET IN FULL WEEKS EARLIER. HIGHLY UNETHICAL AIRLINE."
Pros: "The flight attendants were polite and attentive. Most spoke English or made some effort try. Flights were on time staff was super helpful. Meals were great!"
Cons: "Seats were a little cramped of your a taller person like me (6'2"). Very few English options for on flight entertainment."
Cons: "I've flown over seas several times before. Typically, in my experience, the oversea carriers provide an extra bit of leg room for the long distance travel. Air China apparently doesn't feel the need though. My legs were crammed up in the seats and I felt like I was on an 11 hour budget airliner flight. I checked in for my flight as early as possible, but was told there were not emergency exit rows available. Upon entering the plane, I saw the emergency exit row was filled with elderly people who's feet barely touched the floor. In the case of an emergency, it is supposed to be the responsibility of those in the exit row to assist passengers off the plane. I'm young, able bodied, 6'6" and willing to help, but I was denied an exit row seat? Instead my legs have to spill out into the aisle? It wasn't easy for the flight attendants either, because their service carts kept hitting my legs. I didn't mean to make their job harder, but my legs couldn't physically fit in the seat I was given."
Pros: "GOOD ATTITUDE"
Cons: "my stuff in the checked luggage was missing, obviously somebody took it from my luggage, also, my luggage bag was broken due to the rudeness of staff. very very disappointed."
Pros: "NOTHING"
Cons: "Small B737 air-craft Delays, delays, delays Cabin Temperature"
Pros: "enjoy movies"
Cons: "after a long flight overnight, breakfast and lunch are combined as brunch at 1:30pm melbourne time - but chicken rice /pork rice definitely are not so exciting !"
Pros: "The fact that this flight isn't operated by Air China."
Cons: "Nothing so far."
Cons: "1. Flight got delayed, so I missed my connection and I had to stay at the airport overnight. They did it provide a hotel to stay saying the delay was weather related and not their fault 2. Communication skills are extremely poor in Beijing airport 3. All flights were delayed from Air China."
Pros: "For economy class it was very good."
Cons: "It was economy class and the seat was uncomfortable."
Pros: "The flight was generally fine and on time. Good as good as to be expected on midrange flight."
Cons: "Transfering in Chengdu takes forever. First we didn't get a gate and had to take a bus to terminal the long way round the runway - 10 mins. Then we had to collect our suitcases and re-check in and the queue was very long. Some people were very stressed about missing their connecting flights. Then when transferring to connecting terminal you first have to walk far within the terminal, then have to go outside security, find yourself the shuttle bus to the other terminal yourself, then go through security again - many more queues. Lots of time spent and lots of stress, and I'm not alone as everyone was complaining."
Pros: "Very comfortable seat with a pillow and an excellent comforter. Slept 7 hours straight which is unusual for me. Clean restrooms. Food was ok."
Pros: "On time, good service."
Pros: "The Chinese propaganda war film "The Hundred Regiments Offensive" was quite amazing. I had never seen a World War II film from the Chinese perspective, and I honestly never knew that the Chinese single-handedly defeated the Japanese invaders. No help from anyone overseas, just the wisdom of Chairman Mao and his General Peng and Bye-Bye Japs."
Cons: "The Airplane did not have any individual air conditioning vents, which meant it was hot and muggy on board for all 14+ hours from Houston to Beijing. Also, no mobile device usage during the entire flight. And the flight attendants are very strict about that rule. They even have an announcement saying that the use of a mobile device during the flight can lead to imprisonment in China. Weird rules, but I didn't want to test the Chinese authority so I played by the rules."
