Pros:We rented an SUV for 11 days in Costa Rica. The online price for a 5 person/4 bag SUV was $196. We figured that we couldn't say no at that price and planned our trip based on having our own vehicle. When we arrived, they conveniently had misunderstood that we wanted a smaller SUV that could hold 4 people/1 bag and wanted us to pay an large upgrade fee to get the vehicle we had actually reserved. They also failed to mention that the insurance is $56/day and insurance is mandatory. There is also an additional unmentioned daily rate for each additional driver. All in all, the total would have been $900-$1000, about 5 times the price we had been quoted. They know they have you in a tough position and take advantage of that vulnerability. You either have to give into their scam or totally rehaul your vacation on the fly and miss things you were really looking forward to. Will never rent from ALAMO again.

Cons:Do not believe the rates. They try to take advantage of you with an insurance scam. I showed up with a rental that was supposed to be ~$100 and they told me it would be an ADDITIONAL $600 just for the insurance. I'm covered with insurance with my AMEX but they tried to convince me that the insurance through my card wouldn't cover me in Costa Rica. I called AMEX on the spot and confirmed that I was in fact covered - which of course I was (AMEX IS GREAT). They went on with stories about how the insurance laws are different in CR and I would be liable for everything regardless if I didn't purchase the insurance. Another call to AMEX confirmed that they were lying. They continued trying to confuse the situation with misinformation and trying to lower the price of the insurance. "Ok - how about $450? I can do $400, best price, then you know youre covered" etc etc etc... I ended up paying almost $400 instead of $100 with fees and extra charges. Also, we paid extra to get an "in terminal" rental. They had a desk at the terminal but you still had to take THE SAME shuttle as the off campus rental to get the car. ANOTHER SCAM. Probably the same deal with other rental companies in CR... seems to be part of the business model.

Pros:It was a good basic car.
Cons:We did not get the price as advertised as they said they only had a car for 4 passengers and we know we signed up for a 5 passenger vehicle. Then, they said they had a nice, new 5 passenger vehicle...the one we signed up for, but it would cost us more. Add to that all of the coverages and the vehicle was about 2.5 times more expensive than the price going in. Also, even with full coverage, we lost or had stolen our key and it cost a bloody fortune to deal with. So much for worry free full protection.

Cons:Everything seemed like a negotiation with them. They mentioned they did not accept insurance from external parties and their insurance costs were very high. Luckily the company I bought the insurance from prior to the trip was able to refund my money. Also - website says that Alamo is on the airport site but only a kiosk is on-site. You have to take a shuttle to the actual lot.

Pros:They allowed me to use my Credit Card CDW insurance and opt out of the personal liability insurance. They are simply the best Costa Rica has to offer!

Pros:The person at the counter was very kind, the only good thing
Cons:Despite I purchased the insurance option with Kayak, Alamo said that insurance I bought was not valid, that I must had to buy at least the basic coverage that includes colision only but I had to pay deductibles if I would have had an accident. The car was broken 3 hours later in San Josè downtown, streering pump problem and electrical problem that kept the car turning off and not starting the engine, you had to use the clutch and push the car to turn it on again. I did origin to a traffic jam, not to mention I almos had an accident due to the steering pump problem, driving that car was so hard. It took me 45 minutes aprox to have someone from the agency helping me. I returnes the car and asked for money back. Alamo did a change, so I must have to was two more days to make sure it was released and no changes were applied to my credict card. Thank uou
