Avoid this car rental location!
Cons: 1. Location is not at airport as it is advertised. It is aprox 20 minutes driving from the airport. They have one shuttle only (10 person capacity). 2. They will force you to pay extra for car insurance even if you buy your own insurance earlier. They told me my insurance doesn't cover 4x4 car so I have to call my insurance only to confirm that they will cover any car up to $40,000. Even after that they forced me to buy 'mandatory' insurance. And they will required $2,500 deposit on your credit card. We spent 90 minutes to pickup our car. There was 3 person behind the counter and only 2 customers in front of us. Worst experience ever and I rented car from many different locations around the globe.

Pros: The representatives at the SJO facility were pleasant.
Cons: We were rented a defective vehicle. We had to go to two locations to swap the vehicle out. The SJO office gave us a credit for the inconvenience. But now Alamo is trying to bill us for the repairs. Alamo Corporate is not taking ownership of the issue, and instead pushing us off to the franchise. I rent a ton of cars, and this is hands down the worst experience I've ever had.

Pros: Friendly staff. Knowledgeable.
Cons: Prices are a tad high and not clearly visible or labeled. Insurance is confusing, overpriced and could use more clarity.

A TOTAL RIP-OFF
Cons: Instead of one Hundred and thirty-four dollars, they wanted TEN times as much - ONE THOUSNAD and three hundred dollars. Refused to accept collision damage waiver with platinum credit card. Lied about it, I am a Costa Rican citizen, and other agencies accept the damage waiver. NEVER do business with ALAMO!

Pros: The Car
Cons: The needed extra insurance in costa rica what quickly made it a 560$ rental (2x)

Pros: Friendly workers, clean car, easy drop off
Cons: Charged 63 dollar deposit which salesman on site insisted I had not paid so charge the full amount again. Lots of add on charges (optional but strongly recommended) once you show up for the car.

Charged third party insurance for $180.00
Pros: The agent insisted that we but third party insurance for $180, said it was the law. If that is true, it should be added into the price of the car. I called my credit card company and they had never had that issue before -- so either the Alamo agent was scamming us, or the fee is legitimate and should be factored into the car price, as it was very misleading.

Pros: The car was nice. had no problems with it the four wheel drive saved my butt a few times. Returning the care was quick and easy, done in five minutes, and the shuttle took us to the airport no problems.
Cons: Unfortunately when we got to the car rental place they refused to let us use our third party insurance and forced us to take theirs, which made the price go from $150 to $557 total also they required a 1,000 usd deposit for the time that they withdrew from my credit card for the time that we had the car. (I guess this is standard but it would have been nice if they let us know ahead of time.)

The worst experience! Alamo in Costa Rica is a fra
Cons: Was a fraud. Before I made the booking I called directly to Alamo and they confirmed all the reservation and the terms of this. I went there with my reservation and mu insurance payed from Allianz, an they told me that If want to keep the rte I had to pay $2500 deposit plus an extra insurance. The worst experience.

Long wait for pick up after insurance rip off
Pros: Upgrade for delay
Cons: I couldn't complete the online insurance from the UK (because i was not in the US). I had to take out when i arrived at San Jose to be faced with an outrageous take it or leave price of $40 per day for comprehensive cover. Outrageous. I pay twice as much to insure three cars for a year as I did for a month in one car.

Pros: Represenatives were polite and understanding.
Cons: We selected an alamo rental from Kayak to accommodate for 5 people and 4 bags with additional Allianz auto insurance that was provided as an add-on on the Kayak website. When we arrived in Costa Rica, we learned that despite a visual proof via receipt from the Kayak website, an 'Intermediate SUV' by Alamo in Costa Rica is defined as an SUV that accommodates 4 people and 2 suitcases. In addition, the Allianz auto insurance that we selected would not cover the SUV rental as Allianz does not cover SUV's in Costa Rica.

Pros: Pick up was easy, car was comfort, and clean and affordable.
Cons: The Insurance they sale, is pricey and they don't want to accept the insurance offered online, saying it's no good in their country.

Cons: "Third party insurance" :/
Jan 27 2017
Pros: Service and car were ok.
Cons: The price you book online will only be 30% of your total bill. When you get there they will make you buy a mandatory insurance package that ranges from twice the daily price of the car to 4 times more.

HUGE hidden fees, SCAM
Pros: We rented an SUV for 11 days in Costa Rica. The online price for a 5 person/4 bag SUV was $196. We figured that we couldn't say no at that price and planned our trip based on having our own vehicle. When we arrived, they conveniently had misunderstood that we wanted a smaller SUV that could hold 4 people/1 bag and wanted us to pay an large upgrade fee to get the vehicle we had actually reserved. They also failed to mention that the insurance is $56/day and insurance is mandatory. There is also an additional unmentioned daily rate for each additional driver. All in all, the total would have been $900-$1000, about 5 times the price we had been quoted. They know they have you in a tough position and take advantage of that vulnerability. You either have to give into their scam or totally rehaul your vacation on the fly and miss things you were really looking forward to. Will never rent from ALAMO again.

DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICE
Pros: Nothing, they didn't even have a car for us
Cons: After traveling from Boston for 9 hours we arrived to San Jose, CR. We had a whole vacation planned out and these people told us they had no car. They offered us a shuttle to San Jose and promise to call us the next day with a car. It never happened. We end up renting a car with budget but this services was a nightmare. DO NOT, DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICE!!!

Pros: Hassle free return.
Cons: Did not receive a vehicle even close to what was reserved online.

Excellent car and service but hidden fees
Pros: The car was great and I got the wifi option, which made my trip much better. The staff was all very nice
Cons: There were so many hidden fees and insurance costs that my $300 booking ended up costing $1000. I had no idea there were be so many fees and I was extremely frustrated by the ridiculous cost.

They did not have my car available and were very r
Pros: Nothing. Awful experience. Had to book a rental through another agency after they did not have the car I had reserved.
Cons: Service was rude, and they did not seem bothered by the fact that they did not have my car. I reserved a 4x4 for my family vacation in Costa Rica. They did not have my car ready and said they wouldn't until the next day. They offered me a "mini" car, which was smaller than a toy car. Unacceptable for my family of four with our luggage, about to embark on dirt roads. We ended up booking through another agency. I will NEVER use national or Alamo again. Or kayak for that matter, since it apparently doesn't matter if you reserve a car through kayak 2 months in advance.

Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff at pick up location in SJO
Cons: While renting a Car insurance was offered and then at the pick up we were told that it was useless in Costa Rica and recommended to take the one offered by Alamo. Now I will have to cancel the original one I took worth around $65 and hope we will get our money back, which I doubt. Kayak should not offer during the rental process Insurances that are not valid in the country of destination

Terrible price for a gutless car
Cons: 1) We used Kayak to book our Alamo rental car for Costa Rica, and had purchased the additional insurance through Kayak. 2) When we got there, we were told that that insurance was invalid in Costa Rica, and instead of the $125 that we believed we were going to pay, our bill went up to $650! Unbelievable! It was so much money, that it was a big reason that we cut our stay short in Costa Rica and went home early - can't afford such big swings in our budget once we are already there! We even brought our original reservation, printed with the price and everything, and they wouldn't budge! 3) Did you know that the shuttle ride from the airport is NOT FREE?!?! What the heck! They of course don't tell you this. Instead, you notice it tacked on to your receipt. 4) If you plan on driving in Costa Rica, you will be going through mountainous regions. I have never driven a more gutless car, and believe you me, I have driven my share of old Camry vehicles, but this SUV we had was incredibly useless on the mountain roads. 5) The brakes were very iffy and I was nervous driving down steep grades because of them. 6) The lights and headlights were woefully inadequate and did not give me a good view of the road - which is important because people cross the road wherever they want to whenever they want to! 7) This experience has taught me something - to never ever rent from Alamo again.

Cons: Took two hours to pick up car
Dec 29 2016
Pros: The staff was very polite and helpful.
Cons: They push the additional insurance very hard , but with the typical driver maybe it's good for peace of mind.

Not always as advertised
Pros: It was a good basic car.
Cons: We did not get the price as advertised as they said they only had a car for 4 passengers and we know we signed up for a 5 passenger vehicle. Then, they said they had a nice, new 5 passenger vehicle...the one we signed up for, but it would cost us more. Add to that all of the coverages and the vehicle was about 2.5 times more expensive than the price going in. Also, even with full coverage, we lost or had stolen our key and it cost a bloody fortune to deal with. So much for worry free full protection.

Lots of hidden expenses
Pros: The vehicle was perfectly appropriate for the driving conditions we encountered. Basic SUV.
Cons: Hidden costs were absurd. The agency did not accept my Allianz insurance that I purchased through kayak and our estimate of $132 actual cost $578. I believe the companies should be required to disclose the full price when quoting. This was really disappointing and feels like false advertising. I am guessing all the rental agencies do it, but it is dishonest. Fortunately we had the funds to cover it.

Beware - Alamo will blame you for pre-existing dam
Pros: Car was fine - in decent shape, and got the job done. Nothing luxurious about it. I rented a 4x4 compact SUV. Generally speaking, the car was good enough and I have no material complaints about the vehicle.
Cons: Biggest complaint was that during check-out (when I first picked up the car), the Alamo staff were pretty sloppy with noting damages. They failed to note that the keyhole on one of the doors was jammed. Consequently, when checking it back in, they immediately flagged it and demanded $90 extra to fix it. I'd taken a video of the entire outside of the car ahead of time to protect myself against this kind of fraud, but unfortunately the video resolution was too low to prove the damage existed before I picked it up (and it's hard to show a blocked keyhole anyway). The punchline is that I was charged $90 for damage that I did not cause. I will not be renting from Alamo again. I highly recommend National and Avis - I've had consistently good service from both in the past.
Dec 19 2016
Cons: I purchased the insurance offered via Kayak in order to not hassle with it when we got to San Jose to pick up our SUV rental. At the agency, they pointed out that the insurance is not valid for SUVs, which upon inspection of the document was accurate. I had to purchase insurance on site, which is what I wanted to avoid and still have not got my money back from the provider, Allianz. Very disappointed this was the case for a site, Kayak, I regularly use and trust, and also through Alamo, who I selected inspite of other affordable options. The car was also not as described but did the trick.
Dec 18 2016
Pros: The car inspection was fairly quick.
Cons: The location was impossible to find. We were never given the address and had to follow an Alamo shuttle to find it. Since we left the tank half empty, we expected to pay Alamo to fill up but the associate couldn't even tell us how much it would cost. He said not to worry as they'll jusy charge whatever it will be to my card later. I had to argue to get the guy to give me a final bill price before I left as I don't want to be charged some ridiculous amount a day later.
Oct 24 2016
Cons: I took me over 45 minutes to get the car I requested, The car had the worst set of tires, it was insecure and a threat to drive. The car they rented consumed gas like crazy, they should have fuel efficient cars.
Oct 17 2016
Pros: The car was great and got us all over the country
Cons: What I didn't like was the price. The price on kayak was no where near the price that I was quoted and had to pay that was my only issue

Cheap cars with low performance
Pros: Easy and quick drop off , clean car and smooth process
Cons: Waited for almost an hour for the employee to show up at pickup. Car was very cheap and lacks power

Don't rent through Alamo!
Pros: The car was clean, and worked well throughout our trip.
Cons: The company employees were not straightforward, charged us many hidden fees, were rude when we presented the insurance we had purchased for the vehicle, and gave us poor instructions when renting and returning the vehicle.
Sep 7 2016
Pros: There was a car there for us & everyone was friendly enough.
Cons: Car was older & full of scratches. Kayak said it was at the airport, but you have to take a 15 minute shuttle to get to their office. While I already purchased insurance through Kayak Alamo said they didn't accept it & It was mandatory that I purchase theirs at a rate of an additional $26/day for basic coverage. Next time I'll book with someone else & educate myself a little more before making a reservation.
Sep 5 2016
Cons: I purchased Costa Rica insurance for the rental before I left the states. Alamo made me buy their insurance at 48.00 per day. The rental was not what I was quoted and a 80.00 charge ended up costing 295.00. I feel like I was ripped off...

How they scam ur money
Pros: I like they were there for a fight .... Have u ever felt like a little minnow in the water with a bunch of hungry sharks
Cons: Kayack sold us a insurance they did not accept it not only that I paid 150 moré than what they told me in the beginning and they were pushing and pushing to sell their insurance .....so I declined and used my credit card for that ...the only good thing is the car was new and it got us there and back
