Black Lantern - Topsham - Bedroom
1
9.6 Excellent (112 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Located in Topsham, Black Lantern is on a river, within a 5-minute walk of Androscoggin River and Maine Fiberarts. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Our "Queen Room with River View" was large, bright and cheerful. One of the two large windows looked out to the garden and the river. Our room was comfortable in all respects: bed, lights, air-conditioning, shower, peacefulness, screening. The house too is attractive and welcoming, and is surrounded by flowers, shrubs and trees. The location is very convenient and parking is not a problem. The hosts were friendly and helpful. Tom came up with specific, printed recommendations as to parks where we could walk by the sea. Lucy prepared remarkable breakfasts that were very tasty, refined and attractive.
Cons: We were delighted with our stay at the Black Lantern. We would like to note, however, that the location might not be suitable for guests without a car -- it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the center of Brunswick (without luggage). Also the combination of small hands and the Black Lantern's fine furnishings might not be ideal. As is often the case, guests need to be prepared to climb one flight of stairs.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tom and his wife are very friendly and cook a great breakfast
Cons: Not a thing.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful home. Big room. Comfortable bed, convenient parking.
Cons: No tv in room. Bathroom was really small.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The place was quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. Our host was very friendly and engaging, and gave us wonderful advice on local restaurants. Although we had limited opportunity to enjoy the beautiful gardens, they are very impressive., with an excellent view of the river.
Cons: We never got to meet the hostess, as she was away at the time. And because of rain, we were unable to enjoy the beautiful gardens.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was beautiful and the breakfasts out of this world. The innkeepers were very special people , warm and sincere! I would recommend this B&B without hesitation.
Cons: We had to leave too soon.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hosts who couldn't have been more helpful, even down to walking down to the river with us and talking about the resident wildlife. Room was extremely comfortable with lots of light from the two windows and lovely river view. Home cooked breakfast was beautiful. Would highly recommend. A short drive from Topsham. Would recommend the Seadog Brewing Company for dinner.
Cons: Nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The accommodation on the whole was very lovely, but slow service for the breakfast. See below.
Cons: The breakfast was good, but served very slowly. I would recommend having some of the items be served buffet style. Only serve the cooked items. The coffee pot and hot water pot were empty several times.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely owner lovely place!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Love this friendly inn. I have stayed here twice and always look forward to my glass of wine on the porch.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My wife and I stayed for 18 days and enjoyed our time very much. I never slept better! The place was quiet, although nicely close to the shops and restaurants of the town. The staff was warm and friendly. Highest recommendation.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very quiet, comfortable and relaxing! Staff is helpful and friendly. A great way to get away!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean, friendly and cosy. Nice and clean historical area.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We really enjoyed the rocking chairs on the front porch. There is a nice green-space directly across from the Inn. It was being used by some Shakespearean players when we visited. Saw pictures of how the green-space is flooded in the winter for ice skating. Very quaint. Everything is within walking distance yet the green-space sets the Inn back from the main(e) street so it is quiet. We walked to eat dinner, have Gelato, see a musical (put on by MSMT) on the Bowdoin College campus. Just a short drive to Popham beach and small Doubling Point lighthouse. The location is great. Breakfast each morning started with making choices from at least 4 to 5 options and also eggs to order. Food was delicious and in "just right" portions. All staff are friendly and helpful. We had the best long weekend!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The bed was extremely comfortable. Very quiet, got a wonderful nights sleep
8.8 Excellent
Pros: We were one month on vacation travelling around the USA and the breakfast we had at the Brunswick Inn was by far the best!! The hostess was very pleasant.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: High quality breakfasts-local bacon and homemade baked goods. Warm and welcoming staff.
Cons: We wished there was brewed coffee available in the morning in the carriage house as well as the main inn.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff, and the fact that with the envelope and the tip jar we could show out thanks
Cons: The fact that Choice Hotels marks down hotels for the opportunity to leave tips. It should be the other way around. Hotels that help their employees this way should be rewarded!
5.5 Okay
Cons: rudeness of the breakfast room person. At 9.55 am she already had almost everything removed. We had to ask her politely if she could give us some milk and some cereal. There was nothing else to eat. Even the waffle maker had already been cleaned. At 10.15 am she started cleaning the breakfast room with a vacuum cleaner. Really rude. we found very little education and rudeness even in the cleaning staff. They never responded to our greetings. WIFI SIGNAL VERY POOR
8.0 Excellent
Pros: ok not great
Cons: more selection at breakfast
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Your breakfast person was lovely. The food was good. I love the cheese omelets that you have.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Nice beds , good complimentary breakfast and coffee. Great staff
Cons: only 2 drawers and small "closet" space for clothing
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was very good because of a very friendly attendant.
Cons: This is a little older property but all was pretty good. After we got our keys, the young lady suggested we might want to use a door at the back, but we already had our bags out of our car with us. The walk to our rooms was easily a quarter mile, the place goes back through several halls and corners. We had no idea it could be that far away, especially as the front of the hotel looks small. My elderly mother and her friend were worn out. It would be nice if they had a floor plan to show you where your room is so you can make an informed choice to drive around.
6.8 Good
Pros: The room was a bit small. The bathroom was even smaller. The tub didn’t drain properly the bathroom door was sticking and would not close all the way and there was a lot of pieces of hair in the linen and bedsheets. Definitely not what we expected from the appearance of the lobby and the front of the building.
Cons: The location is very convenient close to shopping downtown Brunswick and Bodoin College
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: It was close to Brunswick Maine
Cons: Worn out hotel with cheap formica room furniture showing wear and tear. Breakfast very sparse - unappetizing bland cheese omelettes and sausages, little kid size boxes of cereal about the only thing edible.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: breakfast was good. Food was fresh and staff was present.
Cons: the room did not have enough towels. 2 guests need 4 towels.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very comfortable overnight stay!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Brunswick Comfort Inn WAY exceeded my expectations. First, the staff. They were welcoming and efficient. At the front desk, Rachel patiently helped me when I had trouble logging in on my laptop. In the breakfast room, Susan was warm, friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and sparkling clean. There is attention to detail that I not found in other hotels -- many more expensive. For example, in the women's room off the lobby there was a basket of tampons available and there are 8 rocking chairs on the front porch where I could read while my traveling partners were napping. All in all a great choice if you are staying in Brunswick.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Best hotel we have stayed in on this vacation!

5.5 Okay
Cons: Small double (?) beds - no options for queen or king. High price for the room, considering.
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff especially Mark the maintenance person was very helpful to us.
Cons: On the whole the hotel was good. I was not happy being locked out in 10 degree temperatures on Thanksgiving night. And then locked out of the room. My husband has severe COPD so this problem with the key cards not working was very stressful for him, then when we did get into our room it had not been made up. A disappointment after a long day. We would stay again but I would ask about a handicapped room.

Pros: Hotel was very clean. Friendly staff
7.5 Good
Pros: Close to shops and convenient to other towns.
Cons: No pool, currently under construction.
6.3 Good
Pros: Location is great. It’s a nice place.
Cons: Specifics room location this time was on main rd(would not have that again) Our door was literally a foot from another rooms door and the people were in and out constantly starting at 6am and the slow door thing was broken so it would slam and our headboard was up against that wall(it sucked) Asked for air mattress which was not in room like they said and when we got it it deflated both nights so yeah they should probably check things. Stains on walls in bathroom (gross) if I noticed it right away their cleaning staff should see it. Shower curtIn road is about to fall out of wall. 1 washcloth and 1 hand towel but 4 bath towels. Refrigerator was unplugged and had leaked all over the floor when we arrived (not sure why) Only found 1 useable outlet all others did not work. I think they are maybe renovating because staff was putting in new TVs and phones., but cleaning staff would block the hallways and be complaining and ignore everything around them. Front desk staff are awesome!

Pros: Food was great. It was busy and a bit understaffed, at times, so there was some waiting. Great, convenient choice overall. It’s popular.
Cons: No pool or hot tub, but not far from the beach.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful and directly across from Bowdoin College.
Cons: Took an hour for breakfast and we were the first ones there and the only order, on a Saturday early. We were late getting to our event. All we ordered was oats and pancakes. They need to express to staff, some people have places to go and don’t want an hour wait to receive food. We still had to eat once it did arrive. n hour and a half for breakfast when only table in there is absurd. Rest of the place is great.

The bathroom was recently gutted and rebuilt. The parking lot is in great shape. Stairs are new. Room was very clean. A great value for the money.
Cons: This is located at the beginning of the business district. Being a little closer to the center would be nice. But, then again, it’s more expensive.

Pros: Staff very friendly. Nice breakfast spread
Cons: Over priced for the type of acomodations (was a holiday week). Really needs a face lift. AC was not on so the room was sweltering and took hours to cool down. Felt the need to check for bed bugs because of how dingy the room was. Didn't find any.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: Location?
Cons: The room was filthy with a lot of damage to the walls and carpets. As we were packing up in the morning, we discovered a lot of black mold around the window. My wife and children spent much of the night and following day sniffling and hacking, which I believe was due to the mold.
