KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Memphis
Like so many cities in the U.S., Memphis requires visitors to have a vehicle at their disposal. Without a rental car at hand, you would simply struggle to get around the city as there is very little in the way of public transportation in the city. The main option is taking the public bus that, compared to a rental car, is quite slow and, especially when traveling with a group of people, would be even more expensive than renting in some cases.
Planning on picking up a rental car after your flight to Memphis lands? For travelers with flights to Memphis International Airport you will find the rental car counters in the Ground Transportation Center in Terminal B, one level below Baggage Claim.
Visitors to Memphis should note that GPS devices will often say that drivers can drive on Memphis’ famed Beale Street, but in actuality the street is blocked off for pedestrian use most hours of the day. Beale Street is one of the most popular attractions in Memphis and, while originally cars could drive on it at all hours, nowadays it is mostly reserved for pedestrian traffic except in the early hours.
No two words are dreaded more by drivers than rush hour. Fortunately for visiting drivers to Memphis, the city actually has fairly mild rush hour traffic. The morning rush hour normally lasts from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and in the afternoon it starts up around 4:00 p.m. and finishes shortly after 6:00 p.m.

It is also unlawful to drive at speeds of over 15 mph on any street that has been zoned as a school area. All Memphis schools have official signs that show the areas are designated as school zones. Thus, it would help if you kept an eye out for these signs while driving. If you are caught driving above the set limits in the city streets, you’ll pay a fine of about $70, while if you’re caught doing so in a school zone, you’ll be fined at least $100.
With a car from one of the cheap car rentals in Memphis, you’ll be able to have road trips to destinations outside the city. Heber Springs is one such destination. Situated 132 miles (212km) from Memphis, this town boasts picturesque landscapes and many historical points of interest. I had one of the worst rental car experiences I’ve ever had with Hertz in Memphis. I arrived to pick up the vehicle I had reserved and was told they didn’t actually have my car available. No alternative was proactively offered and there was essentially no attempt to help solve the problem at the location. Instead, the staff told me to call the Hertz 1-800 customer service number myself. After spending time on the phone, the representative there told me the local store should have been helping me directly. So I ended up stuck between the local office and corporate, with neither taking ownership. To make matters worse, the phone agent eventually offered me another vehicle—but only at a price that was about $350 more than the reservation I already had. So the solution to Hertz not honoring the reservation was apparently to pay substantially more. The entire experience felt disorganized, frustrating, and like customer service completely disappeared once there was a problem. If a reservation doesn’t actually reserve a car and the customer has to chase down solutions themselves, what’s the point? I would not use Hertz again and would not recommend booking through them based on this experience.

Worst experience. They rented out my prepaid reservation and had no other car available to me and told me no rental car available in any Hertz in the city. Part of this experience is due to my fault. I didn’t realize there is very short time window in Hertz for me to pick up the rental car. But there is no such warning during my booking or via email/text after the booking. They did mention if no show there is no refund of my prepaid amount. So my understanding is the car will be held for a reasonable time window until I show up. But they just rented out my reservation without any notification to me. And when I took a Uber to get to the Hertz place and then found out I had to take a Uber out.
Didn’t have car reserved. Sent to another location which also did not have.

The first car we were offered had very low tread on front tires and patches that we down to the wire. Disappointing that this was not picked up by Avis prior but once I pointed it out the staff were apologetic and immediately provided a different vehicle.
They were out of cars I didn't get my rental. Waited 40 minutes in line to be told there were no cars left.

Filthy car, no L1 charger included. No one available upon return. Daily charge added for EV accessories which were not included. Told to charge KIA at Tesla supercharger using a NACS to J1772. I tried explaining it wouldn't work- they assured me it would. I didn't argue. Memphis airport Budget location is dramatically understaffed. An issue that didn't seem to be a problem at the several other counters and pickup locations. Not my first negative experience with Budget, but it's my last.

The first rental they were sold out of cars and were supposed call me in the morning when one came in. They did not call. The second rental no one was at the desk or in the lot at DFW. So I ended up renting from another agency.
I showed up and the class of vehicle I had rented was not available. The person at the front desk could not have cared less. She says I can give you another smaller vehicle or you can wait for hours.

Good price, good car, most service aspects OK. But the windscreen was not clean and the tank was less than half full. And it took ages when we came back to get a second driver added to the contract.
The team in Memphis lost my reservation, even after confirming my pick-up time a few days prior. In the end I just rented a similar vehicle but the cost was over $100 higher. When I dropped the vehicle off a week later, your employee Gray asked how my rental was and I told him about the issue. He immediately found my original reservation and billed me the original amount. Excellent customer service from Gray and a good save on customer service.

The person said cars are not avaipable even if they had cars and l have already prebooked it. Later the person said he will figure out something and gave one of the car as I was with the family there which are quite older. The questions asked during the car pickup were also quite irrelevant as compared to my previous experiences. Nobody asked me earlier who is your employer and give me your insurance details for some reason. Also, how the car appeared available suddenly after seeing I will be there standing figuring out what to do next. The car didn't had any viper fluid also. I am thankful that I finally got the car but the dealing and not giving the car in the first time either thinking to make it available for higher prices for future booking or some other reason.

UI liked nothing. I had previously made a confirmed reservation for 5:30PM. I approached the rental counter at approximately 5:35PM. The agent took my driver's license and a hard copy of my confirmed reservation. After a few minutes she informed me there were no cars available, and it could be 1 to 2 hours before a vehicle could be available. I pointed out a vehicle less than 509 feet from the counter and was told it was unavailable. Approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes later the agent called me to the counter, explained a vehicle was available but I would be required to pay an upcharge. She pointed to the very same vehicle which was still in the same spot I had inquired about when I first got to the counter. I had to drive over two hours south of Memphis for a meeting the next morning. I had to have a car. She explained the upcharge would be $10. I agreed. I received a charge to my credit card for just over $239. $200 of which she explained was a deposit. I am requesting a full refund for the upcharge and confirmation the $200 deposit has been returned to my account. I have never been treated like this by any rental car company. I will never rent from your firm again. I am sending out a blast email to all my contacts and work associates detailing my experience and recommending they never use your firm.

Found good pricing online. The hiccup was that there was a 4 hour delay to pick up the vehicle when we arrived at the airport, as cars had not been turned in on time, so we had to use Uber to leave the airport, then return to pick up the vehicle. I was notified when the vehicle was ready and from there, things went smoothly. Car was clean on pick up overall; had some prior dings that we noted before leaving the rental pick up site, but nothing major. The vehicle return went well.
