KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Akron
Akron has a good mix of parks, nature preserves, tourist sites, and bustling bar and restaurant areas, and many of these spots are accessible only by personal vehicle. If you’re visiting the city, we recommend booking a car rental in Akron to make the most of your trip. Rather than rely on city buses, which wind up almost doubling (or more) some commutes, a rental allows you the autonomy and flexibility to enjoy whichever aspects of the city are most appealing to you. What’s more, rentals tend to be a cost-effective mode of transportation as compared with taxis and rideshares, whose fares are often subject to surge pricing.
You’ll likely want to pick up your Akron car rental when you fly into Akron-Canton Regional Airport (CAK). Here, there are service desks for a range of rental car companies, including Alamo, Budget, Avis and National. To find the vehicle you’ve booked through KAYAK, simply head to the baggage claim area and, once there, take a right. At the far end, you’ll find representatives from the car rental companies that will get you settled into your vehicle.
Like many major cities, Akron’s streets are replete with vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, all competing for road space. While driving here, we recommend that you stay vigilant of non-motor road users. Although there are several spots for road crossings, you may find people crossing the street at undesignated locations, particularly in areas where there are bars and restaurants. Additionally, while there is ample space for cyclists, they may come into the main flow of traffic. Also take note that bicyclists will often indicate turns through hand gestures.
If you have the flexibility to determine the time at which you arrive at your destination, we recommend choosing a time outside of the city’s rush hours. Morning rush hour in Akron is typically between 7:30am and 8:30am. In the later afternoons, you can expect rush hours from about 3:30pm to roughly 5:30pm.

The car was NOT clean. The attendant told me it had just been dropped off and did I want the dirty seat wiped down...yes, please 🙄 A few minutes after leaving the pickup, the deodorizer wore off and the car smelled like an old shoe. I drove with the windows down when I could it smelled so bad.

Cons:
It was a pretty basic transaction. Hard to do much else.
Arrived at the Akron Budget rental location and was told that the vehicle I rented was not available. Being out of town, I had Ubered there under the promise of a vehicle there (I had reserved online). When they told me they didn’t have it they offered no apology or remedy but rather said that I would have to go to the airport to get a vehicle. They had a “not my problem” mentality even though the car was reserved ahead of time. I asked if they could transport me to another location as it was the company’s fault for allowing the reservation and they said no and gave me a list of local taxi companies. Again, being stuck since I was in town on business I had to Uber again to the airport where I eventually was able to get a vehicle. Overall, it cost me two hours in time and was a terrible experience.

Pros:
Everything went smoothly with drop-off and pick-up. No surprise fees.
Cons:
Wish the cost of a secondary driver wasn't so high, especially considering their having full coverage insurance. Think it was fifteen bucks or so a day, maxing out at six days.
