I reserved two rental cars under my name back in April at pretty good rates.....when I got there for the pickup in Florence they told me that I couldn't do that....so had to put under my wife's name at the "day of" rate which was almost $1000 more. I shouldn't have to pay for the inadequacies of their systems. They should have given me the promised rate.Reviewed Jun 13 2026

First of all, we were quoted around 500 Euro for the largest car they had for 5 people with 7 suitcases and 5 personal sized bags, which looked plenty adequate. (We realize cars aren’t that big in Florence IT, but we had a picture of what we booked). Instead, (of course) there were no such cars on the lot and we were given a medium SUV which was not big enough for all 5 of us AND our luggage! We crammed everyone and every bag in (on laps etc). All done and said, it was 1100 Euro with taxes, insurance for dings, accidents, window chips etc. When we got to the car, not only was it small, it was heavily damaged with huge dents and scrapes. We certainly didn’t need the supreme insurance for that piece of junk. In hindsight (if we weren’t in a hurry), we should’ve demanded a different car or taken the supreme insurance off and gotten bare minimum for an accident only. My suggestion- don’t ever rent a car in Italy! Trying to drive in their cities is stressful and dangerous! Most of the Tuscan cities don’t allow non residents to park in parking spots so it’s best to park outside the city and walk in. We would take a taxi or Uber next time. We actually drove into Florence, and it was so crazy busy and we couldn’t find parking and drove right back out and went to Siena instead.Reviewed Oct 7 2025

I booked an Avis car from Florence to San Remo to drive on 30 May through Kayak and when I went to pick up the car, Avis told me that San Remo Avis would be closed and there was no key drop so I could not take the car. They recommended taking the train but I would have to wait 4 hours until the next train. I changed my destination to the next closest city but it was still an hour away from San Remo and then I had to book a train. Probably the worst experience of this international trip. I will likely not book through Kayak again since you don’t know when the offices are open and closed and if they have key drops.Reviewed May 31 2025

our flight was cancelled. We could not contact them. Avis took the opportunity the next day to charge ridiculous rates for the smallest vehicles. We went to another provider and were provided with the requested size at near the earlier quoted rate. I will not use a third party provider again. If not direct avis does not care.Reviewed Sep 20 2024
