Pros: Kayak offered a good dealCons: There was no transparency on price nor on the rules, at the time of pickup the insurance exceeded the daily rental, something that was never disclosed and I was told that when returning, the fuel would be charged at the same price I could find on the street,

They didn’t have the car for me and all that I got was “we don’t have a car and if you want to say something write an email” - the worst service ever!!!!Cons: Everything! They didn’t have the car, the service was terrible! Please do not rent a car here! The worst experience in my life!

Rental ended up costing 2 times more than quoted rPros: The rental car facility is in the airport.Cons: Where do I start? First off, the insurance I purchased via Kayak (Allianz) was absolutely useless. When I explained that I purchased this insurance for an extra $70+ to the gentleman at Avis, he told me that didn't matter. If I did not purchase additional insurance from Avis, my credit card would have a $5,000 hold placed against it in the case of any damage to the car (I only rented a Chevy Spark). Being that this would max out my credit card, I was forced to purchase additional insurance from Avis for another $120, which only placed a $1,200 hold against my card for any damages. The total of the insurance I paid of approx. $200 was equal to the weekly rate I was quoted for the car. I'm glad I had $50k worth of insurance to cover a $10k subcompact. I also believe there is a billing issue, but I cannot follow the lists of additional expenses I was billed for additional mileage (my fault) vs. the credits I was suppose to receive for a shortened rental period. The statements I received from Avis do not seem to match up to what my credit card was charged.

Pros: The SUV was clean and comfortable.Cons: We had reserved a car for $197.43 and few months prior to the trip and had received an email confirmation two days prior to our trip, however when we landed in Quito we were told at the counter that the price of our car was in fact over $1,300. It was too late to change our plans and book a flight instead of drive, thus we we forced to rent the car for only a few days for around $600 and then figure out public transportation for the rest of our trip.

Avis refused to honor the reservation.Cons: Avis refused to honor the reservation. This reservation was made in November they had months to contact me if they were dissatisfied. They wanted 1000 times the reserved price. Shocking and offered no compromise. We rented from another agency.

Pros: absolutely nothing, Budget in Guayaquil airport did not honor the terms of my reservation wanting to charge extras for mileage and insurance doubling the rate of my reservation. I had to go to another rental agency for a vehicle.Cons: Just honor the contract you agreed to and don't leave your patrons forced to pay double or without a vehicle. Very disappointed with Budget in Guayaquil.

Extremely DissapointedPros: Gentleman that explained the features of the vehicle and the security alarm system was courteous and helpful.Cons: I'll stick to the facts: 1. It took them over 1.5 hours to provide me with a vehicle. 2. I booked an automatic and they didn't have any automatics in hand. (Said people were not returning cars on time - I think it was BS) 3. They discounted me $10 per day for "my troubles" _ WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD I DO IF I DIDN'T ALSO KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION! 4. My reservation said Chevy Tahoe or similar (I chose the biggest car). I'm sorry to report that a Susuki Gran Vitara provided by Budget is NOT on the same level as a Chevrolet Tahoe. (They said it was the biggest vehicle they had). 5. They couldn't use my Citi Credit Card because it had a chip and the letters/numbers did not jet-out from the card like the old cards. They say the country had not upgraded their credit system, so I guess it wasn't their fault? Except I had no trouble using my c.c. all over the rest of Ecuador... I eneded up using my Chase c.c. which also had a chip, but the letters/numbers did jet out still. 6. Even after I purchased their insurance, which I didn't want to because my Citi c.c. covers it, they still had to take a $1,500 hold on my card... Not a problem for me, but imagine if my secondary card didn't have a high enough limit. 7. I wanted to return to the vehicle earlier and they said it was a 24 hours charge for the day regardless. I said ok, but I get to the airport and the office is close at 7am! I think they come in at 8am? Avis was open. I don't know if my experience would have been any better at any of the other companies, but my point is I won't be renting from budget any time in the future and would advise other fellow travelers to try Avis or Thifty both opened at 6:00am when I got to the airport.

Guayaquil airport kiosk closed when we returned thPros: The car was clean and ran efficiently for the 2 weeks we had the car. The desk staff was helpful at the airport when they finally arrived. Due to an accident not our fault, the staff was helpful in managing the complaint.Cons: The desk was closed when we arrived at the airport to return the car. It was difficult at first to reach them.

Pros: Very convenient location.Cons: Under powered vehicle for driving the Sierras mountainous roads. Inside windshield possibly never cleaned; wipers streaked.
5.6 OkayMay 31 2019
Pros: The location at the airport was easy to find and the cars were literally across the street, i.e., no bus to take to the rental car facility.Cons: If you are planning to drive the Sierras of Ecuador, please be sure to get the most powerful engine available so that you can pass those slow trucks and semis on the winding roads through the mountains. My car was supposed to be an "upgrade" but had too little power to safely pass anyone.

7.2 GoodDec 15 2019
Pros: Pick up and drop off were easy, the staff was friendly, and the vehicle was fine and as expected.Cons: The cost of the vehicle ended up roughly doubling what was expected due to: 1.) insurance coverage - granted I get that.. 2.) The limit on the number of kilometers you could drive for free.. this wasn't clear at all on the reservation - likely buried in the fine print somewhere. I had to purchase unlimited kilometers as an extra thing, which I think is kind of ridiculous..

Pros: The only good thing about this experience was that they offered to switch the vehicle they gave me with the van I reserved; and they delivered it to where we were staying, but it was halfway through our trip and we had already done almost all of our driving in a VERY uncomfortable SUV .Cons: > I was not given the van I was told on my receipt that I ordered. The small SUV they gave me BARELY fit all of us and our luggage - which we had to have under our feet and on our laps - very dangerous and EXTREMELY uncomfortable. > They offered to switch the vehicle with the van I ordered - which they had rented to someone else - halfway through our trip. We accepted, but we had already done 90% of our driving in the small SUV. Not really helpful. > I had to spend an additional $25/day (amounting to another $300) for insurance, although I had already purchased a plan through Alliance, which was suggested when I booked the vehicle online. There was nothing that stated this was not going to be valid in Ecuador, but that's what I was told and as a result I HAD to purchase the other insurance. HORRIBLE, EXPENSIVE EXPERIENCE

Car insurance way too high and mandatory even if you have onePros: Car was clean and pick up / dropoff was fast.Cons: I reserved the car via Internet indicating that I did not need insurance (I have one included with my credit card for car rental). Once on site, they obligated me to take the insurance which almost doubled the cost. Very frustrating and once you are there, you almost have no choice, especially when you arrive late at night.

I called customer service but they were no help at all and costed me even more due to the I ternational calls. Please don't sell insurances that later are not accepted by the car rental office. Thrifty should really look into its Ecuador location!! Terrible!!Cons: 1st my reservation was made about 5 months before my trip and per the reservation I would get a Tahoe or something similar. When I arrive the Thrifty clerk says they don’t work with Tahoe’s and that my reservation would be for a Suzuki Vitara and if I wanted an upgrade it would cost me twice as much as what my reservation was made. 2nd even though my credit card offered insurance for international rentals (I called my credit card to confirm this before I left the country and they said the country I was going to was covered for rentals) Thrifty made me buy their insurance or I could not rent the vehicle! I was traveling with my wife and 2 kids (toddler and infant) so I had no choice at that point but to pay the extra or I would have to waist more time at the airport after a almost 12 hour flight and it was getting late. 3rd because none of my credit cards have the numbers in the front (no cards in the US have them anymore!! At least the new ones don’t!) I had to pay an extra $1000 deposit which they said they would return once I returned the vehicle. When I returned the vehicle they then said it would be 2 weeks before they returned my deposit to make sure I didn’t get any tickets on the vehicle. We are now over 2 weeks and they still have not returned my $1000 deposit! Also the car was all scratched and dinged up all around!! They AC vent on the driver side was broken!! Bottom line! Thrifty in Ecuador is terrible!! They should really do something about this location! Makes their company look bad! Will never rent from them again!

They changed the policies rules upon arrival even though we had a confirmed & active reservation, they said they cancelled it, they received no contact information & to rent a car it was way more money. Top tips for renting a car in Guayaquil

  • Car rentals in Guayaquil provide safer and easier access to attractions throughout the city. You will also have greater access to nearby suburbs and residential areas in case you are staying outside the downtown area. If you only speak English, the bus or taxi system might be confusing. With a rental car, you will be able to explore at your own pace and reach the suburbs.
  • José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) offers Guayaquil car rentals at counters in the Arrival Hall, the main entrance into the airport terminal. The airport is just outside the downtown area on Avenida de las Américas, so you will have easy access to the city once you pick up your vehicle from the lots, which are within walking distance of the rental area.
  • Roads in Guayaquil can be crowded, but you will be able to navigate them safely and successfully if you stay alert and pay attention to the traffic around you. Use your turn signals early when you need to change lanes and know the route you are going to take before you leave your hotel or residence. If you only speak English, consider learning a few common directional questions in Spanish in case you get lost while you are traveling and need directions from locals.
  • Rush hour in Guayaquil can occur from around 6am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm, with busy roads common throughout the day. Check the traffic before you leave and give yourself extra time if you plan to travel during rush hour. There is a heavy amount of rainfall between January and April, which may slow traffic and cause accidents. If you get caught driving in heavy rainfall, use caution and turn on your headlights.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Guayaquil for $22 or less
  • Book your rental car in Guayaquil at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
