Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

The check-in process took forever. It was a large line and at the beginning the attendance. Chatting among each other, Delaying the process. Finally, a young man came in. And checked in as many people as the previous to attendance did together. I’ve been to this car rental before, and it brought a memory of the last time we experience the same thing. Very frustrating.

I prepaid for my car only to get to the counter and wait for just under an hour. Once assigned a car, I again waited because I was then told my car was double booked. I finally got a car, and it was a great car. However, after turning it in on time I was charged for 3 additional days because they had me down as driving a completely different car. Definitely will Pay More next time and rent from someone else.

Getting from baggage claim to Payless terminal had to stand in long lines to get on the bus. The customer service agent was very nice and friendly. We ended up getting an electric car, but never told us about what charging stations we could use being not familiar with that type of electric car and where the charging stations were a big problem wasted a lot of time during our driving experience, trying to find chargers that would work.

Payless always comes through, the pickup and dropoff process is fast and easy never any issue.. The payless cars are very updated and reliable, the price is always affordable and the deposit is always given back as soon as you drop it off, no extra charges or fees.. I highly recommend them, been using them for the past 3 yrs everytime i travel and not 1 issue..

I had to pay so much extra because apparently the insurance I had didn’t cover Expedia/economy car rental despite said insurance covering every other car rental agency. So either I was lied to or it’s just economy and I’m never going to rent from them/expedia again. I was also given a number to call travel guard which is not able to cover after the rental purchase was made. The car was also full of dog hair. In total this rental cost me 200$ instead of the 40 +30 I paid for the rental and insurance initially. Huge rip off. Took forever and is so inconvenient to get to without a car! Insane. Never again.

Took a long time to get the car. First of all, there shuttle only comes to remote rental car center near LAX. You need to take a bus to get there. Then you take there shuttle to get to their office. It took me almost an hour to get the get and be on my way. There were two agents working the desk and they were really helpful but, the whole process was slow. I had to wait a long time.

After my experience with this company I understand why they have a low score, initially I let myself be carried away because they offered me a very low price, but when I pick up the car the cost was going to be higher than the other companies with better score, so I decided to go and rent with another company, I do not recommend ECONOMY RENT A CAR for anything, very bad service and unethical

Total rip off like priceline who mentioned Unlimited kms on the invoice and then refused to refund me. They started showing me terms and policies when the Invoice clearly shows Unlimited kms. Spolied my trip. Lost my money and had to book another place. Waste of time. Terrible experience.

It was really hard to find the shuttle driver and when we did it took us to a sketchy feeling part of town took us into a warehouse and had us talk with a representative with a very heavy accent over a computer screen. We were not told where to bring the car back - turns out we had to find the sketchy warehouse back and they could not take us back to our hotel even though it was closer than the airport.

There was a minor scratch at the bottom of the front bumper which is not visible unless you are on your knees. As far as I am concerned we didn’t do anything to cause it. It may be already there and we didn’t notice when we took the care at midnight. At any rate my gripe is with how they handled this situation. We bought most expensive coverage possible with them which is twice the rental price itself. But during checkout they stalled us because of this issue even though we told them that we are cutting too close to our departure time and requested them to call the insurance and get it reimbursed because we already bought the coverage. But they insisted on us calling them and we couldn’t because we didn’t have local mobile plan. After lot of back and forth they checked other contracts on the vehicle and probably figured out that the damage was already there and the let us off the hook. It was a happy ending but the whole drama could have been avoided if they had customer service at the forefront of their minds.

Pick up and drop off were very easy. Everyone was so nice. We also experienced a problem after we headed south. The Jaco Alamo office was very quick to fix the problem and get us back on the road. Gracias!!

Well, the Alamo complete insurance package is crazy expensive

Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.

The staff are so kind and helpful. We have only had great experiences with Alamo and this was no different. Easy pickup and drop off.

The vehicle was on the older side and had an after market radio which didn't work all that well. Not a big deal though

I wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).

It took them 45-60 minutes to check out each guest, were understaffed, and were not communicative about the situation. They were oversold and did not have the car we reserved. After waiting in line for 2 hours we left, went to another agency and had a better car, at the same price, in no more than 15 minutes. Zero stars avoid this place

near airport; fast shuttle; air conditioned office while checking in; insurance requirements are expensive but worth it for the peace of mind; return was super easy; shuttle back to the airport was quick with only a few minutes wait time. overall great experience -- especially since the car I got was basically brand-new, used diesel and therefore cost almost nothing, and supported Android Auto for access to my music and maps.

Borderline scam, and I place about 60% blame on Expedia/carrentals.com/kayak. When I came to pick up the car, the price suddenly doubled due to the “mandatory” liability insurance that was not at all disclosed in any of the previous communications from CarRentals.com or Avis. Moreover, I had to reach out to the (superb) Amex support team to get a letter of coverage (at night in a foreign country) to avoid having to buy optional CDW insurance from Avis as well. Again, this was in no way disclosed at any time between the booking and the pickup. A terrible way to start a great vacation! I recommend looking up an independent car rental company and skipping both Avis and these middlemen.

Used a credit card that has full coverage insurance for 30 days. However once we arrived the agent wanted a letter with our name and card number stating the coverage. Credit card company could not provide the letter in a day therefore we were charged an extra $40 per day for Avis insurance coverage. We witnessed serval people with same problem. We did not have the same problem last year when we booked with another car rental company.

They helped call around to find another rental agency that had a car for us around the same price point. It didn't work though because their age policy was different.

Cons:

There was no car. We went to pick it up and they hadn't received our request and didn't even have the caright we reserved.

Car was very old, beaten up and underpowered. REALLY wasn't clear on insurance and it ended up costing A LOT more than expected. I'm not sure why I bought 3rd party insurance, it didn't really save me anything.

Car cost 3.5 times my confirmed rate. They tried to charge me 5.5 and I said that's enough. Most of money extra was insurance and additional add ons such as license charge. Never had this experience before. Very low class!

Pick up was a nightmare. We were completely lied to about the price online. When we just so happen to have printed out the pricing we were given online they did give us a discount but still at about double the price we agreed to.

Cons:

You need to vet your providers prior to displaying prices. The price you listed vs the price we had to pay was vastly different.

Drop off, paid for full coverage had 2 flats and tried to make me admit to an accident/mark on the car. All I wanted was an apology for all the bald tires and the wanted me to fill out paperwork. I paid for full-all coverage and I should not have had as many issues as I did for that much money

The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.

Cons:

We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.

National wouldn't honor the insurance I was encouraged to purchase when I reserved the car online. Total waste of $70!! After loading the car we found out the air conditioner didn't work, had to go though whole check out process again for another car.

Pros:

The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.

Cons:

Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.

I reserved an automatic SUV a week in advance. When I got there they told me they only have manual pickup tucks and told me I was SOL, had no other options and my only choice was take that at the same rate or cancel my reservation. We cancelled and went to Enterprise. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all cost!

Friendly staff, quick process, and decent price. Made a 10-day reservation for an SUV for about $325, and had to pay the local insurance for the vehicle. In the grand scheme of the cost and everything that went with it, it was totally worth it.

Pros:

Car was fine, and I was able to drop it off at the airport before they opened.

Cons:

I showed them the letter from Wells Fargo stating that my Visa covers collision damage "up to the entire value of the vehicle" but they refused to accept it because it did not show a dollar limit. Never had this problem before with any rental company in my last 15 Costa Rica rentals.

Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745

Cons:

Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!

This is not a real business. They lie about the amount you have to pay in Costa Rica taxes. They take one hour to pick us up from the airport. Cars and installation is a rundown. Horrible experience.

The pick up was not good - very hard to find van, took 30-40 minutes just to get picked up (while many other car rental agency vans came and went). Car itself was not good - over 175k miles, ancient features, no audio, could barely make it up large hills, could not accelerate at all (which is a problem on Costa Rica roads). The best part was the drop off process - that was very quick and easy.

If comfort and safety are of no interest to you then this is your car! Still have a big binder of CDs laying around the house from your teens? Hate back up cameras and automatic transmissions? Think those pesky key fobs are just and inconvenience? This is the car for you! If you would like to double the price for the “mandatory insurance” and get a hold put on your credit card for the entire value of the vehicle, this is the car for you! One positive is that even if you forget something in the car no one is breaking in, because you have the worst car in the lot no matter where you go! Honestly, it’s a shame that kayak recommends places like this. I thought that maybe other rental companies didn’t operate in Costa Rica so this was a good option… turns out all the major car rental companies are there and it doesn’t cost any more than this place. The staff was nice enough, just doing their job… but you can get that most places.

New Chinese car was a piece of junk. The radio would not pickup one single station, phone charging jack didn’t work, car was underpowered for its size, gas economy was approximately 10-12 MPG because you had to give it full throttle most of the time ie: passing, hills .But worst of all price quoted $400 for two weeks but when we picked it up there was an additional $400 in hidden fees. The agent said it was all due to government regulations (who knows as at that point there was no way to check) so it cost us more than a three week rental last year. To say I am dissatisfied would be an understatement!

The vehicle was compact and conducive to very questionable roads throughout our stay in Costa Rica. We were disappointed to find out upon arriving to the area where we were staying that the USB port in the SUV did not work. Since most individuals renting are relying upon their phones for GPS in a foreign country (as was the case for us), we could not have made do without having the ability to charge our phone. As such, it resulted in us buying a power bank that cost us over $80 USD. A functional USB port in any rental is of high priority. In our minds, this should have resulted in a discount after the fact, especially in light of the additional expenditure that resulted for us.

Kayak sold me an invalid insurance that was not licensed in Costa Rica leading me to believe the rental was about half the cost of what it ended up being.. had I known the cost up front, I would not have booked the reservation. The beginning of our trip felt like a scam and now I have to try and get a refund for invalid insurance. WATCH OUT FOR THIS SCAM

The car Rental experience was mediocre however it took an hour to do paper work. The site is not straight forward with fees. I asked for a different location drop off quote, and once I was at the rental place they charge $50.00 extra. Furthermore they won’t take the insurance protection provided by the credit card unless you bring a letter from the credit card stating that. So beware, a $40.00 dollars par day rent turns out to be over a $100.00 per day. What can you do better, so you ask? LET CUSTOMERS KNOW UPFRONT OF HIDDEN FEES, SO THYE CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION. (I am not intending to yell by using capital letters, I am just trying to help you do better)

I had a good experience with Routes this time. It took 10 minutes to be picked up at the rental center even though it was 1 in the morning. The car was great and when I brought the car back they dropped me at the terminal.

Drop off directly on the airport, would be awesome, since Liberia office is far from the airport, and even though company provide shuttle bus, it is still a waste of time going back and forth. I have hardly made it to my plane, because of huge traffic on the route (road construction) and accident between airport and the renting office.
