Pros:
Pick up and drop off were very easy. Everyone was so nice. We also experienced a problem after we headed south. The Jaco Alamo office was very quick to fix the problem and get us back on the road. Gracias!!Cons:

Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.9.6 Wonderful

I wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).Avis

They helped call around to find another rental agency that had a car for us around the same price point. It didn't work though because their age policy was different.Cons:

Car cost 3.5 times my confirmed rate. They tried to charge me 5.5 and I said that's enough. Most of money extra was insurance and additional add ons such as license charge. Never had this experience before. Very low class!National

Pick up was a nightmare. We were completely lied to about the price online. When we just so happen to have printed out the pricing we were given online they did give us a discount but still at about double the price we agreed to.Cons:

Drop off, paid for full coverage had 2 flats and tried to make me admit to an accident/mark on the car. All I wanted was an apology for all the bald tires and the wanted me to fill out paperwork. Pros:
The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.Cons:
We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.8.0 Very good

National wouldn't honor the insurance I was encouraged to purchase when I reserved the car online. Total waste of $70!! After loading the car we found out the air conditioner didn't work, had to go though whole check out process again for another car.2.0 Poor

Pros:
The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.Cons:
Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.10.0 Wonderful

Car was fine, and I was able to drop it off at the airport before they opened.Cons:
I showed them the letter from Wells Fargo stating that my Visa covers collision damage "up to the entire value of the vehicle" but they refused to accept it because it did not show a dollar limit. Never had this problem before with any rental company in my last 15 Costa Rica rentals.10.0 Wonderful

Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745Cons:
Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!U-Save
