Read the fine printPros: Relatively cheap Staff was helpful Upgraded for minimum ($5 a day) chargeCons: I wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).

Rate quoted online is not correct!Pros: The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons: The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.

Don't buy insurance from Kayak!Pros: Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport.Cons: The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.

Pros: Car worked fine and handled the rough roads well.Cons: The pickup took about an hour even though there was no line. Just really slow. The agent told me that I had to buy insurance coverage for liability, which nearly doubled the total price. If he is right that this is required, there should be a clearer warning when the booking is made online. Even with this insurance, the price was good by U.S. standards, but it was an unpleasant surprise upon arrival.

They did help in tracking down our luggage, but it was up to us to make arrangement to to meet up with that customer and go pick up our luggage.

Pros: The people were friendly and (thankfully) spoke English. The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.Cons: I opted out of insurance when I booked it, and that was probably a mistake. I think it was a lot cheaper if I had booked it online, and without this I had to buy there and it was almost twice the price of the car. That SUCKED.
Beware of uncharges and shady additionsPros: The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.Cons: Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.

Cons: Beware - The counter reps will try to sell you the prepaid petrol, stating it is cheaper at Budget than at petrol stations. This is not true. Also decline the damage insurance even if they claim it is 'mandatory'. They're running a scam at this location. The San Jose location clearly advertises that you can decline the insurance if your credit card covers rental insurance - just make sure to have a document from your credit card company (all it takes is a quick phone call) clearly stating that your rental will be covered in Costa Rica.

Car wasn't great. Slow return servicePros: The pickup service at the airport was fast and the driver was very professional. Check in at the desk was relatively quick, but I have had better in LIR (Alamo). The wifi service was also a great option instead of the GPS unit, although it was 20 USD per day, which seemed excessiveCons: The SUV I rented was an older Daihatsu with one plug for the wifi hotspot or my phone, so I could not charge both at the same time. Overall the car was fairly scratched up and there was a baseball sized hole in the grill. When I returned the car, they have a new return station and the person checking the car makes you wait as he thoroughly checks for dents, scratches, windshield wipers, broken windshield/windows. He also did not use the agreed-upon inspection that showed damage already on the vehicle.

One of us had to ride without s seat belt. Very frustrating!!! We tried to safeguard against both of these and feel very taken advantage of!!!
Poor service at drop offPros: Pick was OK, good services...a little unstructured but wanted to make sure I knew everythingCons: Drop off, paid for full coverage had 2 flats and tried to make me admit to an accident/mark on the car. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.Cons: We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. When we finally got to the rental counter, they surprised us with government mandated insurance, which caused the price to skyrocket. By the end of it, the cheapest option we had, which was “insurance” that still has us liable for all damages and expenses to the sum of $500+ for a week. Kayak good - Allianz Travel Insurance Policy - InvalidPros: Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745Cons: Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. Insurance Scam and damage scam--awfulPros: Our vehicle was fine and available but had many scratches and a dented bumper.Cons: We were forced to pay for full coverage insurance from thrifty at the counter by the agent. We had already purchased insurance thru Allianz when we booked online. This was refused. We had to pay an additional 45$ per day on top of our plan we already paid for. We refused and they wouldn't give us a car or lesser basic option. Since it was late at night with a child and we were offsite we felt very vulnerable with no great options. Our quote of 301$ became 698$ plus 90$ we already paid. When we returned the manage told us there was a basic package for 17$ per day. Also they blamed us for a dent in bumper which was another scam. We had photos to dispute. We were not charged since we had full coverage but if we hadn't they planned to hit us up for that too. Still waiting to hear back from management at Thrifty Liberia. We paid for the extra insurance when we booked online and when we got to Avis they said that they wouldn't take that insurance, even after we showed proof of it. We rented the car with our credit card that also had insurance, but they made us pay $29 extra per day in insurance. They said that was the basic rate and wouldn't let us take the car without it. So we paid for insurance twice. We watched as they did it to the guy who came behind us too. We researched it and we had the right to refuse but then they had the right to refuse our rental. We were in the country with kids and couldn't be stuck without a car so they had us in a catch 22. We paid the extra money, but for a 7 day rental it was nearly twice the original amount. While there are shuttle and bus services that bring visitors into the city from the airport or other locations, public transportation within Liberia is limited, making taxis one of the most viable modes of transport. By securing a Liberia car rental, travelers can have the autonomy and flexibility to travel throughout the city without being restricted by ride availability and without having to waste time waiting for a ride to arrive. What’s more, independent vehicles will put off-the-beaten-path locations within reach and will allow travelers to determine arrival and departure times for outings. Coupled with the affordability of rental vehicles in Liberia, the option is also cost-effective.
The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport, otherwise referred to as the Liberia Costa Rica Airport (LIR), hosts several car rental kiosks for rental companies, including Enterprise, Budget, Avis, National, Sixt, and Europcar, among others. There are representatives for the companies at the airport, so whether you have a reservation or not, you can usually grab a car rental in Liberia from here. As you’re exiting the terminal, you’ll find rental desks to the far left of the building, with vehicles in the adjacent parking lot.
The road systems throughout Costa Rica were updated to include stoplights at several intersections where previously there had only been stop signs, however, in many of these updated locations, the original stop signs were not removed, so the intersection includes both forms of traffic instruction. If you come across such an intersection while driving your car rental in Liberia, you will want to take heed of the traffic light—if the light indicates green, proceed through the intersection without stopping.
The months of January through early May tend to be peak tourist season in Liberia since these are the driest months of the year. Travelers can expect roadways to be more congested during these periods, especially given the fact that limited public transportation options encourage visitors to rent personal vehicles. Drivers in rental cars should stay alert on these more crowded roadways, particularly when it comes to buses and 18-wheelers, as they often do not yield to passenger cars—it is recommended to let these types of vehicles pass. Also stay alert for motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

To make the drives more comfortable, an SUV, 4WD, or other such vehicles would be suitable options for travelers to the city. What’s more, visitors anticipating excursions to locations off-the-beaten-path will benefit from the added ruggedness and durability afforded by a car designed to navigate uneven roads.
