It took them 45-60 minutes to check out each guest, were understaffed, and were not communicative about the situation. They were oversold and did not have the car we reserved. After waiting in line for 2 hours we left, went to another agency and had a better car, at the same price, in no more than 15 minutes. Zero stars avoid this place

near airport; fast shuttle; air conditioned office while checking in; insurance requirements are expensive but worth it for the peace of mind; return was super easy; shuttle back to the airport was quick with only a few minutes wait time. overall great experience -- especially since the car I got was basically brand-new, used diesel and therefore cost almost nothing, and supported Android Auto for access to my music and maps.

Borderline scam, and I place about 60% blame on Expedia/carrentals.com/kayak. When I came to pick up the car, the price suddenly doubled due to the “mandatory” liability insurance that was not at all disclosed in any of the previous communications from CarRentals.com or Avis. Moreover, I had to reach out to the (superb) Amex support team to get a letter of coverage (at night in a foreign country) to avoid having to buy optional CDW insurance from Avis as well. Again, this was in no way disclosed at any time between the booking and the pickup. A terrible way to start a great vacation! I recommend looking up an independent car rental company and skipping both Avis and these middlemen.

Used a credit card that has full coverage insurance for 30 days. However once we arrived the agent wanted a letter with our name and card number stating the coverage. Credit card company could not provide the letter in a day therefore we were charged an extra $40 per day for Avis insurance coverage. We witnessed serval people with same problem. We did not have the same problem last year when we booked with another car rental company.

Pros:

The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.

Cons:

Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.

I reserved an automatic SUV a week in advance. When I got there they told me they only have manual pickup tucks and told me I was SOL, had no other options and my only choice was take that at the same rate or cancel my reservation. We cancelled and went to Enterprise. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all cost!

Pros:

Friendly staff, quick process, and decent price. Made a 10-day reservation for an SUV for about $325, and had to pay the local insurance for the vehicle. In the grand scheme of the cost and everything that went with it, it was totally worth it.

Pros:

Car was fine, and I was able to drop it off at the airport before they opened.

Cons:

I showed them the letter from Wells Fargo stating that my Visa covers collision damage "up to the entire value of the vehicle" but they refused to accept it because it did not show a dollar limit. Never had this problem before with any rental company in my last 15 Costa Rica rentals.

I called their international number to provide my flight information and was assured that someone's would be there to pick me up when I arrived even if my flight was delayed. I was left stranded at the airport with no car and had to rush make alternate araingements. Scary and unfrofessional treatment.

Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745

Cons:

Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. Kindly awaiting your response and the reimbursement of the insurance costs. Best regards

When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!

Kayak sold me an invalid insurance that was not licensed in Costa Rica leading me to believe the rental was about half the cost of what it ended up being.. had I known the cost up front, I would not have booked the reservation. The beginning of our trip felt like a scam and now I have to try and get a refund for invalid insurance. WATCH OUT FOR THIS SCAM

Lots of extra charges. Force you to buy excess unneeded insurance unless you have a letter from your bank. Scam and agents are paid on commission.
