Pros: It was really nice to meet and talk to Chris, the hotel owner, and Judie. Freddie, the big black dog was also a delight. Amazing afternoon tea and breakfast. Definitely recommend everybody to have a drink at the bar, so relaxing!
Cons: I think I can hear the sound from the 1st floor in the morning. (i stayed at 2nd floor)
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The owner and staff were very friendly, and breakfast was also very nice. We stayed there to join the Karuizawa half marathon and they drove us to the starting point on the day of the race!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Thank you the owner Cris, the cute dog Freddie, and friendly staff members! Cris kindly drove us to the station and some must-see sites. It was very helpful! We also enjoyed traditional British breakfast including tasty "saba", which is a fish both British and Japanese people love! We had a really relaxing fun time in cozy lovely Wellies!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A cosy hotel, helpful manager, peaceful environment, & a friendly dog, Freddie
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing hospitality and great family like atmosphere! The hotel owner Chris, Judy and rest of the staff (and his dog Freddy of course!) made our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. Their British breakfast is great and it’s highly recommend to have their dinner one night. Since everyone is so friendly and approachable, we felt like we are at home from morning till midnight. Thank you very much for everything and we’ll definitely come back when we are back in Karuizawa! :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is set in an idyllic mountain location with so much to see. The room was lovely and as a British person felt very authentic. By far it was the best British style food we have ever had in Japan, the full English breakfast with proper home cured bacon was a delight, and the 4 course British meal was honestly better than what you would get in the UK. To top it all off, Chris, Judy and all of the staff (including Freddie the dog) were lovely, interesting, attentive and really go the extra mile to make every guest feel welcome! Cannot wait to come back and stay there again soon :)
Cons: I honestly can't think of anything I could fault the hotel on, unless they can find a way to control the weather in which case less rain would be good :P
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very good service quality. Room is clean, comfortable, great English gardening, delicious breakfast, boss is nice, his puppy is cute.

Cons: Staffs were not very helpful.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Hotel staff are very professional and friendly, English ability is also very good. Prompt services regarding the hotel shuttle transfer back and forth to the station. And the hotel itself is very modern and stylish.
Cons: The breakfast selection is quite limited, but tasty though.

Pros: The service is excellent! Staff can speak perfect English. Hotel is very clean and spacious. Great location and within walking distance to many spots. Recommended!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: To be very honest, it is truly Above and Beyond!. I can’t even describe how execellent and superb the hotel is. It’s the best blend between the old charm of hospitality culture with the modern day facillty. The room, the decor is so cosy and classy, the staffs are all excellent!, the spa is zen minimalist, the location is so easy and convenient, very close the station and famous Kyu-Karuizawa Street. Also very easy to go anywhere in town. Very well recommended! Thank you to all the staffs to make me feel truly at home. Definitely I would come back again.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was beautiful and very close to Karuizawa station. We enjoyed the spa and the gym, and the courtyard was amazing. We plan to return! Staff was incredibly helpful and attentive!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: 15~20mins walk from JR. hotel offers transport which is very nice. but I also like walking that path , super relaxing. welcoming drink and snacks are really cool excellent service. feel very welcoming and relaxing. very nice public bath with nice products breakfast is good and with nice view
Cons: the little balcony is not as nice as expected. the suana seems too hot ? bicycle can only be used freely for 1hr... with this price of the hotel, I think it can be a favor for tenants to use freely during the day. actually any choices of the pillow? not a special problem of this hotel but of most hotels... but I expect a hotel with this class should offer more options. I didnt find /ask. if there is, would be good.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: warm hospitality and nice room!

Pros: The people that own and run this ryokan were so fantastic. They genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay. We loved the onsen options and everything, everywhere, was spotlessly clean.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly staff who made me feel very welcomed and gave me personal attention, good breakfast, nice facilities and good location close to the tourist attractions.
Cons: -
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. The place is super cozy with very friendly staff. Close to both the bus station and the Yubatake as well
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The place is really a piece of culture itself, it's a traditional house and it has private onsen rooms, wich I find vary convinient for foreingers that may have some embarassment about getting naked in front of other people. The people that work there is really nice and attentive, they give you a welcome tea with sweets wich is delicious. You have free coffee and tea avariable 24hs plus lemonade water or other natural flavored water. The room is very spacious and the bed was huge! Take in count this place is traditional house so the walls are very thin, luckly my neighbours were good!
Cons: Personally I don't like japanese breakfast and there was no alternative option that I knew of. But If you are into fish, rice, soup and other japanese traditional foods, then you are going to love it!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Good location, service and hospitality
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Booked the largest suite with its own private toilet & bath / onsen, and didn't regret it one bit! The suite was beautiful, clean, cozy, and very spacious with 2 bedrooms (1 with bed / 1 with tatami mat), living room, and a kitchen. There was was a tea and coffee machine with lots of free coffee pods in different flavors. Some of the staff spoke little english, but everyone we met at Hanaingen were very friendly, accommodating, and always smiling. Breakfast consisted of miso soup, rice rolls, a small chunk of salmon, beans, and rice cake dessert which were beautifully plated on a tray. Five stars for this wonderful bed and breakfast even if it was a bit on the expensive side.
Cons: Check out was too early at 10am, but I guess that's the standard for most hotels in Japan.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Friendly family run accommodation. Very welcoming and helpful
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hosts and staff - from check-in to check-out we were greeted warmly and everyone was very helpful and thoughtful. There is no elevator, as is frequently the case in accommodations such as this. The staff will carry your luggage for you. They brought our very heavy bags up the stairs to our room and offered to carry them down stairs when we left. Perfect location - short walk from bus station (mostly downhill from and uphill to) and downhill to and uphill from Yutabake. Fabulous breakfasts: we stayed 3 days and loved the fact that we were served a different breakfast each day, two Japanese breakfasts with a Western breakfast on our second morning. We preferred the Japanese breakfasts - after all we are in Japan. Wonderful rooms - we loved our space. We loved the baths. We loved the place. We loved everything!!
Cons: We loved everything! We have nothing negative to say.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: I had a great time in Koya Backpackers. The host is very friendly and warm. The hostel is very clean and has all the necessary facilities. We had a hot-pot dinner and wonderful conversations. It is a little far from Karuizawa and Kyu-Karuizawa station but is well-connected by regular buses.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing, knowledgeable and friendly host, beautiful house and surrounding property and comfortable sleeping arrangements.
Cons: That I only stayed one night! Wish I could stay longer.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful surroundings, giant duvets, electric heaters in every room and the communal root of backpacking culture at its finest! The owner, Yusuke, is very personable and thinks only of his guests before anything else. I truly respect him, as well as his home and his passion for nature and backpacking. Thank you!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The owner (Yusuke) was great! We had good talks, Yusuke is a very welcoming host who wants his guests to feel at home. The house itself is a traditional Japanese house that is very well maintained. Although I visited at the beginning of November (off-season, Karuizawa gets pretty chilly), I felt comfortable because there were heaters in the dorm as well as in the living room and Yusuke would make sure there was always hot water ready for tea (or soup). I would stay again!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: The host is very very nice and caring. He is very friendly to give recommendation for tourists. He is also good at english. The house is traditional Japanese building with over 100 years history, but it’s still with good hygiene and very comfortable to stay, especially the showering and toilet which are modern setting~ Just like a house inside forest. I like it very much!
Cons: A bit noisy nearby the next room because of thin wall.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Super friendly host who was kind and responsive to our needs, and talked to us a lot, took part in the fun when everyone staying at the hostel met to chat in the evening. Great time all around, highly recommended. ぜひ行ってみてください。本当に楽しかったです。
Cons: Location is a bit far out, and busses don't seem to run late. Can't be helped, but the property itself and its local area make up for it. Very peaceful.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Love to sit at the corridor or chill in the garden, have a cup of drip coffee and chat with friends n new people we met there
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything!!!
Cons: It's sooooo far away from the city center, it's great, I just really recommend to go with a car
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The host was exceptionally pleasant, helpful, and professional. His English was excellent. The facilities are, as you would expect, somewhat minimalist, but so is the price. Everything was very clean and well arranged, and it felt like a community rather than just a rented room. A Saturday night barbecue was a very nice touch, and part of the community feeling. The location was perfect or what I wanted to do - birding in the Wild Bird Forest - and also convenient to the hot springs. It met all my expectations and provided a wonderful experience, not just another hotel stay.
Cons: Snoring roommate, but that's a hazard of every hostel, and not under the control of the host.
2.5 Mediocre
Pros: The BBQ
Cons: The host

Cons: There were no dining facilities in this property. So no hot breakfast. They give you a bag containing a bun, cereal, juice, yogurt, etc when you check in. For dinner, take note that many of the town's restaurants close early, around 7.30 pm. There were no hot baths in the property.

Cons: Room get cold in the night, the kerosene heater is switched off after 3 hours (heating blanket available but too hot), so the room get cold in winter. Even this property is a good deal compare to other places, Kusatsu is an expensive place to stay (remote and limited choices)
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Lovely and helpful staff, 湯畑 (yubatake) literally around the corner - about a 2 minute walk. Close to free onsens and provided a very helpful map of these.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Location is a 5 min. down-hill walk from the bus terminal, and another 3 min down-hill walk to the main attraction, very convenient when arriving and a small walk up-hill when departing. It is a very typical traditional Japanese onsen hotel, all complete with bathing area, both indoors and outdoors, and breakfast consisted of all local produce. The staff's English is passable, but there was one who speaks Mandarin so we mostly asked her if we had any questions.
Cons: The wifi connection was not good as it is linked to the local free wifi. However, being in Kusatsu means that you can really take a break and enjoy being cut-off for a day or so.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: What did I like? Well, to be short, everything. Really. The hotel was so clean, so nice, and so quiet. The room was large, with very comfortable beds, and I slept for the whole night. Also, the little private Onsen on the ground floor was very relaxing. The manager lady was most accommodating, and since I don't speak Japanese, we worked things out with hands, feet and lots of smiles :) And then, last but not least, I say: take the breakfast. Whatever you do: TAKE the BREAKFAST! Is was, in one word, fantastic. Really! Trust me :)) The real Japanese Deal.

9.3 Excellent
Pros: The interior of the ryokan was very nice and comfortable. The staff was very accommodating and the chef was excellent. Our stay was very pleasant. If it had been better located this place would have got a full score from us. It cost about 2100 Yen to get to town by taxi and the buses are not very frequent during the time we were there which was January.
Cons: Location being quite far from the main town of Karuizawa.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing and so was the food! The property is immaculately fitted out.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room and bathroom are ace!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were unbelievably welcoming, attentive and eager to help in any way they could - the customer service I experienced was amongst the best I've ever had. The hostel is beautiful, stylish and comfortable; it's incredibly clean and the communal spaces are actually the kind of places you want to spend time in! The food is delicious, beautifully presented and all locally sourced including cheese (not so common in Japan); the quality was of a standard I would expect from a much more expensive and exclusive restaurant or hotel in Tokyo and I would have happily paid such prices! All in all Kutsukake Stay is INCREDIBLE value for money, I would (and will) go back to Karuizawa for the sole purpose of staying there. 5 star customer service for a fraction of the price. Its not often that the already excellent reviews don't do a place justice but this is one of the exceptions!
Cons: nothing!

Pros: Nice old fashioned room with plenty of space. Was good to have windows which opened so we could have fresh air ventilation rather than AC. Located about halfway between the Station and the tourist shopping Ginza. Staff very helpful. The driver of the shuttle to the station gave us his umbrella when he realised we didn’t have one. One staff member spoke excellent English.

Pros: Very friendly and helpful host. Felt like we were part of the family.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Everything Perfect ! Our guest speaks english and he is very professionnal. He even changed the breakfast to adapt to tje group. We were a group of 22 people and everybody appreciated the hôtel. Games for kids. Onsen. There are also High standing rooms with private onsen.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: We arrived on a Thursday and we might have been the only guests. We enjoyed both their public and private onsens. We slept well on the futons. Wearing yukatas there and around the town was nice and even gets you discounts at some places. The staff were all really friendly and enthusiastic and we were given a lift down to the bus station. It was superb value considering the price of other ryokans and we would happily stay there again. They have a useful town brochure in English available at reception.
Cons: We mentioned that this was our first visit to a ryokan or onsen, so it would have been good to have been given a little explanation about the Yukata and onsen etiquette. We later found a poster on a wall near their onsen's entrance about the etiquette. As we had a Japanese style room, it would have been good for them to explain what happens about the futons etc. We'd read repeatedly that, at ryokans, staff change the room from day to night mode, but this doesn't happen here, you do it yourself. This wasn't a problem, it would just have been good to know. Breakfast was 07:30 to 08:30, which was early for us but may be normal for ryokans. It was located a steep uphill walk from the centre. The yukata were rather short for us. With our room category the only place we could take a shower was in the onsen areas, i.e. the Shared Bathroom is only toilets and sinks.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I liked the facilities- very clean and cozy. Their own onsen had great water too! Breakfast was excellent!
Cons: I had to do bit of a walk to the main onsen area- for like 10min which wasn’t a big deal for spring summer but might be an issue for someone trying to go there in winter with all the snow.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location of the hotel is great as it is just a short walk from the station away from the tourist crowds. The hotel has a wonderful homey feel. We had a large double room with a private bathroom which was enormous, just fantastic. We ate at the restaurant at the hotel both nights and would highly recommend. The owner, Taz, and his wife, were perfect hosts and nothing was a problem. Overall the staff, service and facilities were amazing and we had a wonderful stay. Highly recommend this hotel if staying in Kusatsu.

Great area. Plenty of parking. Staff communicated great in English. LOVED the private hot springs in our room.
Cons: Everything was great, I really wouldn't change anything. Great location and would highly recommend it.

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional and typical Japanese onsen hotel. Definitely offers best experiences for tourists who wants to give a try on Japanese Onsen
Cons: Due to the winter time, the rooms are slightly overheated and too dried
7.0 Good
Pros: the breakfast was ok but the dinner is a little bit disappointed and the staff served too fast in less than a hour we have to finish the whole meal
Cons: the male receptionist's English is very poor, he does not understand English at all, the lady who took us in the room did not explain much then quickly ran away, she supposed explain how can we get the wifi, there is something we can see around this area and something she highly recommend for the first time tourist. I am totally disappointed about this ryokan.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is so great and comfortable
Cons: Nope
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was great! Staff was kind and spoke english, the room (we asked for a japanese style room) was comfortable and big enough for us, the ryokan's onsens were awesome, the food was very tasty. The location is perfect, very close to city center and other onsen in the city. Definitely recommend this place!
4.5 Okay
Pros: Private onsen however we charged on top of our already exhorbitant room rate for this.
Cons: This was not good value for money at all - there was nothing special or exceptional about the stay. I expected a far more luxurious, interesting, or beautiful stay for the price we were charged.
6.8 Good
Pros: Me personally, nothing! Fortunatly my Wife was ok with the place maybe because she is Chinese and more adaptable with deep Japanese style.
Cons: Only 1 staff can speak english!! Incredible when it is supposed to be a 5 stars hotel and according to the price!
9.5 Excellent
Pros: Very good service!

Pros: The owners were amazing! Steve was so kind! He and I communicated often, before my friend and I stayed at his hotel. He picked us up from the train station. He warmed up our late dinner that we bought from the store too. He prepared the jacuzzi/private onsen bath, so my friend and I could use it; at short notice! Breakfast the following morning was so good. Loved the french toast! Our room was clean and nice. He even made a map for us, to help us with our sightseeing the next day! I personally loved the Hawaiian theme of the hotel. Steve informed us that winter is off-season in Karuizawa. But if I'm ever in Karuizawa again, I will definitely stay in his hotel! I would love to come back in Autumn. I highly recommend his hotel. He is really welcoming to foreigners.
Cons: Everything was great! No complaints!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The host give his opinion after listening to your travel plan in Karuizawa and suggest good restaurants. What i like most is he took me to local supermarket to buy sweet gifts, what a smart idea!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Steven, the owner, was absolutely wonderful and the food was incredible!!!
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Steven and his wife were great hosts and the stay overall was excellent. They always went extra miles to search for us places we're interested to visit and to help us feel at home. The most impressive thing is the cooking skill of Steven! He's a superb chef and the food was always out of our expectation! He made us western breakfast for the first day, then Japanese, then french! And sometimes they would serve Hawaiian dinner, it costs 3,000 Yen per person but it's worthy of money! Very delicious and fulfilling! Highly recommend everyone to try it if they schedule a dinner! The bedroom was very neat and clean, and nicely decorated with a Hawaii style, with the temperature that we could adjust ourselves. It kept us warm in the snowy night we spent. The beds and pillows were very comfy, so we could take some good rest after driving a few hours from Narita. We stayed 3 nights there.
Cons: nothing
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The host is nice, we feel like home when arrived. The environment was clean, cozy and nicely decorated in Hawaiian style. Room size was average but it was big enough for us to open the suitcase. In the evening, the host served dinner in dining room. I enjoyed delicious dinner along with soft music and great chat with my friend and the host. The host gave us a lot of travelling info. and advices on Karuizawa. The meal was in western style, and it was cooked by the host!! You wont be disappointed to stay here!
Cons: No
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We arrived by car, and the location was very convenient to find, even in the dark. The place was very quiet and peaceful, a little ways off the main road. Breakfast of french toast was delicious, cooked by Steven and his wife, both very friendly and inviting people. They were so helpful in their recommendations of places to see, along with clear instructions of how to get there. Will definitely go back if in Karuizawa! :))))
Cons: Not a major problem, but the rooms could be a bit more sound proof. Could hear people with their luggage checking in and out.
9.5 Excellent
Pros: The host Steven is super nice. He picked me up from the station when I arrived from Tokyo. He made all guests feel welcomed and made sure every guest enjoy his stay to the full. The breakfast was delicious. I stayed there for 2 nights and I had two different breakfasts which were both tasty. Steven also drove me to the station after I checked out. Highly recommend to anyone going to Karuizawa.

Pros: Amazing staff! I love how they greet guests and check in, inviting guests to sit in the lounge and they do the check in process from there. At the far end of the town (take a taxi from the train station). Location was perfect for my group as we were walking the Nakasendo Way and it’s right outside the door!

9.5 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic atmosphere, especially around christmas time. Walking distance to kyu-karuizawa town which has lots of nice cafes (check out the hammock cafe - about 7mins walk from Mampei). Staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The price is extremely hard to beat for karuizawa. The hotel is also fun to walk around for its history, though the top floors weren't open at some places for some reason though still accessible. The staffs were also extremely friendly and welcoming. The location is also very close walk (5mins) to the old station street, which is where most of the action is for the city.
Cons: The location is a little far from the Prince outlet for the cold winter. Approximately 20mins of speed walking. At no fault of the hotel, the location (while city) does not have any night life at all.
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Everything. It’s an old hotel with charm.
Cons: Nothing
7.0 Good
Pros: It's a classic hotel and a gem at that, with a great bar and superb location in the forest.
Cons: The less expensive rooms are low value for the price and in need of a refresh.
7.5 Good
Pros: spacious room n vintage feel
Cons: a little bit far from main area
9.3 Excellent
Pros: Such a great place to visit with a lot of history. The room was super spacious and facilities were lovely. We didn’t eat at the hotel as for us, it was an easy walk into the town centre and an array of restaurants to choose from near by if you are going at the right time of year. We personally did walk to and from the train station and found this an easy couple of kilometres walk with luggage bags that had wheels. We also hired bikes so we could get around and this was definitely a highlight.
3.3 Mediocre
Pros: The location of the hotel was convenient.
Cons: The rooms are not comfortable, staff are unfriendly and lack training. The experience at dinners their rrstauarant was also very disappointing.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: I love the location of this hotel, also its long history and heritage. Staffs are very nice too~
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hotel with great service. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The cafe had a sumptuous menu and pretty view.
Cons: The hotel is a distance from the main street and might be hard to get food (hotel food was on the high side). We needed to grab a taxi from the train station to the hotel (around 1000 yen).
4.3 Okay
Pros: very disappointed by Manpei this time,,, we paid for the name and no quality in it,,,,accommodation was poor, not comfortable at all, definitely need renovation,, nothing special on main dining room either,, our expectation was all lost. We stayed at The Prince Karuizawa day before and this was much better with less cost,,,,Manpei has no fame any more,,, this legendary story is all gone,, will not go back,, fallen to 4 star hotel or less,,
Cons: see above
