Payless has great customer service for the situation we were out in. The insurance prices are crazy but at the end of the day it wasn’t Payless fault. This is a country requirement that we did understand prior to booking. The pick up was easy and Luis was great!! Drop off was simple as well and super friendly. Car was cleaned when we picked up and that was appreciated.

The check-in process took forever. It was a large line and at the beginning the attendance. Chatting among each other, Delaying the process. Finally, a young man came in. And checked in as many people as the previous to attendance did together. I’ve been to this car rental before, and it brought a memory of the last time we experience the same thing. Very frustrating.

I prepaid for my car only to get to the counter and wait for just under an hour. Once assigned a car, I again waited because I was then told my car was double booked. I finally got a car, and it was a great car. However, after turning it in on time I was charged for 3 additional days because they had me down as driving a completely different car. Definitely will Pay More next time and rent from someone else.

Getting from baggage claim to Payless terminal had to stand in long lines to get on the bus. The customer service agent was very nice and friendly. We ended up getting an electric car, but never told us about what charging stations we could use being not familiar with that type of electric car and where the charging stations were a big problem wasted a lot of time during our driving experience, trying to find chargers that would work.

Payless always comes through, the pickup and dropoff process is fast and easy never any issue.. The payless cars are very updated and reliable, the price is always affordable and the deposit is always given back as soon as you drop it off, no extra charges or fees.. The pick up drop off experience was horrible. Especially when dropping the car back off. The guy had AirPods in on the phone and they didn’t say a single word to me just waved me on. The pickup process they didn’t give my ID back and had to go back for it. Customer experience needs work

getting a ride from airport took half an hour, initial phone contact number didn't pick up, 17 callers wait for call to be answered. At drop off in early morning the office was closed, fortunetly one of the hotel workers saw me and another woman and told us where to park and drove us to airport.There should have been a sign at door directing to Hotel.

Took forever for the shuttle to arrive. The people getting off of the shuttle told me good luck getting a car. When we got to the rental car facility, the customers that were already there had been waiting so long to get their cars, I called an Uber instead so I didn’t miss my appointment. Since it was a non refundable rental, I lost my money.

When you use the GPS address in Google...it takes you to an industrial part of the airport. Get that fixed because it was frustrating.

Car itself was fine but given a lesser car than originally booked and for more money.

Beware! Counter staff at Avis Ireland seem to work on commission. Our person would not look up our reservation by the reservation #, we were then told the only automoatic available was a lesser car than we had reserved, for more money! Talked to a 2nd person and told it was high season and that was the rate + lots of add ons. If you want to use the insurance provided by your credit card (we have amex platinum - great coverage) they would put a hold on our account for $5000 euros OR we could pay 48 euros per day for their insurance!!!! Complete scam. Opted to have the hold put on our credit card. Other car companies may do this as well in Ireland. Added a huge amount of stress to an otherwise wonderful trip. Advice: do your homework ahead of time with lots of research on car company policies there.

The staff at Shannon Airport was super polite and informative. They even threw in a free GPS because they didn’t have the automatic transmission we reserved as we arrived early.

Cons:

The insurance is very pricey - although it’s a must have because the roads in Ireland are pretty treacherous to say the least.

The car got good gas milage.

Cons:

The headlights did not work and caused us to almost get in an accident while driving. It was very scary driving on the winding roads of Ireland with no headlights! The car was also way too expensive for the type of car I rented. Disappointed. Also when we returned the car, it took 20 minutes for the counter to close out my account. The guy next to us was able to close out 4 other customers in the time it took the guy helping me to close me out. Frustrating.

Did not have the 5 dr hatchback I reserved or "similar" and charged upgrade for a larger hatchback to avoid downgrade. I was essentially ignored at pick-up and had to call-out to get attention. Attendant then pointed out my car and said "keys are in it". GPS did not work.

we rented the car through carrentals.com. it was supposed to be large 7 passenger with 4 suitcases. unfortunately we had to fly into Dublin instead of Shannon. We could not get a clear understanding from Europcar whether you rented this size car in Ireland. 2 agents said no, one agent said yes. The two that said no, indicated the broker was mistaken and should not have offered the size we booked. This seems strange since Im sure we are not the first to rent a large Europcar in Ireland through your representative, carentals.com

I'm 77. Europcar (Ireland) won't rent a car without a letter from a doc if you're over 75. Fine (maybe). But there was NO warning about that -- so they turned me down and I got no car for my vacation. This is just horrible!

Drop-off was incredibly confusing: the drop off section was closed and directions to the after hours drop off were not well written and could have been more detailed. It ended up taking a half hour to return the vehicle.

I brushed a stone wall in Ireland to avoid a head on collision and was horrified to learn that the two insurance coverages I thought did not, in fact, cover Ireland. It seems that it would have been a courtesy for the rental agent to mention that, but I must take responsibility for my ignorance. The manager at the airport was rude, unhelpful, and sent me away in an uninsured car because he did not want to deal with the problem at 8:30 pm. I was told to come back in the morning. I drove long distances to get back and forth, wasted a day, and was horrified to learn Hertz has charged me $13,000 to fix cosmetic damage that can be filled and buffed. 20% of the value of a car to repair cosmetic damage?! There will be no opportunity to receive fair estimates, and no proof that the work is ever done. Do your insurance homework before you rent, and above all never use Hertz! I will be living with their nightmare for years to come.

Had to wait around half an hour to get the car when I had booked in advance, I would have expected them to know I was coming and therefore had a car ready. They didn't even have the one I booked (a Qashqai) so was given a Dacia Duster instead which was smaller than I was expecting. When I got it it was still muddy on the outside, probably because they had rushed to clean it.

This is as close to an extortion racket that I have ever experienced. The staff at the Hertz near Shannon Airport will charge you exorbitant amounts for any tiny scratch. We were assessed over $700 for three very short (the largest was less than 2 cm) thin (a couple of millimeters thick maybe) on the front bumper. These were not dents at all, just superficial scratches on a plastic bumper. In case you are thinking that this was just one person's bad experience be advised that 3 other people dropped off cars here while we were waiting for the "damage" report to be completed. All three of them were also being assessed for scratch damages. I do not know if those assessments were valid or not but they do illustrate a pattern. OK... you have been warned.

Pick up was extremely slow. Other companies served 2 customers to Sixt one. The problem seemed to be regarding insurance provided by credit card companies. I used a Chase issued card and was told that I must contact Chase and have them email a letter to confirm that they would provide coverage. I had never experienced anything like this and had to spend time on vacation dealing with it from Another country. They should make it clear at the time of reservations that this is necessary!

We did not have a good experience with Sixt. We had just come from Scotland where we rented with Arnold Clark and the contrast was notable to say the least. I feel badly for the guys that work at sixt - they were forced to deal with angry customers constantly for all of the hidden charges and fees that the company requires. Sixt charges a lower rate up front but when you get there, they need a written letter from your credit card company that your credit card covers car insurance in Ireland - what?! Why was that not something they told me 6 months prior when I booked the rental. So then we sat there on the phone with capital one for 20 min; only to find out that we were not covered so therefore required to buy their insurance. Then we were not allowed to switch the driver to my fiancé (I booked the car but he was going to drive) without adding him and paying an additional 25 euro a day. So we ended up essentially paying $200 in insurance and adding a driver which really seemed unnecessary. Overall it felt like such a dishonest experience. Lots of fine print and hidden fees that made it more expensive and more frustrating than just paying up front more and having a smooth experience. If you’re going to go with sixt- do your homework ahead. Make sure the driver is the one booking the car, that your credit card has insurance for the country, and have a written letter from them resdy to go. And be ready to be frustrated. Apologies to the kind man that helped us - it wasn’t his fault the company has terrible policies he has to enforce.

The only issue I had was that there was no mention of Third party insurance, the options or the cost of it until I was picking up the car in Shannon. I was a little blind sided by the amounts quoted at the counter. This should be part of the booking process. Also with returning the car, we should have been given better instructions on where to leave it. I assumed to leave it at the Sixt return location, as done in all other car rental returns, but when there, they told me to leave it in temporary parking lot. not a big deal, but took extra time. All else was great !!

Eventually was given an Nissan Qashqai which was a good car and served me well.

Cons:

I pre-booked a Hyundai Tucson SUV or similar and was offer a Dacia Duster. That is like saying a skateboard and a car are similar as they both have wheels. Was not happy to take this and the Thrifty agent conceded that I was not going to budge on this.

Returning the car was great - the rep was very helpful. And the car worked well. However, when picking up the car, we were hit with an unexpected 10 euro per day charge since I was providing my own insurance. At no point was this charged identified or explained during my booking on Kayak. This doubled the price of the rental. The rep when we picked up the car said the charge was mandatory. I felt swindled since this was a total surprise.

The absolute worst customer service. I would spent the money renting with another rental car company. They were cheaper at the beginning, but at the end they charged me €165 for a 1” “scratch” on the wheel. I was not the only one. At the time of return 3 other customers were complaining about getting charged for bogus “Damage” that comes from normal wear and tear of driving through Ireland roads. Some were getting charged up to €350. When asked to speak with a manager about the issue, I was denied and told that the “customer service representative” could help me. Obviously they did nothing. This place will try to scam you out of every last dollar! Since they are part of the Hertz name and all employees at Shannon airport worked under Hertz, do yourself a favor and stay away from Hertz and their underling names of Thrifty and Dollar.

Was handy to be able to get out luggage, rent out car, and be driving through the countryside within a 10 min period. Will definitely use this company again.

I liked the Jetta for size, handling, comfort as I drive VW/Audi cars at home. The drop off and pickup was at Shannon Airport which was very easy and quick. Sales agent was friendly and expeditious.

Cons:

The Dollar/Thrifty rental was connected with Hertz - which I did not know at the time and will not rent from Hertz due to a bad experience previously. Once at the counter, I found some "hidden" costs and an"upgrade" charge for an automatic that cost significantly more than a base rental for a standard and that were not listed on the rental information I had secured in advance - more than doubling the price. Buyer needs to beware about what the exact costs you are paying for since a good price that I found in advance became costly once at the rental counter and should have meant that I looked elsewhere. Since it was so early and after a long flight, I did not pursue other options in the airport.

We were told by kayak the rental would be 114 euro, but the rental actually cost us a little over 1000.00. This is a rediculous price for a standard / stick rental. We were hot over the head with extra costs at the counter... and had no choice but to pay. I amputating in a dispute with our credit.

Final price came in nearly double what we were originally quoted due to additional services (roadside assistance, personal insurance, etc.) being added by the agent at pickup. We specifically stated that we required no insurance (we have our own) & were not asked or informed about any of the other services/charges that were added. When we inquired about these charges at drop-off we were told it was too late to protest or receive a refund. Absolute rip-off.

Please make it a obvious disclaimer that you need to have written proof of a third party insurance carrier and in certain countries that comes with a VERY steep deposit. It was so unethical the what they charged and how they made it so you had to pay them an additional $400-500 for their insurance if you could not pay the deposit. They stated it was REQUIRED to have insurance before they would release the vehicle. So in addition to the rental cost I had to pay a 5000 euro deposit (5000 is not a typo) and 95ish euros for gas that would be refunded when and if I returned it full. As I walked away from the counter the agents were laughing. It felt like I was doing a back alley deal instead of dealing with a legitimate and reputable business. Shame on you for putting on such pressure for travelers to your country (Ireland). For that main reason I cannot endorse or recommend this company at the Dublin Airport location. Other then the car sinking of smoke cover with heavy perfumed products the experience was normal. The car handled well, had the latest safety features, and keyless entry. I chose a smaller vehicle for fuel economy and am glad I did. It made travel outside of Dublin much easier. It took a couple of days to adapt to the left side driving. The return location was easy to find and the agent was pleasent and was efficient in looking over the car and once I got the all is good the shuttle bus was right there. A big THANK YOU to the shuttle driver was gracious and patient and help lift the luggage in and out and thoughtful enough to lift it onto the side walk at the terminal. For me the little things count because it shows people care and take their job serious. The customer service line they said is staffed 24/7 just rang and went to a busy signal. The email that was sent to make changes to your reservation was not helpful nor contacting kayak.com email address so I ended up paying for extra days. I did save a considerable amount booking through the site so you decide. I cannot speak to how long my 5095 ish euros "refund" will take since I just returned.

SCAM! They try and trick you with insurance! Yes, they say they accept your credit card as insurance HOWEVER you need to have a personalized policy with your name on it from your card company at the time you pick up your car. If not, you have to add their insurance, which is around double what the original cost is.

CarHire charged 1.5x the rental fee just for insurance. I was unable to use third party insurance despite what the booking inferred, and it is required, which I would always carry regardless; however, it is the fact that the booking was much more expensive than I had originally thought with no proper way to compare pricing since it occurred at pick up.
