Flights from North America to Phoenix: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from North America to Phoenix

Know to go to the US side of the airport, it can take a while and TSA can take forever.
JerryFlew with Alaska Airlines-Apr 2026
Bring your own entertainment or download a movie on your computer/tablet ahead of time.
AdrianaFlew with American Airlines-Apr 2026
Check on your flight status often, as things can change and you may not be notified promptly
LoriFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
If you have a rollerboard, at least 50% of the time it won't fit in the overhead (regional jet) and have to be gate checked. I travel with a half size bag if i am spending no more than 4 days away and it fits in the overhead. That saves a lot of time when you have a connection and don't have to wait for your bag.
CandiceFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2026
Expect the terminal in Monterey to be slightly cramped because it is a small airport. It is best to check in ahead of time on the airline’s app so that when you arrive, you can go straight to the kiosk and print your luggage tags to avoid waiting in line. They will call your name once your tags have printed. So much easier and convenient!
JulieFlew with British Airways-Nov 2025
Be sure to make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you are connecting through Dallas airport - there are sky trains that take a couple of minutes to get to the right terminal, and it's a large airport.
Verified travelerFlew with Frontier-Jun 2025
Wish I had known the seats were so uncomfortable. Wish I had known checked bags and carry on bags were 75 each. Wish I didn't have to wait so long in line with only one clerk working. Wish I had known we were going to have to take a bus from the gate to our airplane. Wish I had known the seat space is smaller than any other airline I have flown. I do not recommend Frontier.
KimFlew with American Airlines-May 2025
Bring something to eat especially if you are connecting flights. Biscuits do not cut it, if you get restless make sure you have something to help such as an essential oils that help calm muscles or restless legs.
GeraldFlew with American Airlines-May 2025
SJC is physically a smaller airport. The gates are closer and TSA has shorter lines, They are not subject to weather delays as much as SFO. On the other hand SFO offers more flight options, both in the number of flights each airlines flies and the number of airlines serving the airport.

Wear something warm on the plane they keep it cool
KateFlew with Frontier-Dec 2024
Pack a snack food and airport is very expensive. Bring an empty water bottle. There are lots of filling stations. Delays seem to happen frequently be flexible and kind. You’ll get to where you’re going.
BrandonFlew with American Airlines-Jan 2025
I didn’t check any bags, but Phoenix is very big so be prepared to walk that airport.
JanieFlew with SWISS-Feb 2025
I think you should prebook food or bring your own food.
Verified travelerFlew with Air Canada-Oct 2024
I wish we had know about the security check and customs. It was a long distance between gates. It all worked out fine though. I forgot to add that the overhead compartments were built poorly. At least for someone my height and head size.
DeanneFlew with Southwest-Sep 2024
It’s a big airport ask where your gate is
Verified travelerFlew with WestJet-Sep 2024
Pay for checked items and assume nothing but a small personal item can go with you. You will end up paying more for unchecked luggage that needs to be checked at last minute. I paid $150 just for luggage!! Horrible.
MelissaFlew with American Airlines-Jun 2024
Make sure you have extended time if you are connecting in Phoenix. The terminals are at least a 15/20 minute walk between each other.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jul 2024
Seattle is a busy gate. Find your gate first as connections may involve underground tram.
Verified travelerFlew with American Airlines-Jul 2024
Be prepared for long walk and aware that signage to concourse B is minimal!
Verified travelerFlew with United Airlines-Apr 2024
Use the find my gate feature on the flights phone app if available as the airport is a bit confusing
LanceFlew with American Airlines-May 2024
Bag check closes early, so if you're checking a bag, arrive early.
StephanyFlew with Frontier-Mar 2024
Don't buy anything at the airport. Many people paid 100 dollars extra cause they couldn't fit it in their luggage. Or carry on or purse or backpack.
AbdallahFlew with Air Canada-Jan 2024
consider getting premium economy or business class tickets as it will make your trip much more enjoyable p
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska Airlines-Jan 2024
If you need to keep your blood sugar up, bring your own snacks or order a meal ahead of time.
MichaelFlew with Southwest-Jan 2024
Lots of construction at Terminal 1 at Lindbergh Field. Give yourself extra time.
