Flights from North America to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from North America to the United States

JetBlue is usually my go to when it comes to flying. Overall everything they have to offer is better than the rest in pretty much every way. Sometimes they just dont have as many flight options as far as departure/arrival time flexibility. Spirit gets a bad rep but they arent the worst as cheap as they are, but you get what you pay for. No free snacks/drinks or reclining seats but on a quick flight its not as big a deal and they tend to have more 'time' options, for the price you pay with their airfare who can really complain anyway.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-DENMar 2025
Alaska Air is very efficient & on-time so allow enough time to get luggage, go thru Customs & Immigration, & long security lines. Terminals in SEA are readily accessible by trains but more signage is needed. Fortunately, Information booths are everywhere & are manned by very helpful staff.
PFlew with Spirit AirlinesFLL-MCIMar 2025
MCI in Kansas City, MO, is easy to navigate, and staff is friendly and ready to assist, if needed. I suggest that people arrive early and watch for updates. Having the app made it easy to keep up with gate changes.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit AirlinesMCO-EWRMar 2025
For budget travelers, this is a good airline. Stick to the luggage dimensions, bring a snack and a book or entertainment that does not require WiFi and you will get to you destination for a great price.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesSEA-CLEMar 2025
If you have a rental car, give yourself time to catch the shuttle to the airport. Also be aware traffic is awful and will often be standstill on the way to the airport.
John William MichaelFlew with American AirlinesLAX-SATMar 2025
Watch the departure gate. Some are distant requiring shuttle service and there is minimal to non existent food, beverage, and usual shopping at these gates. Take food with you before boarding the shuttle.
MelissaFlew with American AirlinesORD-DTWMar 2025
For this route, American Airlines is an excellent choice as there are many flight options and the gate agents at ORD seem to be very flexible.

You know, we looked into staying longer and had (of course) bought the cheapest economy option with Alaska Airlines, so changing the flight seemed to be fully not an option when I looked into it on the Alaska Airlines app. Would have loved to have *some* option to maintain some of my ticket value, pay a fee, etc.

It’s really easy. The only complaint might be the tram back to the last terminal to Tucson. It runs about once an hour and there is only one food option when you get there. Just give yourself plenty of time..

Fly out of Houston Hobby right now. All the construction going on at Houston Bush makes arrival and checkin a nightmare. Almost every flight must checkin at Terminal C regardless of what gate/terminal you actually depart out of. I missed this note on the United app and took 2 elderly people traveling with me to terminal A to checkin and had to lug them around the subway underground to get back to C and that took forever.
JordanFlew with Air CanadaYUL-LAXMar 2025
Buy ticket early. This is a very overpriced route that Air Canada monopolizes. In one day my one way ticket jumped from $325 or so to $535 USD.
BrandyiFlew with DeltaMSP-BWIJan 2025
If you’re coming from an international destination to MSP airport, choose a layover that allows at least 90 minutes. You deplane, then you go through immigration first. After that, you pick up your bags from the carousel, then you stand in a long line to go through customs. After customs, you have to drop off your bags, then stand in line to go through security. All this before you see the terminal and gates to connecting flights. Many travelers missed their connecting flights because several flights from International destinations arrived at the same time at MSP airport, and there was only one line from the baggage pickup carousel area through security. Give yourself plenty of time; a layover with less than 60 minutes is risky.
DavidFlew with JetBlueJFK-DENJan 2025
JetBlue leaves from JFK which can be a plus or minus depending on your plans in New York. Arrive early and check out the TWA hotel—with a great public lounge, bar, and food court in the restored 1960’s Eero Saarinen-designed building outside of terminal 5. The AirTran accepts OMNY tap to pay with your phone or credit card, take it to Jamaica station to transfer to the LIRR to go to Penn Station in Manhattan or check the MTA TrainTime app for schedules and tickets for other destinations.
Verified travelerFlew with Spirit AirlinesEWR-FLLJan 2025
We love flying Newark to Fort Lauderdale, and the time slots of Spirit Airlines are perfect for us. We certainly hope that Spirit doesn't stop flying under Chapter 11, but that is certainly a risk we need to consider if we are buying tickets months in advance. Also, it only really pays to fly Spirit if you are flying light - check for allowable size and weight of "personal items" that are exempt from add-on fees.
JohnFlew with Alaska AirlinesPIT-SEAJan 2025
They HOT tag your luggage if you have a connecting flight with a short layover, so any time you need to connect from Seattle on a subsequent flight just check to make sure your luggage is handled that way. While I was on board looking out the window, I saw my suitcase being loaded last - LIFO planning so that it would be unloaded first for my connection. Smooth sailing after that…. Great service!
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesEWR-SANFeb 2025
My flight was not delayed, but my family had a flight earlier in the week that was, by 5 hours. My daughter says she'll never book a late afternoon flight as they seem most likely to be delayed. I personally like the timing and usually they cost less. Also, get on the plan with fully charged devices or a non-electronic form on entertainment.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesPHX-LAXJan 2025
Southwest seems to board and unload about as smooth as any airline - carry on items seem to work as smooth as any airline I have used. Southwest also does not charge to check bags which seems to encourage people to check bags instead of bring an enormous carry on item that does not fit well in the cabin.
PaulFlew with American AirlinesDEN-PHLJan 2025
Contour airlines was great for a connection through Philadelphia. I had a tight connection and thought I might not make it, but I called and was able to talk with an actual person. They called ahead to the gate, and the plane held the door open a few minutes for me. Great service, and a very comfortable flight.
MichaelFlew with Alaska AirlinesPVR-SMFFeb 2025
Get to the airport early! It was a Saturday and the airport was very chaotic, lots of gate changes, etc. They have a VIP Lounge there you can pay for, if you have the time and inclination, it might be worth it ($90 US for 2 people), it is quiet with food and drink.
Verified travelerFlew with Hawaiian AirlinesLAX-OGGJan 2025

GradyFlew with American AirlinesPSP-DFWFeb 2025
There are options - book with delta, Alaska, jet blue, I mean even United is making efforts to be a better airline. It’s a shame in 2024 that there are certain airlines ya still just can’t fly with.

Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesGEG-PDXFeb 2025
My advise to customers is to make sure there’s at least 1 hour during layover as delays and gates can add to stressful circumstances as you rush to meet your connecting flight
FernandoFlew with American AirlinesMEX-MIAFeb 2025
American is probably your best option ok this route as the planes they use are new and the tickets are decently priced. American Airlines flies nonstop everyday between these two cities.

To petition the airlines to give passengers a ticket stamped with the time they started the queue. This will act as a proof that the passenger was on time in the airport. If a passenger's plane leave while the passenger is checked in, the airport crew rush to accuse the passenger as being late, despite the fact being that most of the times it's the airport crews slow speed in checking.

Friendly and helpful crew. Had no issues at all other than the St Thomas airport is woefully small, so allow plenty of time. Flight was pretty smooth and we arrived earlier than planned.

Friendly crew, quick boarding. We even arrived a few minutes earlier than our original flight plan. No onboard screens, but it’s a relatively short flight so it’s not really an issue.

Seats are much much more comfortable than United, which is what I usually fly

Zero updates from the pilots for 30 minutes in the tarmac

Boarding is, as it always is… horrible. Gate lice. Slow moving zones. Too many people with carry ons

We boarded but then sat there waiting on some missed connection people to get on so we sat for about 15 minutes for that. Then we sat again because the passenger manifest was wrong and they had to figure it out before we could leave. That took about another 20 minutes or so. The crew was working hard to figure it out so it’s not their fault. It ended up being a system glitch where someone was upgraded to first class while another person was also in the same seat and it just created a mess that took a little while to figure out. They literally went to every person on the plane asking their names to see who was sitting in the wrong seat. I also hate the entertainment that must be watched on your phone or tablet. Just give us setback screens. It’s so much better. Almost every Delta flight has this now and it is so nice to have them. The crew did a great job. I have no complaints from them. They were very hard working, even with the mishap and a disgruntled passenger.

Mostly the experience was good except for the flight changes made by UA which meant longer layover in DC

We were Polaris passengers and found the service poor. The food was ok but the flight attendants were not attentive and rushed the service.

Overall poor for me I paid extra for seats with leg room and my regional flights exit row seats have less leg room then the others that's money that could have been saved and on my final flight home the flights air was not operating it was unbearably hot in the cabin I will be contacting United and filing a DOT complaint

My priority checked bag was not loaded on the flight. I had to sit in baggage claim in Las Vegas for 2 1/2 hours waiting for the next flight. All baggage staff were very helpful, tracking showed it as scanned for loading. Nobody told me why it wasn't on my flight.

My flight was scheduled for about 6:05 departure. There were 11 gate changes from 4-7pm and the flight was 3 hours delayed due to operational issues. The plane taxied around the airport for about half an hour before stopping to be de-iced. It would have been nice if we were alerted of the plan to de-ice prior to the 30 minute drive around the airport. The flight attendant was friendly, which was the only redeeming thing about this flight. As a former flight attendant for United, I was extremely disappointed.

It was my first time with United Airlines and I would say it was very good experience and best of all the flights were on time. Will definitely fly with United Airlines next time.

headphone jack didnt work for the first flight and not much variety

Delays took 2hours and thirty minutes making me miss my connecting flight and make me sit in the Chicago airport for 9 hours

Had a short delay once we boarded the aircraft in Chicago, but it was fixed in no time flat then we were on our way. The pilot was able to make up the time lost and we landed 5 minute later then schedualed . Great service

Good experience but the snacks are not gluten free, so I cannot eat them.

Between Las Vegas and Dallas was okay But, once in the Dallas airport, notice, I have disability and ask for a wheelchair, they leave in a middle of nowhere, the personal in charge try to push me on a cart where I couldn't sit because was to high. Then they don't care about me, they bulling, till I start to yelling and crying, ask to everyone around, who can help me. The man in charge make a despective movements and said you are to loosing the fly. The last name in his batch started with an H, I did not have the full name. A nightmare. After all, a woman in charge was walking very slowly and asking me for a tip cause she was helping me to reach the fly. For years, AA has been the preferred airline. The personal in charge of the disabled people are discriminate me. Thank you Kayak.

Excellent! The gate agents were kind enough to rebook me on an earlier flight saving me from a 6 hour layover. Even my luggage made it despite the fact that the connection was technically too narrow. The flight itself was very comfortable, roomy, and clean. Plenty of space for my carryon items with plugs to charge my phone. After a long international flight of 14 hours, this was an excellent way to end my travels!

American Airlines Suck. AA did not deliver us to the airport we paid for to Tulum. Instead, we were flown into Cancun and had to take a shuttle to Tulum. Instead of arriving at 4 PM, we arrived at 11:30 PM - not to mention that our initial booked flight was due into Tulum at noon. The latter flight was canceled and rebooked (to the 4 PM arrival). We lost a day of vacation. Oh, I forgot that AA provided a lunch voucher for $12. Noting, the least expensive item on the menu at the airport restaurant was green beans for $9.99. The return flight from Tulum was delayed two or three times for no reason other than that it was NOT related to the weather. We arrived late for our connecting flight from DFW to STL. Luckily, the connecting flight was delayed. We hurried through Customs and ran through the airport to make our flight to STL (or we would have missed that flight).

This was an overnight flight. There was no meal service in first class, just a simple snack basket was offered along with beverages. There should have been some type of continental breakfast prior to arrival in PHL. As an Executive Platinum American Airlines Advantage member, I received no name recognition from the first class flight attendant. When disembarking at PHL, the flight attendants were more interested in their cell phones than saying "thank you" to the passengers as they disembarked.

Flight boarded from Gate 39 at OGG, the farthest gate in the terminal. There were no Hawaiian themed amenities for the flight. The first class service was mediocre at best; I received not special welcome or recognition as an executive platinum member of American Advantage program. The flight attendants were more concerned with their cell phones than saying "thank you" to the passengers as we disembarked. Fortunately, the flight arrived at LAX a few minutes early.

I was a little disappointed of not having an android charger. Only one it was for an iPhone. I've flown American in the past and had access to one.

The flight was quick and to the point. The crew just did their job w/o excessive talking and everything was just perfect.

My seat was horrible. I think it was broken in several places. Other than that, the crew was great and the plane was clean

Flight was late and missed connecting flight. They could have better accommodated, but instead did an overnight and had to arrive the next afternoon.

The reservation was cancelled after a day and a half due to family reasons. There was no flight from Newark to Orlando 03.01.2025. Very bad customer service. Never use again.

Overall good experience for the price. Thank you for making travel affordable.

Was pleasantly surprised at how large the plane was. Crew very friendly.

Most uncomfortable seating I have ever experienced. And they do not provide any beverage unless purchased. Water was 4.59 a bottle. Same for a soda. A cup of water should be free. I will never fly Spirit again.

This flight went flawlessly. I don’t like thei no adjustment seats and them charging for water… but they’re a discount airline so I guess it’s to be expected

Worst Airplane ride I ever have taken... My purchased seat was changed without my consent

Spirit airlines was extremely uncomfortable. The seats were hard.. the constant up selling (from lack of food or even water to $15 for wi fi ) was annoying. Not a recommended airlines

The seats were comfortable and not as tight as i would have expected. Would have been nice to be able to recline my seat, which was not available. Some form of free snacks and drink option would be appreciated as well, even just a water and small bag of crackers would have been better than nothing at all.

would be great to get basic water, soda at least and stop charging for carry ons

Be quiet! Why do they have to keep talking BS over the microphone?? Enough!

The flight itself was ok and the pilot was very communicative. However, our flight was delayed for almost 3 hours, the gate was changed 3 times and there was no communication as we were waiting. The flight staff was overall a little crabby...I understand as they probably had a long day but we all did.

Asked for a seat change to be w my wife at the gate they were great in sorting it out to make it happen

Everything went as planned. Crew was great. Seats were still not that comfortable.

The plane failed preflight inspection, so we sat there for 90 mins while they tried to fix it. Ultimately, everything was remedied and we made our connecting flight; instead of a 2 hour layover at the airport, we spent it waiting on the plane.

They changed the timing , first delayed by 4 hours then went back to 40 mins late, we had to run back to airport to not miss our flight. This is ridiculous

Seats were extremely uncomfortable and it was very hot on the plane.

Would be great if Frontier can Assign Seats together under one PNR

Early arrival. Great landing. Pilot updates. Too cold in plane.

Better to put road truck seat in plain it so uncomfortable can not adjustable and fill metal don’t have cushions at all it’s very hard to travel for five hours

Since they are a budget airline, I wasn’t expecting too much but they did some things well. They were on time, the plane was clean, boarding was fairly straightforward and the staff was cheerful and friendly. The only downside was comfort. The seats were fairly hard and after a 2 hour flight your rear end is not feeling so great. Maybe a little more cushion in the seats, Frontier!
