Cons: "Mechanical issues. Initially, airline tried to fly with a fuel leak, until they learned the fuel leak was not within the plane manufacturer's tolerance for safety. They then made me wait 9 hours in the airport for them to bring another plane. It appears that they delayed flying in a new plane until after they tried to fix the fuel leak for approximately 2-3 hours. At the end of this ordeal, they provided only a $50 credit for their airline and a $7 voucher to buy a coffee in the airport. I will never fly this airline again."

I had to talk to someone who I could hardly understand for over an hour to correct this issue. When I arrived for my flight it had been delayed 3 hours, then delayed 4 hours, then cancelled. Had to go back to the ticket desk where 100 other unhappy travelers had to wait for 3 ticket desk agents that were offering to reschedule my flight for the same time the following day. My confidence this airline would actually follow through with my new travel arrangements were absolutely zero. I requested a full refund and was unable to fulfill my travel plans. I would never book a flight on spirit airlines again and would go out of my way to prevent anyone I know from making the same mistake. Such a horrible excuse for an airline!!"

Cons: "The airline is overcharging! Before I left, I googled "spirit airlines baggage". I made sure that my personal bag and carry-on are within the required size. The website does not say that carry-on will be charged. At the counter, I was charged $55 for the carry-on. It is a light carry-on (I basically just had a sleeping bag). On the return flight, I protested for being charged for the carry-on because the website did not clearly say carry-on would be charged. The ladies at the desk then asked me to pay $100+ for my carry-on. $100+ is the price one would have to pay upon boarding without having paid for luggage. I ended up paying $65.00 for the carry-on because I did not pay for it at the check-in counter. I was flying to O'Hare earlier that day so there was no need for me to go outside to get the boarding pass and pay for the carry-on. Still I was asked to pay $65. With my air fare being just about $125, it is unbelievable that I had to pay $120 for a carry-on. I had heard of an NPR interview about the frugality of this airline and I am in favor of it. But it is deceiving to charge low airfiar only to get it back with charging excessively on the carry-on. If the carry-on has to be charged, they should clearly highlight it on the website so customers are alerted. In addition, it is also an unfair practice to other airlines. Had I known that I’d pay $200+ for the airfare to go on Spirit, I would have chosen a different airline. I plan to write to the Spirit and other agencies."

I explained what had happened, however the agent, who was as useless as teets on a boar, wouldn't hear of it & charged me full price. Now mind you, it cost MORE to check 2 bags going & coming than it did for my round trip ticket. In addition to this, they lost my garment bag containing my brand new suit purchased to attend the funeral; the reason for this trip. I can only hope that there is a scandal against this airline (nobody getting hurt, mind you) that closes the doors but forces them to provide the crews adequate severance packages to find work at a competitor."

This excessive fee really makes the option of flying spirit less economical, frustrating, and really obliterates any reason to fly with your airline. Additionally, I was able to purchase seating before my flight- but on my return flight they put me in a seat that I did not pay for. The flight attendant did make a correction. Your staff at the main terminals is consistently extremely slow, unfortunately. I really like the flight attendants, they are always great. However, due to the above mentioned issues I have had recurrently, I will certainly be reluctant to purchase Spirit flights in the future"

Checked luggage is more expensive with Spirit than with other airlines, and fees are almost double at the airport if you don't pay ahead of time. Carry on bags are also an extra fee; only your personal item is free. If you have orthopedic challenges and a long flight, pick a different airline - only the extra cost seats ($35 each way) recline at all. This airline was more expensive to fly than the airlines I normally fly, once I added what I consider to be basic needs. It would have been nice to have this information (especially about the seats) available when I booked on Kayak."

Make sure to eat a solid meal and hydrate beforehand, and bring a book, magazine, or laptop along to stay entertained -- because there's not much in the way of in-flight literature unless you like reading the purchase options menu over and over again!"
Cons: "I was unable to make my checked bag reservation online the night before (as recommended) because of a website error -- this cost me an extra $10 the next day. Not bank-breaking, but it was a slightly frustrating waste of time. I would recommend the airline offer the discount up until kiosk ticketing to save both parties the consequence of technical difficulties."

They were extremely slow, unmotivated, and overall unpleasant. They were rude, telling me I showed up late and that I should have showed up at the original flight time even though I had gotten an email that morning staying my flight was delayed. I'm not sure why you would show up for the original flight time when your company emails the passengers to notify everyone the flight is late."
