I would say that for international flights, be prepared for a possibly very long walk to your gate after security check. Also, there is an agricultural check for leaving the islands that you have to queue up for before you even get inside the airport. So that is another delay to prepare for. Otherwise, it’s a typical flight, just leave yourself some extra time for these added steps.

We have been flying in and out of Haneda the last few trips. We decided to go to Narita this time. I'm glad we did. It was less crowded and relatively easy to navigate for us. We were able to catch a bus to the North to Tochigi prefecture without much trouble. If you are coming from another country, You must fill out the immigration forms beforehand. There is a table set aside for that. Immigrations goes quick. They do facial recognition and finger prints and stamp your passport. Then you get your bags. Fairly seamless.

If you are connecting to a domestic flight in Japan allow at least 2-3 hours between flights. Immigration at Haneda is very slow . They are now fingerprinting and photographing all international passengers. Doesn’t help if you used the Japan website for preclearance or not, same line either way.

Make sure if you have any type of food allergies you let them know ahead of time instead of during your flight. The airline will do their best to accommodate your allergies and they take them very seriously. Economy wasn’t to bad on the way there I would recommend sitting in and exit row if you’re looking for leg room and it also helps to be close to the bathrooms.
