Came to pick up the car I'd reserved...and told no cars available
Cons: I showed up at the time of my reservation only to be told there was no car available within a 100-mile radius. When I called customer service (the guy at the desk was apologetic, but he could do nothing), the conversation was Kafkaesque. They suggested that I take a taxi to another location with a car two hours away (and two hours farther from my final destination) - as if I had all the time in the world to drive around the country making up for their mistake. (Another couple, that had reserved a car to drive to Boston, was told they could pick up a car in Boston.) They refused to guarantee me a car locally the next morning or offer any financial compensation. As if they were being extremely generous, they did offer to cancel the reservation! Luckily, another local company had a car - but I'm never using Avis again.
Pros: Easy pick up and drop off. Really appreciated the ride to the train station!
Cons: No floormats - which apparently is pretty normal for rental cars. I didn't really effect me, but with New England weather, I was worried about the snow and salt ruining the carpet. Again, I wasn't responsible for the carpet, but it had us scratching our heads as to why they would leave out floormats.
Pros: Lebanon airport, where I picked up the car, is SMALL. The Hertz representative there was exceptionally helpful, in spite of being quite busy when I arrived. The car was a Nissan Sentra; not going for luxury here, just my wife and I driving to another town to catch a flight. The car was in good working order, clean, and served us just fine.
