Pros:Manager was friendly.
Cons:On Thursday when we checked out the car, they told us at the desk to make sure the man at the gate inspected our vehicle to note any prior damage. We had noted for ourselves that there was damage on the driver's side door. The man at the gate marked this, took a look around the vehicle, and signed off our paper. Two days later we return, and the lady checking us in noticed a ding on the bumper that was obviously part of the same prior damage, but because the guy at the gate did not see it (it was waaaaaaay down low, in very dim evening light), she was saying it must be our fault and we would have to pay for it. We were livid that we were never told that marking the sheet was our responsibility (in fact we were told that this was the job of the guy at the gate), and also that anyone would be expected to see this prior damage, on the underside of the bumper, in the dim light. She told us, and I quote, "It's common sense when renting a car that all prior damage you didn't see before leaving the lot would now be your responsibility. Only an idiot would listen to the person at the front desk and have the person at the gate do a final check, instead of themselves." Yes, she called us, the customers, idiots to our face!! We asked for the manager because this woman was now insulting us directly, and that is not okay. The manager calmly explained that we did need to fill out the incident form, but that it was NOT an admission of guilt, and that he would personally check prior records to find if the previous renters were charged for the damage, so that we would not get charged. He was very friendly and reasonable, unlike the lady employee. We filled out the form and went on our way. We still don't know if we will be charged for the prior damage to the vehicle, because it is possible the inspectors missed this tiny ding on the underside of the bumper. Common sense would tell you that it's part of the same prior damage found (and documented) on the driver's side door, but it seems that Hertz just wants to charge as many people as possible for the same incident, so they can make more money. My advice to anyone using Big Island Hertz is to only do business with them during the daytime, as their lot is VERY dim at night and impossible to adequately document damage in this lighting, and then take video documentation of the state of the vehicle prior to leaving the lot, as extra documentation of all prior damage.

9.6 Wonderful
Pros:I liked the friendly and extremely efficient staff at the Kona airport location. Bill at the desk was very polite in greeting me and kept the conversation pleasant. Exactly what I needed after a day of work and rushing to the airport to catch one of the last planes of the day, if not the last. He also provided tips and directions for my stay while in the area. It was really helpful and spot on!! This is exactly the customer experience one should have when already dreading all of the up-sales and foreign charges. The fees weren't even a thought at that point! Thanks Bill!! Thanks the lot attendants and shuttle driver upon my return. It was as if they were waiting for me. Quickest turn around time ever and the most friendly staff. I can't wait til my next Hertz experience. I'm praying it goes as well as this trip did.
Cons:I didn't like the customer service by phone. The rep sounded foreign and kept giving me the number to the local desk and with every attempt I was routed back to what was evidently not the local desk. All to ask a simple question about returning the vehicle at another location other than the origin. When I finally contacted the local desk (after getting snippy with the foreign rep while expressing my frustrations with being redirected and rerouted in what felt like circles), it took next to a minute flat to answer my question. I was told by the previous foreign rep that she could not help me because I had already prepaid for my vehicle. Doesn't everyone?

8.0 Very good
Pros:Shuttle was quick and easy to get over to Hertz. Friendly shuttle driver who was helpful. Reservation was made in advance. Clerk at check-in desk was friendly and didn't try to "push" a bunch of extra services on us. She did ask if we wanted each extra though. Car was right outside the door. Car ran fine and was clean. Billing was as expected. Return check-in was extremely fast. No hassle at all! Back on the shuttle quickly and back at the airport quickly. Overall, very good!
Cons:Of course with the flight just getting in, there was a line and so we waited a bit with 2-3 people in front of us in the regular line and two people in the priority line.. Only two clerks working. But in reality, it moved fairly quickly. No navigational system in the car, so had to ask directions. Was able to use cell phone to get us to where we needed to be It rained the night we picked the car up and the windshield had a waxy film (from their car wash I think) that made it really difficult to see in the dark and the rain. Inside of windshield needed to be cleaned too.. No gas stations where we were, so we couldn't try and squeege it off.

Super long lines and the representative did not want to resolve the simple issue we had. Almost robotic answers.

Pros:I liked that Kathy at the Hertz counter was able to get me a vehicle at the airport.
Cons:Took the shuttle at the Kona Hawaii airport to the hertz rental place. The line was so slow it took an hour to get through it only to find that Kayak had made it possible while choosing a rental car when flying into the Kona Hawaii airport where the reservation was in downtown kona at some hotel. How am I supposed to know this when I'm searching for a rental I want to pick up when flying into the Kona airport. On top of this Hertz offered no shuttle to the other site but would call a cab that costed 30 dollars plus tip to get there. And you couldn't return it back to the airport. You had to take it back to the hotel rental place and pay another cab fare to get back to the airport. It appeared that 2 other travelers were stuck with the same problem and we're pissed off about it. In the end after calling the hotel Hertz place they said I may be able to change the reservation over to the airport since I had prepaid for the reservation. Kathy at the airport hertz rental was able to get me a vehicle but it was not the economy car that I booked. I ended up paying about a hundred dollars more to get a car that I was able to pick-up and bring back to the Kona airport. Thank you Kathy at Hertz. What the Hell Kayak?

6.8 Okay
Pros:Car (Mazda 3) was relatively new and well appointed, was a step above the typical economy car and got good mileage
Cons:Car was still dirty from previous owner, site was under staffed and things were not explained well (like our car was still being cleaned when got there; "stall 300" doesn't exist and means the car is being cleaned. We spent a while wandering the lot before we realized this).

5.2 Fair
Pros:Pricing was competitive with their completion. Pick up and drop off was near the airport and convenient.
Cons:They started out pushing me toward something else other than what I had reserved. I accepted a jeep, lower end Jeep, which to me was a step down from what I reserved. We drove the vehicle for one day, it was noisy, rode rough, and drank the gas. We parked it for dinner that first evening, came out it was dark, no problem. UNTIL we opened the doors and saw several dozen adult crock roaches go running into the seats, down the boot around the emergency brake handle, into the cup holders, etc. First an only time every, after renting many cars, have I ever had an issue like this one. We bought some poison traps and placed in the car. We call that evening, even though it was after closing hours, and did get someone to answer the phone. She indicated we could bring the vehicle in the next morning and exchange it for another vehicle. We got a Dodge crossover ??, again not what I had reserved. We reserved a full size four door car, like a cryhsler 200, camrey, or a Nissan Altima. We were NEVER offered a full size, four door car of any brank, even though I told her and showed her my reservation. I question using Hertz again, and would have to question using your service, Kayak, because of the firms you represent.
