The 10 best hotels in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Discover the top hotels in Niagara on the Lake, handpicked by local expert Miriam Porter.
Miriam Porter
September 25, 2024

Niagara on the Lake is known for its Victorian Era charm and pristine countryside. This delightful walkable city, with its tree-lined streets, is the perfect destination for families, couples or business trips, as there are hotels for every type of traveler. Having visited Niagara on the Lake since I was a kid, I love returning to this magical destination to enjoy a meal on an outdoor patio and search for souvenirs at one-of-a-kind shops surrounded by historic architecture. Many of the top hotels in Niagara on the Lake are located near beautiful vineyards, where you can sip on award-winning wines or relax and unwind at one of the many spas. Don’t leave town without watching a performance at the world-renowned Shaw Festival, one of my favorite attractions in town. Here are my picks for the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake.

1.

124 on Queen Hotel & Spa

Address:

124 Queen Street

Price:

$25-786/night

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion or romantic getaway, head to 124 On Queen Hotel & Spa. This award-winning gem is located in the heart of Old Town, with easy access to shops and attractions including the iconic Queen Street Clock Tower, one of my favorite landmarks in town.

Whether you choose a signature deluxe room or a one-bedroom suite, you can stay in style with modern furnishings including TVs, coffee makers and a bathroom stocked with complimentary toiletries. The villas, located in beautiful heritage buildings, come with fireplaces, kitchens and cute living rooms.

As one of the most luxurious boutique hotels in Niagara on the Lake, you’ll start to relax before even arriving at their spa. I highly recommend the Rose Quartz Restorative Body Treatment to rejuvenate your body and mind.

2.

Riverbend Inn and Vineyard

Address:

16104 Niagara River Parkway

Price:

$211-591/night

Located in the heart of Ontario’s wine country is Riverbend Inn and Vineyard, a breathtaking Georgian mansion surrounded by 17 acres of pristine vineyards and lush gardens. This is one of the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake for history buffs, who will appreciate the fact the property dates back to 1809. Arriving here truly feels like stepping back in time.

Admire the vaulted ceilings, displays of archival photographs in the hallways, a grand lobby chandelier, period-inspired furniture and old-world charm around every historic corner. With 21 elegant rooms and suites in this intimate neoclassical mansion, you can enjoy views of the vineyard or surrounding gardens from your cozy room.

Dine at Oaklands Restaurant and order the mushrooms on toast before heading out to explore the natural beauty of Niagara on the Lake.

3.

Hilton Garden Inn Niagara-on-the-Lake

Address:

500 York Road

Price:

$118-525/night

You can’t beat the location of Hilton Garden Inn Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you’re not far from the mighty falls and wine region. All 118 guestrooms include a coffee maker, mini-fridge, microwave, iron and TV, while many of the luxurious suites come with king-sized beds, whirlpool tubs and separate sitting areas. Connecting rooms are also available if you’re traveling with extended family or friends.

In addition to an indoor heated pool and fitness center, there’s an on-site restaurant, The Garden Grille & Bar, where you can enjoy a drink or meal. I recommend dining al fresco on their outdoor patio if the weather’s good. If you love shopping for bargains and treasures like I do, head to the nearby Outlet Collection mall.

4.

Best Western Colonel Butler Inn

Address:

278 Mary Street

Price:

$115-284/night

I love the friendly and inviting red-brick building of this Best Western Colonel Butler Inn. The hotel is conveniently located in the historic Old Town district near premium wineries, the beaches of Lake Ontario, boutique shopping and Queen’s Royal Park. After spending a night here, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake.

The newly renovated accommodations are perfect for families, group getaways or business trips. For more space, choose one of the junior suites, which come with mini-fridges, fireplaces and jetted tubs. I also particularly appreciate the fact the continental breakfast buffet is complimentary.

Make sure you save some time to visit Butler’s Barracks National Historic Site during your stay, an old military complex of five wooden buildings located just a short walk away.

5.

Queens Landing

Address:

155 Byron Street

Price:

$182-449/night

If you dream of staying in a luxurious mansion on the water, look no further than Queen’s Landing, one of the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake. The tranquil setting and sophistication of the Georgian manor sets the mood for a romantic getaway.

The 142 elegant rooms and suites all feature vibrant decor, plush bedding, mini-fridges and Nespresso machines. For more space, go for the lower cottage guestrooms, which have a separate living area and hot tub. They’re also dog-friendly, if you’re traveling with your furry friend.

This vintage hotel has multiple dining options, from fine dining with views of the Niagara River to casual dining in the lounge with craft beer and regional wine. My tip for an exclusive guest-only opportunity is to hop onto the hotel’s San Francisco-style trolley for a guided wine tour with four tasting experiences at select Niagara wineries.

6.

$93-421/night

A bonus to staying here is the hotel’s state-of-the-art fitness center, a business center with six meeting rooms and a heated indoor pool where you can swim at your leisure—so don’t forget to pack your bathing suit.

Known to have hosted dignitaries and celebrities, White Oaks is adjacent to several wineries, the Old Town, golf courses and the Shaw Festival theater. Inspired by the works of George Bernard Shaw, be sure to catch a lively theatrical performance during your stay.

One of the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake, guests can lounge in the outdoor hot springs or heated pool, take a yoga class or enjoy the cedar sauna.

When not at the poolside patio, grab a bite at the hotel’s on-site restaurant or a drink at the wine bar lounge. Country elegance extends to the luxurious guestrooms, which feature Nespresso machines, cozy bathrobes and premium bedding.

For a unique experience, do not miss the hotel’s mixology class, where I learnt how to create a classic cocktail. Or for something a little more zen, try out a walking garden meditation class.

9.

Canterbury Inn

Address:

170 Mary Street

$122-211/night

Canterbury Inn is an intimate, affordable hotel with just ten cozy guestrooms. Some of the best rooms here come with fireplaces, patios and convenient pull-out sofas—ideal if you’re traveling with family or friends. When not out exploring, I suggest playing a game of pool in the hotel’s billiard room near the lobby and chatting with fellow travelers. There’s also a library and dining area where you can enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast.

One of my favorite things about the Canterbury Inn is the fact it has its own serene, private garden, with flowers, a waterfall and large chairs to relax in with a glass of local wine, making this one of the best hotels in Niagara on the Lake for nature lovers. For a fun way to explore the town, rent a bike from Zoom Bike Rentals, located just around the corner.

10.

6 Picton Street

$206-475/night

Experience the ultimate royal treatment at Prince of Wales, not far from the majestic shores of Lake Ontario. This Victorian Era hotel is full of charm, with historic architectural details throughout its five buildings.

From traditional afternoon tea to romantic fine dining, this fancy hotel in Niagara on the Lake is the best place to enjoy upscale restaurants and sophisticated lounges serving craft cocktails.

Save some time to indulge in luxurious treatments at the Secret Garden Spa—I recommend the spa's day pass. And if you are a book lover, like me, don’t miss the Old Niagara Bookshop, a timeless classic just a few minutes away.
