Flights from California to Asia: the best tips from KAYAK users

Passports are everything when traveling in China beginning with your flight! Keep it handy for every transition! Also the flight boards in the airports don’t always show every flight. If you don’t know Mandarin, practice a few phrases or questions such as to ask about your flight gate, or have a translator app ready. There aren’t many English speaking employees at airports or airlines. Also, unless they are under 30 years old, most Chinese folks know traditional Mandarin not the new simplified. Also many general workers are likely of a regional dialect so if you need help look for someone that appears younger and in a customer facing role like a gate agent. The translator apps are pretty good but limited. Give yourself a lot more time to get around than you think you need. Most importantly, everyone was super nice and helpful.

Food is so so. Take your favorite snacks. Download your favorite movies and shows. Everything else is standard of any international flight you’d expect. Pretty straightforward.

Haneda is closer to the city center, so fly there if you can. Zipair has by far the best rates, but try to book early and pick a seat so you’re not stuck in a middle seat.

If you are connecting to a domestic flight in Japan allow at least 2-3 hours between flights. Immigration at Haneda is very slow . They are now fingerprinting and photographing all international passengers. Doesn’t help if you used the Japan website for preclearance or not, same line either way.

If you can fly JAL direct from San Diego to Tokyo, I would do it. The time you save with no layover or dealing with an unfamiliar airport more than makes up the difference in price. Once you fly direct, you'll understand!

Although the flight is listed as 17 1/2 hours, actual flight time was only 16 1/2. Bring a sleep mask to ensure you rest during your flight - it helps reduce so e of the flight time and helps you arrive more refreshed.
Verified travelerFlew with Air IndiaSFO-DELDec 2023
If you have connecting flights in India plan well because the domestic transfers with only 2 hour layover was cutting too close and domestic transfer experience is not very well managed at Delhi.

The Singapore Changi airport if huge. After getting of the aircraft, the walk to immigration control was long. Once you get to the control area, the process was quick and easy.
