4.4 Mediocre
Cons:Alamo advertised a car price of $16/day for an Economy SUV in Liberia, Costa Rica. Upon arrival, I was told that the MANDATORY insurance was an ADDITIONAL $30 / day! I was somewhat prepared for this, and had brought proof of insurance from my credit card company, confirming coverage in CR. Despite that, it was insufficient for the insurance that they said was LAW in CR. The reality is that they make up charges for the insurance, and add on whatever they think they can get from you. EVERY customer in a LONG line had to argue about the insurance. It was ridiculously overpriced, and a very underhanded way of jacking up huge margins. I returned the car after a couple of days, and rented from another company, who DID NOT require the insurance that was supposedly required by law, at a much more reasonable price. I am sure this was only typical of the Costa RIca branch. But I will NEVER rent from Alamo again.

10.0 Wonderful
Pros:All of it
Cons:None
A
4.0 Mediocre
Pros:The process was fairly easy
Cons:No indication that I would be charged an airport, environmental, and license plate fee. The insurance was also misleading, as it did not cover me in a foreign country

4.4 Mediocre
Cons:Online price was something like $150 for 4 days. Was told once I got to the pickup area, the "required insurance" + other "fees" increased that price to $400. This is total extortion since I was in another country and had no choice but to pay it. Awful experience there -- I honestly wouldn't have even thought twice about it if that had been the price since the beginning but the nature of misaligning my expectations was just completely terrible

2.8 Poor
Cons:No information was provided when I made the car rental reservation about the $200-300 MANDATORY car insurance fee. When reserving the car, I was forwarded to a private company who offered car insurance, then found out after arrival that none of the car rental companies would accept any outside insurance, so we had to pay the ridiculous Costa Rican car insurance which amounted to over 200% of the cost of the car rental itself. Not a good way to start the vacation. Also, the Alamo rental is NOT onsite at the airport, as billed, but required a shuttle ride off the airport property.

3.6 Poor
Pros:Shuttle driver was prompt and courteous.
Cons:This rental location is advertised as "on airport" but it is not. You must take a shuttle to the rental location. It is close, but still, that is not on-airport. Once there we stood in line for at least 30 minutes. Upon reaching the counter we were told that there were no more 4-wheel drive vehicles, despite our reservation. Nothing could be done so we took the best they had, which was a little Toyota Yaris. While that might be a perfectly fine vehicle for normal roads, it is ill-suited for the roads you will encounter in Costa Rica. Despite the agent assuring us the road was paved, we found out soon enough that was not the case. The final icing on the cake was that Alamo charged us almost 50% more than what was quoted. And that was for a 2-wheel drive car multiple levels below what we reserved. Terrible experience. Strongly recommend you avoid Alamo in Costa Rica.
A
7.2 Good
Pros:Quick problem resolution after minor off road excursion
Cons:Booked a Jeep Wrangler; got a Daihatsu Terios. Claimed it was mistaken advertising by PriceLine/Kayak/Expedia or other online broker. Car was acceptable but much less than expected. Collision insurance covered by the credit card but felt pressured to accept liability coverage which almost doubled the cost of the rental. In the press of the moment, there was no way to quickly contact our personal carrier at home to see if we were covered. This may have been caused by caused by language difficulties (mine) and this old geezers inherent distrust of cheerful, fast talking millennials.
A
2.0 Poor
Cons:The agent insisted we did not have appropriate insurance despite the fact that we provided all the required documentation. No other are were available and we were charged 400 dollars unnecessarily. Will never use Alamo again.
T
2.0 Poor
Cons:Price was not what we were told and they were rude.
A
6.8 Okay
Cons:We paid for full coverage insurance online prior to arrival in Costa Rica with Alliance insurance which was offered together online , only to find out when we arrived that Alamo doesn't accept Alliance Insurance so we had to purchase insurance through Alamo which was very expensive., and had to cancel the Alliance insurance. Also they didn't have the full size car we reserved. They also don't answer the Phone in Liberia Costa Rica, or if they do they hang up the second you start talking to them. Called several times and this happened repeatedly.
