Flights from Southeast Asia to California: the best tips from KAYAK users

Pack a hoodie and wear pants. Don't purchase anything past initial security check- youll have to empty any drink- even a sealed cola can- before getting through a secondary screening at your gate.
DavidFlew with Philippine AirlinesMNL-LAXMay 2025
Airport departure is a zoo. You have to show documents of travel just to gain entry. Confusing inside but staff very helpful in getting you lined up where you need to be. Immigration and security screening typical however when you arrive at departure gate you are not allowed to bring any drinks into the gate area and it is a long dry period until first service onboard. You can leave the gate area but must go through secondary screening again to return to the gate waiting area.

Check your all or most of your luggage if you can. Take a small light carry for your must have items with you such as snacks, book and electronics on hand accessible during the flight.

Bring a sweater, a mask and wear socks. Although they provided a blanket, it’s very chilly on a long flight. I caught a nasty cold from the flight and wasn’t masked up. Other than that our flight was great and comfortable.

If you are flying with an elderly parent that needs to be near restroom, have an agent place you in the back. They will take care of you.

Greetings when you arrive on the plane and good bye when you leave. Very attentive flight attendants.

Serve me a meal, I fell asleep during the flight. So they passed me twice.

Seats are not table comfortable. Crew members are pretty good. Can be much better!!

Very pleasant overall, although the movie selection could have been better.

Very pleasant experience overall, while the main course of the meal could have been better and the movies could have been more recent and with more variety.

I usually have ear problems when planes land. But the landing was so smooth I didn’t even notice it landing! The service was excellent!

the aircraft was fine and new. The crews can have better training. Their operations are not as smooth as EVA's. They are VERY stingy with drinking water. Throughout the entire flight, no one offered me any water and snacks. I still prefer EVA after trying out Starlux initially with lots of excitement and expectations.

Everything was smooth and professional. They could improve the raw vegan meal with fresher offerings, but otherwise they are now my favorite way to fly to Asia.

Leg space is small. Need more room for long flight.

I have never heard of EVA air before but I am so happy my wife and I were able to flight on their planes twice. Everything on these flights just felt better than their competitors. As someone with longer legs any bit of extra leg spaces is appreciated. The different options for food and drinks were also a plus. They were extra careful to make sure my wife's eating restrictions were taken care for. They had a before take off and landing announcements on the built in tablets for each seat and it gave out information that was very helpful. Such as what and how to declare your items in the specific country you landed in, any odd items that may be illegal to bring it (and even the reasoning why) and any other information you might need to make your post flight experience better. Oh and the seats were more comfortable, had more ability to lean and the headrest was much better for flight sleeping. The only downside was there were "forced" ads on the tablet at take off for maybe 5-10 minutes but honestly, this flight was the cheapest option and had all the benefits listed above that is such an easy trade off. Im keeping an eye out for EVA air going forward.

Aircraft was late getting to the gate - probably due to weather. We left the gate one hour late and had to wait another hour since we lost our slot in the takeoff queue. Our box was very wet and was falling apart when we got to Clark. It appears that luggage was exposed to weather in TPE while waiting to be loaded. Crew, however, handled the delay well and was able to provide planned service.

Sub sandwhich for a snack through mid flight and giving a bottle water was a good idea

Everything is good staff is polite and helpful flights are on time sub sandwhich for a snack was good with a bottle of water only thing maybe more variety of food like breakfast or dinner depends on the time

The flight attendants should be nicer, on my first flight I told them I’d prefer a veggie meal sometimes and then she began to lecture me about it, it was a late flight and I wanted an easy digestion meal so that I can sleep quickly. The meals were abit odd, breakfast on my last flight had eggs, oatmeal and fish, did not taste good at all, strange combination. The economy seats are very tight and crowded, not comfortable at all. Overall for the price I paid I thought I was going to get more.

seats are pitched well. you don't feel too tight.

For the price, it was better than other airlines; quality of food and service was very good.

Check in process in Manila was so slow. From the time we got in line to reaching the counter we could have arrived at Taipei even if the flight was delayed for half hour.

Very smooth flight. Superb crew, great food and service. Slept most of the way. Excellent airline.

They need to improve on how the plane lands cause it was not smooth at all.

I did not like how the plane landed. It was not smooth.

Been flying with China Airline over years many times. Good experience with them, no issues.

China Airlines crews are very excellent doing their job. Very friendly and hardworking. I will always choose China Airlines over and over. Thank you all for making my flight comfortable. God bless to all the staff. :)

Staff was so nice and very helpful with directions aswell!

Most relaxing long distance flight I have been on. And I have flown on many.

It was our first time flying with China Airlines and had a very nice experience. The airline staff & crews both on the ground and air were very nice. Food on the plane was very good. Will recommend it to family and friends.

I don’t think I’ll be flying them again. Tight seats, no flowing air or air nozzles that you can turn air on you, for those who could have motion sickness this would be your worst nightmare. The pilot was great and experienced (which is what you want when flying 12 hours) overall I’m thankful knowledgeable pilots!

Very routh cabin crew food is only 2 meals for 13 hours fry with them They should get better training how to service good super routh language and talking with customer

I would like to commend the staff from this flight. They all looked happy and I can tell they love what they are doing and constantly smiling while serving the passengers. Special mention to the guy FA in our section. I did not get his name but he is so far the best F.A I have ever encountered!

As before, my only problem was not being able to download my boarding passes prior to arrival at the airport. Everything else was perfect.

They ran out of food and were offering random food to passengers.

The food and service was great. You have to pay a lot for in flight Internet though which is lame.

Flight was delayed at the last minute for six hours. Instead of delaying it to a normal hour, they moved it to 10 pm to essentially make it a redeye. There was no compensation or benefit offered for this inconvenience. Once on the plane, Inpaid for WiFi twice with both times it not working because of a “weak WiFi signal”, according to the flight attendants. They also chose the farther possible gates in both airports from the entrance/exit, even though they were one of the few active flights left so late in the evening. Overall it was pretty horrible.

I had high expectations but met with a below average experience. I hope the Airline will take a notice and improve.

Special request meals are really below average. Vegetarian options are very limited if you didn't prebook.

I've stomach problems after 2 hours of flight, Iris, the flight purser not only did her best to make me feel comfortable, she went above and beyond providing pain relievers medicines and ointment. She look and found a doctor passenger on the flight to provide advise. She even report on ground staffs about my condition and provide wheelchair upon arrival. Kudos to her and Cathay Pacific!

I have a Peanut Allergy and the Steward staff were very accommodating in ensuring my safety as my allergy is life threatening. Very professional and so vested in their profession.

Everything was fine and I have no complaints or things to note.

The flight was delayed for 30 mins. The overall experience was good.

Theairline, both at the terminal and during the entirety of the flight were kept at uncomfortably cold temps. Maybe between 55 and 60 f. Those who had traveled with the airline before donned puffer jackets, wool hats and pulled blankets from their carry-on bags. The seat back entertainment also failed on my trip, leaving me for 12 hrs. With nothing. Seats offered enough room (barely) for a 6'1" frame, but it was pretty tight But the worst offender was the uncomfortable temp..

Purchased exit row window seat for extra leg room and sleep. Worth the price. Attendants maintained restrooms regularly. No snacks/chips/nuts/cookies beyond what was served with meals.

Terrible check in and food was like from fast food

Delayed, from morning flight, they moved to evening. And said, their earlier flight is already full but we can upgrade the seat

Manila airport is a dump. Very dirty and not comfortable at all

I thought the meals and meal choices were excellent. The cabin staff was helpful and as is the norm for Pinays, extraordinarily empathetic.

Not so good, my business seat is not working properly

Well it's strange everytime going the flight is late coming back the service is superior

Going to Dumaguette 4 times in a row I was late it's terrible

love the flight but the chairs are not comfortable mostly for smaller people
