I looked up the insurance policies prior to arriving in Costa Rica after receiving e-mails from AVIS stating that there are optional insurances and upgrades available. I'm covered with all the requirements of Costa Rica through my insurance, plus have additional coverage with my credit card and above and beyond that we have an umbrella insurance policy that covers far beyond any liability waiver that they provide. At the counter they required me to purchase their insurance for $38.99 a day!! I showed them my proof of insurance and then they told me they needed a personal letter from my insurance company to them (not AVIS, but to their office in Liberia). While in line there were two other couples contacting their insurance companies struggling to get a letter faxed to their office. Apparently a digital copy or e-mail wouldn't work either. It is off-airport and once they have you there they make it very inconvenient to leave you there without a car. Additionally they placed a $2,000 hold on my credit card (usually made for those who decline insurance) so that shouldn't have been necessary since I was made to purchase theirs. I later found out that the agents behind the counter are incentivized by commission to sell the insurance and upgrades. The car was suppose to be given to me full - it was 1/2 tank, the front tires were bald, I had to stop and put air in the rear tire. For this reason I will never rent with AVIS again.Reviewed Apr 10 2023

The Avis in Liberia sent us off the lot with an old, dilapidated tire that came apart in pieces as we were driving. The office did not pick up the phone or respond to us when we called in with the problem, but thankfully we were able to get in touch with the insurance provider who sent someone to change the tire. He was shocked at how old and rundown the tire was compared to the three others on the vehicle and told us we were very lucky it didn’t cause an accident. When I returned to Liberia and was finally able to connect to the Avis service people in person, they told me it was my fault for driving the car off the lot and charged me $280 for the tire. I have a report filed to try and resolve this, but this was one of the worst car rentals AND customer experiences I have ever had.Reviewed Mar 30 2023

Probably the worst condition rental car ever. Rusted, bad tires, high mileage. Yet expensive.Reviewed Mar 26 2023

Price ended up being 3x what was quoted on your website. Had to pay over $40 a day for insurance. $12.50 a day for a phone that did not work. Also charged $100 for a 1/4 tank of gas. The staff was rude on pickup and drop off. I will never use Avis again. Very disappointed.Reviewed Mar 19 2023

Know that in Costa Rica there are mandatory insurance fees. In March of 2023 there are two: one is 15.99 a day and the other 29.99 a day. Our credit card offers primary insurance so we printed up a letter from them and brought it with us. This canceled out the 29.99 a day insurance but the 15.99 is required no matter what. These are not included in the quote you receive.Reviewed Mar 13 2023

When we first rented the vehicle, we were told we had to purchase extra insurance so we took the highest coverage possible as the attendant told us that we would be covered for everything, When we went out to get the car, we noticed that the tire pressure light was on so we pointed it out to the attendant. He took the car to the back and he told us he filled the tire but not to worry about the light, because the light did not go off. We checked the rear tires which were worn but ok to drive on, and we checked the front driver side tire and it was brand new so we assumed that both front tires had been changed. We drove to our rental property in LaFortuna and drove around the area for a couple of days. We then noticed that there was a wobble in the wheel so when we checked it out we saw that the tire on the front passenger side was totally worn out and had threads showing - this is the one tire that we did not check when we picked up the car. We drove to the AVIS office in LaFortuna and he strongly suggested that we change the tire as it was dangerous to continue driving on the tire as it was. However, he did not have one in the office. So we put the spare tire on the car. We returned the next day and he told us he was unable to get a new tire for us but he could get us a different rental vehicle. We returned the following day to exchange our vehicle - the new vehicle was not 4 wheel drive and it was smaller than our original vehicle but we agreed to swap it. They did not offer to charge us less because we were getting less of a vehicle but they told us they would be charging us for the tire. So we had to pay a higher price for less of a vehicle plus the cost of a new tire even though the tire was in that shape when we originally drove away with the car. They accused us of overturning the wheel on the front passenger side. One of the men in our party is a mechanic and he asked them to explain how it is possible to spin only one tire on an AWD, they just kept repeating that we had to pay for the tire. We have been trying to talk to someone who can explain why the tire is not covered by our insurance and why we had to pay for it, but no one can answer us. So disappointing.Reviewed Mar 7 2023

We had a not-so-great experience recently with Avis. I booked a specific car literally MONTHS in advance - probably around 4 months in advance. I asked for a SUV and wrote the specific day/time we would be arriving. We arrived right on time. The only good aspect of this experience was Oscar, the gentleman who helped us. He was friendly and professional. Even though we arrived on schedule, they didn’t have the car we had requested. Instead of an SUV, they only had 2 options. A compact car or a truck that was a manual transmission, so I wasn’t able to drive it. Oscar said we could just wait around and hope that someone comes to return a car - but even then he couldn’t guarantee the car we wanted, and he didn’t even know if anyone would come at all to return a car. We had 2 small children who were tired and hungry, so had no choice but to get the compact car. And with the roads of Costa Rica, this turned out to be extremely uncomfortable. Altogether, this was an extremely disappointing experience.Reviewed Mar 3 2023
