The drop off was fine in Detroit. The shuttle from the airport to the Budget office was greatly delayed so there were many of us waiting for quite a long time. The pick up was the worst experience ever for renting a car. There were over 50 people in line and the line continued outside in the rain and cold. I was more in the front of the line, which took an hour to get service. The employees were doing their best but the problem was there were no cars. They had to wait until a car came in, got cleaned before it was ready. I didn't get the car that I had reserved but got another car of higher value for the same price. I was saying yes to the option because the wait was cutting into my trip. I can only imagine the others with families having to wait and wait. The car rental experience at Detroit Metro Airport is notoriously horrible. It has been that way for years. Rental a car at Detroit Metro Airport is like stepping back in time to the early 1990's and entangling oneself with every weakness and setback that we have forgotten or left behind for the past 30+ years. Long lines, antiquated technology, no on line check-in, impetuous staff and high rates and fees. I almost forgot waiting outside in the freezing cold for several minutes as slow-moving buses lumber across an abandoned parking lot with dim lights. There was only one woman checking customers in. She took at least 10 minutes or more for each reservation. No energy. Computer that looked like it was from the 1980’s.. Dinghy check in building that sits way in the back corner of a dirty property. My car was difficult to find in the parking lot since Avis cars are opposite the Budget cars. Stupid numbering system. I will never rent from Kayak or Budget or Avis again!! Nothing but Negative experience!Reviewed Oct 18 2026

Drove from Detroit to Phoenix. 1 hour 45 minutes to get car at pick up. One person working counter. Forced to pay for upgrade because reserved car (or like) was not available. Car drove fine until 50 miles east of El Paso. Oil life left at 5% message came on. Middle of nowhere. No cell service. 90 degrees. No shade. Stressed about not making it to El Paso. Did make it and drove immediately to the first budget place (small one) rep there said oil change not needed to another 5k miles. Apparently, it was nit reset upon previous oil change. Unacceptable. We were thrilled to find a car available to drive from Detroit to Chicago late Sunday evening when our flight was cancelled. The employee at the rental counter was friendly and professional despite it being the middle of the night and us being frazzled. Over 30 people on line when we got to the Detroit airport check in and online check in was not working. More than 25 folks in the Avis line in the same building. Over an hour wait and some folks leaving as we got there said near 2 hours. Lines were not labeled either so my wife waited on one and I another till we figured out which was budget and which was Avis, .then when we get outside to row K there were no cars and we had to wait.
