Greer car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Greer
MelissaJul 2026
GSP airport if local to Greenville is not the place to pick up a rental car unless you understand the garage parking. AND you cannot pick up anyone in the front of the rental facility even if they are disabled :(.
TabithaJul 2025
Small SUV or full size would be best to tackle the mountainous terrain. Definitely fill up the car yourself prior to returning as street gas prices are far cheaper in this area than buying fuel from the rental company.
Verified travelerOct 2023
The Greenville area is beautiful so have fun. There is not a gas station conveniently close to GSP so try to gas a little way out.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Counters were crammed but workers were efficient.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Greer

  • Greer car rentals provide flexibility and ease of movement within and outside the city. With a rental car in Greer, you can easily access attractions like Lake Robinson which offers activities like fishing, boating, and picnicking. It's located 7.3 miles (14 minutes) by car. Lake Cunningham is 4.1 miles, a 10-minute drive away. You can also visit the BMW manufacturing plant to enjoy historic BMW automobiles. • Greenville Spartanburg International airport (GSP), a major airport is 5 miles away from Greer City by car. Several car rental agencies are stationed within the airport terminal, including Enterprise, Budget, Alamo, Hertz, and Ace. You’ll take a short walk to the car lot. These agencies provide a wide fleet of vehicles you can select from during renting.
  • Drivers in Greer should beware of young cyclists riding to schools. Extra vigilance is required while driving in residential neighborhoods and school zones. Driving rental cars in Greer can be a hassle for visitors, especially when they have to pull out onto roads or switch lanes. Keep an eye out for distracted or aggressive drivers and keep a safe distance from vehicles around you. Regardless, you should expect to have an easy time on the road since the roads in Greer city are in good condition and traffic police officers are available to ensure order.
  • Like any other city, Greer experiences some congestion on local roads, highways, and interstates during rush hour between 6-9 am and 5 pm. Main roads like SC Highways 101, 290, 292, and Interstates 85 and 26 are notorious for traffic. People considering car rental in Greer should be patient as traffic is moderate and is usually due to stops at red lights and small roads. Alternatively, you can get on the road outside rush hours to avoid getting caught up in the congestion. Acquire GPS navigation for car rentals in Greer to help you find back routes during rush hours.

Line too long on the return of the rental. Only one CSR was working for a line of around 20 people. It took about 30” before another CSR was added. Still not enough to process the line in a timely manner.

Just my opinion That you should be made more clear, it was their choice of vehicle. I thought I was getting one car and I ended up with it entirely different car. I did receive with OK, there is nothing wrong with it but it wasn't what I originally intended to rent. I did email customer service and they explained I rented a premium vehicle and what I got is a premium be vehicle.

Everyone was friendly. The condition of the van was not great. The right rear fender(?)was not attached properly and it flapped in the wind on the interstate. They would have exchanged the van, but we were not close to an airport when this happened. We taped it together.

Vehicle was not ready when we arrived and staff seemed surprised that we needed the vehicle we reserved- as if there was no way to look ahead and see what was needed on the incoming reservations. We were asked to wait for one to be cleaned. A full 30-45 minutes later (really think it was closer to 45 minutes) we were told our vehicle was ready. The suburban had very clearly been smoked in, but since we didn’t have another 45 minutes to wait, we took it and bought air fresheners/ left the windows down. In clearing the car to load it, it was clear that in cleaning the vehicle, they didn’t move any seats. There was candy, tissues, random playing cards, dryer sheets, other air fresheners, and other trash under all of the seats. I had to get a bag for trash- it wasn’t a few missed items but many. It had also not been vacuumed at any time recently. I wouldn’t care as much about all of this if we didn’t wait for so long for it to be allegedly cleaned. When returning the vehicle, we were told to just leave the keys in it and they would email a receipt. Pretty normal procedure so we did. Yesterday, three full days after it was due, I got a text from budget asking if I wanted to extend my rental since I hadn’t turned it in yet. Three days?! It took three days before they noticed it was “missing”? Also- it has OnStar. They couldn’t just see it was in the rental lot? I called the number and was rerouted to the budget help line. I had to repeat the problem several times before it was understood. Then I had to recite where we picked it up, when we picked it up, where we returned it, when we returned it, where we parked it, what kind of make/model/ color. Wouldn’t have bothered me if I hadn’t already given the rental agreement number. That had more than half of this info linked and had I not already given the return info twice. Then, after all of that, I was told it would be escalated and take 5-7 days to resolve and to wait for an email. I understand that the person at the call center had no way to resolve it, but 5-7 days to find a car that was returned- someone just didn’t log it back in? Seems crazy to me. The good news is I received an email within an hour confirming my return with my final receipt. This was our second budget experience in 6 months and I remain unimpressed.

The car was supposed to be a Toyota Corolla or similar but was a mini van. The counter person said the car had 16000 miles and was in perfect condition. The car had 19000 miles on, had obviously been in a wreck, and was not clean. I’ve never had an experience like that renting a vehicle before. It was a Hertz office not a straight up Thrifty.
