I reserved the car and got a confirmation number only to be called later to say they would not honor the reservation. No other help at all. I now hate hertz and don't trust Kayak

Excellent customer service
Pros: Although it was the end of the day and I had to wait 40 minutes to meet with a rep to pick up my car, I was more than compensated by being upgraded from an economy car to a hybrid. The staff was polite and professional and did not get frazzled with the last minute rush of customers. Returning the car was a breeze.
Cons: It was dark by the time we did our walk around. Using cell phone flashlights, it was difficult to see what became evident in the daylight. The inside of the car was not properly cleaned. A previous driver had spilt a chocolatey beverage all over the passenger seat and some other clear, thick fluid had splashed up on the dash.

Oil change light stayed on when I picked up.

Pros: Employee was patient while I waited for my credit card to be authorized-it was a new card and took a while. He waited and wasn't annoyed (although I was!).
Cons: The lack of onsite parking. I was a little nervous parking my car on the street while I used the rental.

Friendly and Helpful Staff
Pros: The man running the Malibu Hertz car rental was extremely helpful and friendly. I would recommend this location for car rental to any of my friends that happen to be in the area. Using Kayak was extremely easy and provided a vehicle for a great value!
Cons: Wish the one way charge wouldn't have been so steep!!!

Rented Chevy Express 15 Passenger van for 1 night
Pros: Van was fairly new, pickup/drop off was very easy, employees were courteous and helpful. No problems at all picking up - in fact, this was one of the easier times I've had. Price was great and booking entirely straightforward.
Cons: 2 rows of seats were covered lightly with dog hair. It was a rainy day (not their fault), but this made the van smell something fierce (we used a lint roller on the seats to do some light cleaning). Apart from that, interior was in good condition.

Cons: The car was dirty and old with 56,000 miles in it. Door locks and brakes did not function properly. I did not realize you keep cars that long.
Pros: The personnel in the Avis rental destination location were very helpful in informing us about our options when it looked like we would have to change our drop off location.

A dump, and they tried to give me a smoke saturate
Pros: The price.
Cons: I paid $13 to take an Uber down to Avis. I had a printed a "premium" vehicle, which is basically a Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300 or similar.
The representative pulled an Impala up to me. As soon as he opened the door, the strong smell of cigarettes wafted out. It was obvious they had not wet-cleaned the interior since the smoker(s) used the car. I told him the car reeks of smoke, that I would be driving a number of clients around all day, and there was no way I could take this car. He said they had no others of this type. He also tried to convince me that the car didn't smell like smoke.
He then kept trying to get me to take a compact SUV. No matter how many times I said I needed and reserved a large vehicle, he kept trying to put me in a small vehicle instead. Ultimately, I agreed to take a mini van. However, he showed me the minivan (I wanted to ensure it was free of smoke). The van was covered with a mud and dirt, and the seats were covered with salt and French fries, like the last people to use it took a trip to the mountains with unruly kids. It also smelled of fast food. He said it would take about 45 minutes to clean out.
At this point, I simply left and walked a few blocks over to Enterprise, which had several vehicles available. Unfortunately it also cost me about $140 on top of what I had expected to pay Avis. In addition, Enterprise would have picked me up, so my $13 Uber ride was also a waste.
I plan to submit the bill for the difference to Avis for putting me in this position with their incompetence and negligence.
