KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Steamboat Springs

  • Consider using car rentals in steamboat springs if you often need to go to locations outside of downtown Steamboat Springs. One of the many forms of public transportation that do not function on weekends and holidays is the Metro bus system. In certain cases, like using a particular bus route during off-peak hours, having a personal car is better than depending on public transit. There are a number of benefits to using transportation services rather than public transit. Driving oneself is preferable to walking or using public transit around Steamboat Springs if you want to explore all the area has to offer.
  • Before navigating the city in your cheap car rentals in Steamboat Springs, learn about the city's key thoroughfares. Steamboat Springs' major thoroughfare, Lincoln Avenue, is US Highway 40. It passes through the city center and connects the Ski Resort, downtown, and the Yampa River. Other major roads in Steamboat Springs include Mount Werner Road, which is the main access road to the Steamboat Ski Resort, and Routt County Road 129, which provides access to Emerald Mountain, Fish Creek Falls, and the surrounding area. Additionally, Routt County Road 33 is a thoroughfare that connects the city center to the nearby towns of Hayden and Craig. These roads provide convenient access to Steamboat Springs' many attractions, shops, and restaurants.
  • Easy car rental in Steamboat Springs can be found at Yampa Valley (HDN) Airport thanks to the presence of Alamo, Avis, Budget, and Hertz. This airport is recommended because of the easy access to car rentals in Steamboat Springs. In order to rent from any of these businesses, a valid driver's license is required. Having a valid credit card and driver's license is also required. Foreign drivers must bring both their national driver's license and an International Driver's Permit while driving a car in the USA.
  • You should exercise caution on certain roads in the town while driving your Steamboat Springs car rentals. Steamboat Springs is a picturesque mountain town located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It is known for its winding roads. One of these roads is Rabbit Ears Pass, which is a winding mountain road with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Another popular road is Storm Mountain Road, which is a steep and winding road that leads to Steamboat Ski Resort. The third dangerous road is Buffalo Pass, which is a winding and narrow road that leads to the top of the mountain. These roads are full of sharp turns and steep grades.
  • If you are an electric car enthusiast, then check out the available free EV charging stations before checking in at the cheap car rentals in Steamboat Springs. Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is a great destination for EV drivers because there are plenty of free charging stations available. The Steamboat Springs Transit Center has two EV charging stations, one of which is a Tesla High Power Wall Connector and the other is a Level 2 EV charger. Both of these charging stations are free to use. The city also has two Blink Level 2 free EV charging stations that are located at the Howelsen Ice Arena and the Yampa Valley Electric Association.
  • It is not hard to navigate Steamboat Springs using Steamboat springs car rentals since the roads are well-maintained and the locals are courteous. Since most of the city's freeways go right through densely populated areas, defensive driving is very important here. Every time a driver gets behind the wheel, they must remember how important it is to follow all applicable safety regulations. Standard best practices for drivers include maintaining a safe following distance of at least three meters between their vehicle and the one in front, signaling turns and lane changes when it is safe to do so, and keeping in their allotted lanes.
  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians in Steamboat Springs since jaywalking is rather widespread there and they may cross the street without looking both ways. During the busiest times of the day in Steamboat Springs, the flow of traffic on a number of the city's roadways may become very difficult. Congestion is at its worst in the central business district. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, namely between the hours of seven and nine in the morning and four and six in the evening, are the busiest periods of the day for travel.

Pros:

Staff at a drop-off was prompt and courteous. Staff confirmed pick-up day before by telephone.

Cons:

Rented an SUV in the mountains where it snowed and it turns out that vehicle did not have 4 wheel drive. At pick-up attendant was late arriving at the office. Vehicle was dirty.

Great experience with staff & pick-up/drop-off. Staff was very accommodating. But the VW Jetta was very pricey and poorly maintained, had sensors malfunctioning. Maybe that’s just the nature of VWs. We find Fords are typically more reliable.

2.0 Poor

Anonymous, Oct 2021

KAYAK
The car we received was not clean inside, it had stains all over the inner roof of the car. The lady at the rental desk gave us no receipt at the initial pick up. She gave us no further details regarding the drop off either. While driving we encountered a rainstorm as well as know and the windscreen wipers were absolutely pathetic the visibility on the road was so bad while using the wipers we had to stop numerous times, I was then sent to return the car to a location that had been closed ages ago and when I called customer care I was made to feel like I was at wrong. He was rude and incompetent and shouldn’t be dealing with customers. Safe to say I am not impressed at all and will definitely move to another service provider for my next rental!

2.0 Poor

KAYAK
First off, whenever I got to Hayden Airport, Colorado, there was nobody at the desk for 40 minutes. Was supposed to have a sedan with good gas mileage, they gave me a keep compass. Was uninformed that the would take $500 over the price for using a debit card, and didn’t find out until I checked my bank statement. Vehicle was not cleaned & had a McDonald’s bag with two old burger boxes & some other trash stuffed underneath the seat. White powder covering the side of the passenger seat & down on the crevice between seat. I filled the rental up on my way to drop-off, but during checkout, Hertz tried to charge me as if I brought it back with 3/8th if a tank ($87 more than a $62 rental) The only thing saving this review, is the fact that a very kind customer service rep. at the Denver Airport adjusted the charges for me, however I’m still waiting “7-10 business days” to receive my $500 refunded. I’ve used Hertz religiously during travel, but I will definitely not be using them again.

I’m only 67 years old, and assumed I was far too young to drive a Buick, but the Buick Enclave was a wonderful car; responsive, nimble, comfortable, and full of tech that I wouldn’t have expected. The agent at the Hayden Airport who checked me out and back in again a week later was a very nice person: asked about our trip, asked about the car, and just showed a general interest in our well-being.
