Tampa Airport (TPA) lies about 9 miles from downtown Tampa. If you want to move between the two locations easily and quickly, renting a car is the best thing to do. Driving yourself will get you to downtown in roughly 13min while taking public transportation can extend your travel time to about an hour. Additionally, a car rental at Tampa Airport will enable you to avoid the hassle of waiting for buses or incurring hidden taxi fees. You'll also have the freedom to work with your schedule and move about at your discretion.
If you're contemplating a car rental at Tampa Airport, note that you have the freedom to select between companies with on-terminal car rental locations and those with off-site rental counters and car lots. Generally, the agencies with locations on-site are the national chains, and they usually charge a higher price than their off-airport counterparts. For a cheaper car rental deal, consider an off-airport car rental company. Even so, you can conveniently get to the rental center through courtesy rental agency shuttles.
Once your car rental contract is over and you would like to return your Tampa Airport car rental, agencies typically require that you return the vehicle to the pick-up point. Drive on I-275 S and head over to Airport Access Road. Follow the "Rental Car Return" signs at Tampa International Airport and the specific car rental company counter, where you can then drop off your contract and car keys. The car rental return center is open 24h, and you can return the vehicle during off-hours per your rental agency's provisions.
When picking up your rental vehicle or dropping it off, you would want to avoid morning and afternoon rush hours if time is a factor. Popular I-275 exits such as the Airport Access Road exhibit morning peak hours at about 7.30-9.30 am and evening rush hour between 3.30-7.30 pm. You may find it a daunting task to pick up or drop off your vehicle during such times, and so we advise that you schedule your airport arrival time or vehicle drop-off time outside this window (if you would like to avoid traffic conditions).

I thought our rental deal was too good to be true. We booked through Kayak, But we were pleasantly surprised with the Tampa airport location. The staff were friendly and didn’t push any extras on us. The rental car was clean (Nissian Versa) the staff friendly & courteous. I would 100 % recommend them if you need a rental car in the Tampa area. Just a side note. I also look the car over before taking it off the lot, I also video the entire car inside and out for damage. And take pictures, it does take a few extra minutes but gives me piece of mind.

I would rent from Fox again but I’d be way more likely to rent from Fox if there was a way to use their car for toll roads on only the days when you’re planning to use it on those roads instead of paying for toll usage for the entire duration of the trip. Having to pay for the entire duration even though I only wanted to use tolls for one day meant that the cost was much higher and the value not really that great.

I liked that there was a representative asking questions about our rentals as we exited the building to the parking lot. She looked at our paperwork and pointed at the cars that worked for the rental. We were free to choose what we liked. Dollar Rental changed my vehicle rental from. 15 passenger van to a mini van without notification!!! I even drove 1.5 hrs to confirm I was getting a Ford Transit 15 passenger van a week prior to pick up. When I arrived on the day of rental they said I had rented a minivan! I showed the email proof of the Ford Transit. They said I could have that for $500 more!!! The finally gave me an old 12 passenger Chevy van that was very uncomfortable to travel 3,800 miles in over the holidays. Both managers blamed others for the mistakes made and were put out that I wanted what I paid for and reserved. I'll never do business with them again.

I didn't appreciate the "nickle and diming"; the final price was almost 3 times what was advertised with all the added fees and taxes etc. They should be far more transparent with the final cost to the customer. Staff are upselling to the benefit of the business and not necessarily that of the customer. I was offered a transponder but after closer inspection it would have been cheaper for me to pay for the tolls. This was very disappointing; I recommend better training and customer sensitivity workshops.

I rent from the Ace counter at TPA fairly often, and they have it down to a science. The price is amazing, i am in and out fairly quickly, and the cars are clean and in good condition. I had accidentally made two different reservations for the same dates, and when I realized they had processed the more expensive one, the desk agent helped me switch to the better priced one. And by booking with Ace directly, I earn rewards!

I tried 4 different cars because each car had an issue. Two cars reeked of smoke, one had a smashed in back fender, and the last had sand and trash all over the floor board including 11 used water and soda bottles strewn around the interior of the car. The Avis agents were accommodating in switching cars but it was a terrible experience having to walk back and forth to the counter and car each time. It took over an hour to finally get into a car. They also didn’t escalate to a manager until I asked for one when we pulled the car up to show them all of the trash. The manager was very friendly and helpful. He apologized for the trouble. The return was challenging as well. The signage was poorly done. I parked in one of the designated return spots and followed signs up 8 flights of stairs to the rooftop to find that I had been misdirected. I walked back downstairs and ultimately found the return desk on the ground floor. The agent asked me where I parked and told me I had to move the car the rooftop. I told her the signs directed me to park in the designated spots side the garage which were clearly marked as Avis return spots but she insisted I move and that the car was now late. She said the signs were wrong and need to be removed. When I expressed displeasure with the poor signage and waste of time the agent told me I could call customer service. I had to go back upstairs and drive the car all the way to the top of the garage. The process was inefficient and frustrating.

I will never rent from this company again. They get you in the fine print with their insane insurance requirements, forcing you to purchase their coverage which is 3x the cost of the rental. They are also poorly located about 20 min from the rental car terminal at the airport. When they drop you off, they do not take you to the departures terminal, so you have to take another team.

My experience was terrible. I paid for the rental car online and went to go pick it up. I go up to the lady at the front desk thinking she would help me but she proceeds to lead me to a machine to talk to. So now I’m on a video chat with a lady I can barely hear. She proceeds to tell me I can’t pick up the car because of something with my insurance. Which is fine, I understood and didn’t complain. The lady on the video chat told me she cancelled the booking. I asked the lady at the front desk if I could get a refund and she told me to contact the site I booked the car from and I would get it. So I contacted the site later on and they told me they tried to call MEXRENTACAR but they did not answer. Then they told me they wrote an email to them requesting a refund for me and that I should come back in 72 hours for an update. So that’s what I did. When I contact them a few days later, after a very long time of them trying to reach the place again, they tell me that they unfortunately can’t refund me for the rental because the whole thing with the insurance. They said it is part of their terms and conditions and “I should’ve known this when paying for the car”. However they did not make that clear or known whatsoever in the checkout process. You should not be able to allow a customer to complete a payment without CLEARLY stating ALL of the necessary information. I cannot understand why I can’t get a refund for something I never received or used. I feel like I got scammed. Not an enjoyable experience whatsoever.

Mexrental is a scam company and Kayak should not recommend them. The online price is a hoax. When I arrived at their office, after waiting 40 minutes in line, they told me that with my great full coverage insurance, I would have to pay a daily admin fee that was double the amount of the cost of the rental car that I had paid online. Specifically, my rental through Kayak was $107. The “ admin fee” that I had no choice but to pay was $211. I was in literal tears but had to pay the money and go because I didn’t have time to try to find another car. Everyone I spoke to in the office was furious. All the customers were being charged exorbitant extra fees. One lady told me she was charge an extra $125 because she was 70 years old. It’s absolutely ridiculous! I will never rent from them again and will warn others against it.

It was an absolute waste of time and money. I rented the van so my family and I could attend my best friend’s wedding in the keys I was in the wedding party. The van I rented apparently had expired tags in which I got pulled over multiple times for and was late to her event. This is extremely upsetting. When I told the manager at the rental company he stated that he has too many vehicles to keep track of. This is unacceptable. I feel that this is their job to insure that the vehicle are ready and safe for the road for their customers I am very disappointed and will be contacting customer service. The money I wasted not to mention the memories. Awful experience.

Absolutely terrible company. If I could give it zero stars, I would. I have asked for a refund and had to go with a different rental upon landing in Florida. They tried to take a $3000 deposit even though we already had external insurance. They advertise that they're in the airport which they are not, and they didn't even offer a shuttle - they told us to Uber. Upon looking at reviews, many people said that they kept and wouldn't return the deposits claiming unreal damages. They also tried to do additional toll charges and other random shady things, that they communicated through text. Also, when they asked for the $3000 deposit, and we tried to escalate it since it was completely unheard of, they didn't say anything and changed the contract back to $500 without telling us (to delete the evidence). Terrible, terrible, terrible company. Pay more and go with a reputable service.

Airport shuttle from airport: Good communication, minimal wait. They called my insurance company to make sure I was covered. I already knew I was, so that was a time waster. Our car 4dr Mercedes was clean however, it was dented in 3-4 places and had a broken headlight cover. Interior smelled like smoke. The car worked and did its job getting around. Passenger window would stick or not work going up it had to be rolled up from the driver side. When I got the car, I told them when I return I will be here around 6:30pm. We can get a shuttle back to the airport correct? I was told yes. Upon returning the car at 6:30pm we were told they were closed (closed but people were still there) and they wouldn’t drive us to the airport. He said his coworker explained they were closed at 6pm and don’t do shuttles after 6pm. Kayak and the rental company promises airport shuttles. We were not given instructions on how to drop the car off if there had been no one there. We were also told our 6:30pm arrival wouldn’t be a problem for a shuttle. The employee took us to the airport in his personal car which was spotless and kind of him. This has soured my experience with both Kayak and the AZ rental company

You video chat in a booth with an agent (seems like a third world country), hard to hear everything. I went from one rate to paying 6 times the amount in less than 24 hrs and probably 20 miles of commuting. Thank goodness I did no add one!! When returning the vehicle, you must wait for the shuttle driver to inspect the vehicle, He has just left to the airport, so had to wait for the 1 driver to return 20 minutes later. There are 2 other guys that work the desk, but they are working for about 6-8 other rental companies. The vehicle was newer, but smelled of cigarettes. Just go with a reputable company, and pay a slightly higher rate for assurance and smoother transaction. Also beware! They will put a charge on your CREDIT card that ranges from 500-1000 (refundable if criterias met) before you can get your vehicle.

Full-size SUV

The vehicle I reserved was not available, nor were any full-sized suvs. (I was parked directly in front of a Nissan Pathfinder in their inventory). The staff attempted to give me a compact suv, insisting it was full-sized. After asking for a cost adjustment, my reservation was switched to another company and I was rented a small suv. Upon returning the vehicle (hours early), I was told I had “smoked” in the vehicle based on a sensor and with no inspection to the interior of the vehicle. I do not smoke in any form and the passengers in the vehicle were elementary school-aged children (who also confirm there was no smoking in the vehicle). Given the multiple attempts to collect money from me in some way, this feels like a scam to collect fees from my deposit.

I did not get the car. This place is shady. They want $500-1000 deposits on cars. They wanted to charge me an extra $300 for the rental. Kayak should not promote this company, they are under investigation with the attorney general office in Florida. If kayak or Expedia charges me anything, I will refute the charge with my credit card company.

They charge outrageous and undisclosed deposits, insurance fees, etc. The "price" of the rental is just a teaser to get money out of you in other ways. It is borderline scam...probably over the line. Kayak shouldn't list them...and others of their ilk.

Very poor! We waited for over an hour for their shuttle to pick us up! And then we spent another hour at the counter trying to get our car. We had to cancel our plans because of that. They demanded a $1000,00(!!!!) security deposit, I had an 86 year old mother with me who was absolutely exhausted after all this trouble they put us in. They offered no apology whatsoever. They luck customer service. There were two other groups of people who went through the same thing. I hope I will get my deposit back!!! Will never rent a car from them!

Shuttle driver did extremely dangerous maneuvers nearly causing two crashes, then turned the music up to a high volume when people complained. No one was at the front desk, took 30 minutes for a clerk to show up. The vehicle was filthy and had a broken seat adjustment lever so the seat couldn't be adjusted. There were severe stains on ALL the seats and the car smelled extremely bad like a pack of wild animals had been living in it. The smell was awful and never went away. I have pictures of the stains on all the seats if you'd like to see what disgusting vehicles they're giving your customers. They charged 5x what Kayak advertised, and $30 each time I went through a toll, which there are a lot of in Florida. I tried contacting them regarding the tolls, and to extend the rental because I was desperate. They do not have a phone number they can be reached at. They want you to message them on WhatsApp or text messages. There is no way to speak to a person and it took 3-4 hours for someone to even text me back. I returned the car early and went with a reputable company which I should've done in the first place. The service with CarWiz/Colusa is so low quality it's almost comical. It's the worst service I've ever experienced anywhere and it ruined my entire vacation having to deal with them and how rude the employees were. I will absolutely never be booking through Kayak again if you associate with such low quality scam companies. This can't be called anything other than a bait and switch scam. There were other people on the shuttle who were furious about the price increase who felt scammed as well. Multiple people upon pick-up and drop-off were complaining openly about their experience, this is absolutely not a company Kayak should be associating with. You are destroying your brand.

I received email from company, said deposit for car was 250 with major CC, 500 with debit card, and as much as 2000 with FL residence. When requested insurance, stated policy, which was NOT disclosed in email, was that to use own Auto policy, deposit increased to 2000 for rental. Advertised vehicle was Toyota Corolla or similar... Recueved Mitsubishi hatchback... Was minimalist vehicle. On day of dropoff, front desk staff was ALSO shuttle driver, so under staffing for service also an issue.

If you do not arrive within 1-2 hours of your reservation time, they give your car away and don't have backups for you! EVERYONE in that arrived on my shuttle were in the same boat; they didn't have any of our vehicles; they were simply telling everyone that their reservation is cancelled, we'll receive our money back (eventually), and we just need to go elsewhere to find a car last minute, at night. IT WAS A DISASTER! Thank God one of the guys working there took pity on my group since I had my 80 year old parents with me, and managed to find another vehicle for us. It was smaller than what we rented, but at least it was a vehicle. I'm thankful to the employee who bent over backwards to find us a vehicle, but York's policy of re-renting everyone's cars if they are not there within 1-2 hours is CRAZY! Everyone else got screwed. It was an awful experience. Oh, it it took HOURS for all of that to get settled. 0/5 stars.

I had a horrible experience with Rent-a-wreck in Tampa. I waited 45mins for a shuttle - every other rental car company had multiple shuttles arrive and depart prior to the Rent-a-wreck shuttle appearing a single time. Once I was finally at the counter, they wouldn’t accept my personal auto insurance from Amica, a very reputable company. Instead they insisted I purchase their liability insurance for $60/day. They couldn’t explain why they wouldn’t accept my insurance. It felt like a bait-and-switch scam. I'm sure that the cars were fine. What wasn't fine is what looked like a misrepresentation as to where they were located (looked like it was in or adjacent to the terminal and it wasn't) it was a 10 minute bus ride away and the real fun started when you finally got to the counter; they didn't take Amex which was not in the on-line rental agreement and as I didn't have my VISA I wasn't about to let them charge a $2500 deposit to my Debit Card. Then there was a demand for proof of insurance not the normal show your insurance card they wanted to see the declarations page out of your policy. Who carries that around? The final straw was the rental agents themselves or at least the one that waited on me. Face tattoos galore and surly to say the least. Their cars were incredibly cheap but it seemed to be a huge rip off and in disgust I finally got back in the bus back to the terminal and rented a car at Thrifty for 20 times what Rent-A-Wreck was charging. The last thing was that the Rent A Wreck counter had about five names on it and the same 3-4 clerks working it. There were families crying in the parking lot because of the hassle going on inside. It was amazing. Do yourself a favor at TPA if it doesn't say located in terminal don't waste your time stick with the majors in the terminal.

I found a rental car on Kayak for a great price, but... I found a rental car on Kayak, which listed ADDCAR Rent A Car as the provider, and paid for it through Expedia. I thought I had a fantastic deal: $75.11 for nine days. On the shuttle, I noticed it was marked "Car Rental Consolidated" and listed several brands: NEXTCAR, COLUSA, CARWIZ, ADDCAR, ZOOM, AND OTOQ. I began to doubt the deal and looked up CARWIZ. It is not BBB accredited and, as of September 20, 2026, has five complaints on file with the BBB. Reviews on Trustpilot, Reddit, and Tripadvisor are also full of negative comments. I panicked at the thought of having no car for my vacation. I picked up the car on September 6, 2026, at the ADDCAR Rent A Car counter in Tampa, Florida (operated by COLUSA Rent A Car). The agent repeatedly called me "my love," which felt unprofessional. A couple waiting in the office, anxious and full of questions, kept interrupting my agent and delayed me by at least half an hour. I finally had to ask them to wait their turn because I needed to leave. The agent required me to buy prepaid toll coverage at $12.99 per day. Neither the coverage nor its terms appear in my rental contract. They were only posted on a sign in the office, which said that declining would cost $25 per day plus the actual tolls, so I had no real choice. The agent stated that the compliance department also objected to the limits of my own car insurance. Registration seemed to take forever. The car, a small Toyota Corolla, had filthy seats, and the key fob battery died almost immediately. The only good thing about it was the fuel economy. Expedia charged me $75.11 for the reservation, but ADDCAR issued me a separate invoice for $453.50 with no credit for that payment. Altogether, I was billed $528.61 for a rental I booked at $75.11, about seven times the price. I returned the car on September 15, exactly nine days after pickup, but I was billed for 10 days. The invoice also has no toll line, even though I prepaid for tolls, so I can't tell where that charge went. The charges included a $279.90 line labeled "waiver/deposit reduction" that the invoice never explained, a $57 "broker prepayment fee" that was also unexplained, $33.10 in time charges, $32.40 in sales tax, a $20 Florida surcharge, and a $15 disinfection fee, even though the seats were filthy. I won't rent from ADDCAR Rent A Car again.

The first staff member I met was both the behind-the-counter associate and the shuttle driver. He was friendly and communicative, although I discovered hidden charges and fees that were not disclosed online until I went to the location in person. Fees for using and not using their toll service/ insurance along with surprise cleaning fees. They did not originally want to honor the insurance I purchased through kayak and wanted me to purchase their coverage instead. They have yet to remove the $500 hold on my account. The vehicle was not the one I reserved online, had over 100k miles, was dirty and portions of the car, like the passenger side door handle and passenger headrests, were visibly damaged when I initially inspected the vehicle. Additionally, when returning the vehicle, they were not communicative, understaffed and rude. As I was leaving, one of the employees deliberately set off the car alarm of the vehicle I was standing next to in the parking lot. Laughing, he claimed he was trying to both locate the vehicle (even though he was walking towards it and his key had the make/model and vin number stamped on the key ring) and get me to clear the way. I was waiting for an uber because the complimentary shuttle service/ shuttle driver that was supposed to ferry passengers to the airport decided to block a portion of the on-off ramp to the rental facility and inspect a vehicle return instead for 20-30 minutes. Had I waited, I would have missed my flight.

Absolute SCAM! Their hidden fees are ridiculous - I walked away without a car as did 6 other people during the time frame I was there. Disgusted that Expedia or Kayak would associate with a business like this. Very shady … STAY AWAY!

They charged me $40 extra per day saying I didn’t have enough liability insurance. The choice was pay it right there or get back on the shuttle and right another rental place. It was 40 minute wait to get to off-site. Had to take the deal to get to my next appointment. Total ripoff.

Scam!!!!! They show a low price and then won't let you use your own insurance when you go to pick the car up. They wanted me to buy their insurance and tried to charge me $270 just for their insurance for 2 days. Waste of my time . They had the wrong address listed. It takes you to empty lot. Had to find the real location on google. Once I finally found it at a sketchy building they try and scam you. I ended up going with a big company name at the airport and had no problem using my own insurance there. Zezgo is a huge SCAM !!!!!!!! Go with a real company don't waste your time with these Scamers.

Worst experience! Can’t believe they are a company Expedia works with. Then Expedia won’t give back the money we paid to rent the car before we ever picked up the car. So, so disappointed with Zezgo and Expedia! Just wish I could say something positive about this experience!

One of those "call for us to pick you up" places. Only after calling, e-mailing and texting over a 60 minute period, we went to Alamo. No one at the airport had ever heard of Global. It's a scam.

SCAMMMMMM….horrible area, no customer service. You had to talk to an iPad. We didn’t get a car, “they gave it away”…even when we had reservation. Kayak should not allow this company to go through them. Makes me not want to trust kayak.com

They charge a low upfront cost then force you to buy insurance based on predatory terms and conditions. I’m over insured. Never had a single car rental company in 10+ years deny my person insurance but this one said it was inadequate and charged me over 3 times the original booking cost for supplemental insurance. Just go you National or Enterprise.

Kayak charged me $17 online, but didn’t include hidden fees once you get to the counter. Wish I saw these reviews for this establishment sooner. How is it that I use my full coverage insurance, but get charged a $40 waiver fee for not using theirs??!! ...not to mention the unlimited miles fee if you’re a Florida resident ( you only get 50 miles a day) The company is misleading customers. Paid an additional $94 at the counter. Will never be using them again.
