Flights from Oregon to North America: the best tips from KAYAK users

Seattle is not an easy airport to navigate. Going from RDM TO SEA is not a time saver. SEA Gates are far apart, it's crowded & not attractive. Flying into it is beautiful though. My advice - allow sufficient time (min 1 hour) for connecting flights. Love SFO for a layover if possible & flying out of LAX if international. Tucson airport was adorable & easy. Loved the artwork. PDX is a better alternative to SEA if possible; it has class.

Make sure your carry on bag meets the size limit as bin space on plane is limited. Check any bags online in advance to avoid extra charges for using agent at the airport.

It is a cute little airport with one coffee stand that gets a very long line, so be prepared if that’s something you need at o dark thirty.
CatlinFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-LAXJun 2025
New terminal at PDX is gorgeous & very easy. LAX is a horrible, stressful mess & worse than when I grew up there. Waited with confirmed reservation at Dollar rentals for 90 minutes with 3 clerks. ALLOW EXTRA TIME.
Verified travelerFlew with American AirlinesPDX-DFWMay 2025
Check out the barbecue shacks in the airport. I didn’t; regret that. They also have an in-terminal food delivery service. Maybe run by Uber Eats
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SBPApr 2025
Super easy airport, TSA is organized and efficient. Lots of food choices once at the gates. There is a piano player on a grand piano!
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-BURMay 2025
Good to get to PDX early because it is a great airport to hang out in.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-MFRApr 2025
Arrive 2 hours early, figure out the location of baggage/pass kiosks and gates, minimize all that excess carry-on stuff people seem to lug onto the plane. Also, the airline should do like some did in the old days, board in this order: 1)first class and special attention, 2) then board from the BACK OF THE PLANE TO THE FRONT OF BUSINESS/COACH. Why is this not a thing? Used to be soooo much more efficient, no one in anyone else's way.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SFOMay 2025
My mom told me prior to boarding an airplane I should empty my bladder. As I age, that advice becomes more sage.
RobertFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SFOMay 2025
That flights from Portland to S.F. with an international Eva air connect require checking in again before boarding
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesMFR-PDXDec 2024
Eat before going to the air port if you have a short flight
BrentFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-BUROct 2024
At PDX, you can go to either security checkpoint upon entering. Even if the checkpoint with the shorter line is not sided with your concourse, it's all connected & knowing this can save you 30 minutes or more in line.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-LAXOct 2024
LAX is a large airport with long walking distances to exit in terminal 6.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SLCJul 2024
Alaska, Southwest and Delta are my go-to's. Stay away from independent airlines that can cancel flights without much warning. Also, order tickets at least 2 months out for whichever airline you choose, and avoid third party agents, because they lack the protection you need if flights run into problems.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-BURJun 2024
PDX can be slow getting through TSA but the car rental return is super easy. Still might need to add a little more time than you usually would.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SANJul 2024
Definitely arrive the 2 hours before your flight or you will have no extra time before boarding. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-LAXJun 2024
Los Angeles airport has convenient entry & exit without long walks to & from the gates.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesMFR-LAXJul 2024
Medford is a small airport, so it’s easy to get in and out. Checking bags with Alaska can get pricy, so plan accordingly.
MatthewFlew with American AirlinesPDX-CLTJul 2024
Nothing special, just make sure to arrive at the gate approximately 45 minutes before boarding, there was some confusion with the number system.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-SNAJul 2024
Bring your own food and coffee. No hot bevarages available.
BobFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-BURApr 2024
We usually fly on Southwest, which allows entering and exiting the plane in both the front and the rear of the plane. I was hoping for the same options on Alaska Airlines, but discovered that they do not use that approach at Burbank. I don''t know whether this is specific to Alaska Air, or maybe specific to the fact that it is in a different terminal at Burbank than Southwest uses. Had I known ahead of time that they did not allow deplaning from the rear exit, I would not have chosen seats in the rear of the plane.
LisaFlew with Alaska AirlinesEUG-SANMay 2024
Be sure your carry on fits in the bins before getting on- big rollers are difficult to get into small Horizon Air bins
ronieFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-BZNFeb 2024
Keep carry on items to a minimum due to overcrowding overhead bins. Opt for gate checked bags or complimentary checked luggage because Alaska airlines baggage claim retrieval time is so fast

The people who find your lost bags will call you, so always label your bags! They also have separate offices. Their service is great too. Just make sure to set up transportation from San Jose when landing if you have somewhere to be. The Uber drivers and Lyft drivers are extremely bad at speaking English, and will often not even take customers who try to engage them, even if you schedule or give them cash. There are shuttles for around the Bay Area, but they can be a pain if you do not have 25$ in cash. I was a little late to San Jose. Alaska lost a free checked bag. I left it on the plane, and then I managed to leave it at the airport after barely catching a shuttle. Well, I caught a ride with two people and a Uber driver. I was going to split fares, right? Well, the Uber driver and I had so much in common and she felt so sorry for me, because I did NOT make it to SFO in time....that she offered to have me stay with her husband and her. I did not want to invade her space at all, so I had her drop me off at SFO. She didn't charge me! Nicest woman I ever met. I ended up staying overnight like she warned in SFO, because the airport doesn't have restaurants or anything that stay open overnight. I was hungry and planning to get something. I didn't get a chance to, because another airline, United, isn't as organized and doesn't care as much. They just told me I missed a flight and the next one I'd have to see if I get onto unless I bought a standby ticket. Which I did. And they told me the Gate changed 4 different times, and made me stay in line for no reason. I just sat in one place for a few hours. One good thing about San Jose is that they do have restaurants, places to sit adjacent to the restaurants, and the different gates, in a very clear layout. There are also clearly posted hours. PDX is very fancy but not very clearly marked in some ways. SFO is an open layout and the gates are clear but there are also points you can't get past. In PDX, you can also rent a car. Both places have large complexes for cars.

Always allow at least 90 minutes for connections in Dallas. Flights seem to be late often and it’s a big airport to navigate.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPDX-PHXJan 2024
If you need to keep your blood sugar up, bring your own snacks or order a meal ahead of time.

Easy boarding. SLC gate was a long way from baggage claim.

It was not apparent whether or not there was a bathroom. The snacks were sodas in a drawer which seemed a little lacking. But the customer service at my time of arrival until I got out of the tarmac was great.

Cons: "Boutique air crew is very friendly. Much nicer experience compared to bigger airlines ."

Friendly staff, everything went smoothly. Gluten free snacks would would be the cherry on top!

We have always flown with Alaska when we can. As they have great customer service. This trip we had to transfer to Air LINGUS in Denver to go to Dublin. That’s where things went bad! Our checked luggage didn’t arrive. The process to make a claim was way more complicated than it should be. It took 5 days to recover our luggage. The whole time we couldn’t talk to a real person who could tell us anything. The whole time Alaska blamed Air lingus and vis a versa. No one seemed want to help us. That was the worst part.

I'm a platinum member with American Airlines, however, my ticket did not display status and thus I did not board with an early group. I traveled with my two daughters and we were given a row of seats that did not recline. Not the treatment I would have expected for a platinum customer. The flight was also a bit late leaving Portland. Also on my flight to Portland we were not given premium seats. In fact, we were in the last row of the aircraft.

I was at risk of not getting on the flight, as when I presented my boarding pass at the gate, it showed me as not having checked in. I was sent to the desk as the last of the other passengers boarded. The agent there said he could see that I had done all of my part and allowed times recommended, but it showed me as not checked in and he couldn't figure out how to correct it. He actually asked them to hold the flight as he struggled with it. He called for support, someone corrected it, and he printed boarding passes for both flights to reduce further issues. I did get on, and needed to ask someone to exit my seat.

We had a birthday one day off and almost missed the plane Our fault

5 hour delay from Portland to Newark. Boarded and then were told we had to get off and wait five hours for flight. No food vouchers or any other compensation because they said it was an air traffic control issue. Plane is bare minimum like a discount airline. They have free entertainment but you have to get to it on your own device no screens in the seats

Alaska app and website had numerous problems so couldn’t get boarding passes or check seats

Very good. Gate personnel were excellent flight attendants were also able to change my seat at the last minute everyone, courteous, polite, and.

It was horrible. Last minute gate change, delays, more delays and then we had to wait for a stweardess to onboard. No explanation for the wait. No apologies. We got to RDM way past schedule @ 1:30 am!!!! Stressful and exhausting. We'd avoid flying Alaska ever again.

On time, smooth take off and landing, efficient boarding. Gate staff excellent, stewardess grumpy, but civil enough.

Did not know my son and I had different seating arrangements. He was fine, but it was disappointing.

Flight was canceled, and no effort was made to help with rebooking, no hotel vouchers, no car transportation and minimal food voucher and most places for food were closed by the time the voucher was given. Waited for 3 hours for bags. Simply the worst travel experience I have ever had

Food was surprisingly good but the WiFi was not great

this crew didn't care much. bumping carts into seats more times than i care to remember

Very late arrival at PWM. Late jet getting to ATL. Equipment problem with aircraft - could not get enough water onto plane., Another delay getting FAA approval for flight with bottled H2O. Not the crew’s problem.

Everything was fine except the entertainment was not working for half of the flight.

Easy boarding with an extremely kind attendant. Seats were spacious and we had 3 seats for 2 people so we could stretch out. Comfortable air flow and very attentive and hospital attendants. Bathrooms and food were the only negative. Bathrooms were so small you could hardly get in and close the door. I don’t think an obese person would fit or a person with a movement disability. Food was the trending food for flights, nonexistent. We spent $40 getting sandwich and snack at airport for our 6 hour flught.

At first, we were on the runway for about an hour, literally. The Captain did explain that the Control Tower just had a change shift (sounds like an unrealistic excuse) and then that we had to change a runway. A regular economy seat is made for 12 yo twiggy. I understand Delta wants to push for an upgrade, but after sitting in a Comfort seat and in First class. I would say First class is not worthy of my money. The landing was delayed because of the weather in NYC, I don't hold that against Delta, of course. The Captain did alert us to that upon takeoff in Vegas and again as we reached NY.

No one fussed at me about my pap machine as a 3rd pice on the plane. Boarding was pleasant and smooth. The boarding agent in Anchorage was a fun character- he could be in a movie. :~) The on-board crew were downright pleasant. No militant attitudes on Delta. Like all planes these days the seats are too narrow for standard Americans and at 5’2” there is barely enough leg room. I don’t know how tall people fold themselves into the seats. But that’s nothing specific to Delta

Great. Very smooth. Plenty of information. However, wish they would give out a menu in advance of making a dinner choice like other international airlines. The flight attendant says chicken or pasta and there are details about ingredients or spices requiring the passenger to ask which requires the flight attendant to answer many times. So easy to solve this problem. P

I was traveling with my two young children and brooked this flight as it was the best option. There were no screens for movies etc. which normally would be fine, however, when you list free in flight entertainment that should be mentioned. We don't rely on them but count on it as a worst case scenario backup for the kids to keep the peace if needed. The main issue though was the food selection. I have dietary restrictions so I was excited to preorder meals. Nothing that was offered on board or for preorder was ok for me to eat, not even the snack boxes. It was very frustrating for a 5+ hour flight. Otherwise the flight was good and went smoothly.

Usually we have a pleasant trip on HA. Not this time! All stewards were unpleasant, rude, rushed, condescending. First step onto the plane, WE greeted the crew with an “Hello!”. They greeted us with a terse smile then ignored us. Not a good start. Even over the PA announcements, they were rushed and unpleasant. One Stewart even berated a passenger in front of us when all they asked is if the purchase cart had vodka to purchase. The steward said “LIKE WE SAID OVER THE PA, THIS ONLY HAS FOOD OR BEVERAGE!” Vodka is a beverage! It was a legitimate question. Not sure why she treated the passenger this way. Taking trash was even unpleasant, No “Thank you” or at least a smile. I work in CS. I know good CS can make or break your trip. There was absolutely no “aloha” on this trip. All clearly did not want to be on this plane and felt strongly that they did not want to provide a premium service to their clients. This might be our last HA and cancellation of my HA-MC if we are treated the same way going home. We are typically treated with kindness and warmth in the past with HA. This trip was unacceptable.

Plenty of overhead compartment room. The seat choice option is horrendous as best.

Really disappointed with in flight entertainment, 6 hr flight with no built in screens

I was put in a middle seat with the people on either side of me kept passing their grandchild over me and talking back and forth while I was trying to rest or watch a movie. So inconsiderate and totally disturbing. I asked if they would sit next to each other to alleviate the constant impeding my comfort but they refused.

The flight crew were great. Very helpful and friendly. Seats comfy. Thanks

Overall it was a good flight, but the food should be looked at. No options. The seat was also uncomfortable and very tight.

Late boarding, full flight. Absolutely no food and barely a bag of pretzels. No video screens and slim pickings of movies. No live tv and poor selection of shows.

It’s great, I’ve always fly & ride with Hawaiian Airlines going Inter island or to the mainland.
