Get the most out of your time in Richmond by renting a car and exploring the city and surroundings in your own time. If you want to visit the Richmond Raceway for a car race, having a rental car means you are just 13 minutes away. Nature lovers may also want to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, about 8 miles north of Richmond and only a 12-minute drive away.
Start your time in Richmond stress-free and pick up a rental car upon landing at Richmond International Airport. This airport features its own car rental center with nine agencies providing vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Located on the lower level at the entrance of the terminal building, finding a car and being on your way to the city will only take a matter of minutes.
Especially during the Christmas season and the cold months, Richmond has an enchanting vibe because of its snowy winters. For driving, this means to prepare properly and making sure the rental car is equipped accordingly with winter tires and even snow chains. It is also very important to slow down when the streets are covered in snow, and bear in mind that lanes may be narrower due to plows piling up snow on either side.
Speeding in the state of Virginia is really not a good idea – it should be refrained from in general, but in Richmond you may even be charged with reckless driving. Familiarize yourself with speed regulations beforehand and never go faster than 70 mph, as speeders are fined severely in and around Richmond. Always pace your speed and adhere to the posted speed limit signs.
Cheap car rentals in Richmond are readily available. When you get behind the wheel of your rental car, be sure to adhere to the prevailing regulations, such as the speed limit. The city speed limit for Richmond is 25 mph, the same as the surrounding centers and other urban centers. On the other hand, the suburban speed limit is 75 mph, and the highway speed limit is 75 mph as well. Richmond strictly enforced speed limits, so don’t take chances.
If your travel plans to Richmond allow, you can book a weekly car rental for a better deal. Even if you don’t plan on staying for a whole week, consider checking the rental rates for seven days. You might be surprised that it’s less than you’d have paid for five days. And, the discounts get even better if you are staying for longer. During your stay, consider going on a road trip to Richmond. For instance, you can go to Virginia Beach, which is around 87 miles from Richmond.
Parking fees at accommodations can sneak up on you and throw you off budget with Richmond car rentals. Some hotels charge so much for overnight parking. And others don’t have a place to park at all – which can be quite the struggle. However, Richmond has several paid opportunities you can take advantage of. Something to keep in mind is that Richmond is quite a busy town, and traffic builds up during rush hours. During peak hours – usually early mornings and evenings – you want to avoid traffic hotspots in town, such as Highways 60, 65, 95, 301, and 360.

After researching the cars available at multiple locations, I selected this place specifically because of the car that they said was available, which I reserved. When I got there, they told me that car was not available but that they would put me in a smaller car for the same price. There was a car available there that was one class larger than the car I had selected but they told me that would be more expensive however they would be happy to charge me the difference. The staff was nice but I left feeling unsatisfied. I think, since it was the fault of the company that my selected car (and car class) was not available they should have offered the next class up for no additional charge. They told me this was not possible. This was definitely a missed customer service opportunity, possibly by the company and not necessarily the staff since they told me it just couldn't be done. Again the staff was very nice but I left feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.

The folks in the Richmond office were fine. However, due to a delayed flight, I had to change my car pick-up to Roanoke, which I did over the phone with Budget. The agent I spoke to did not indicate that there would be any problem with this, but when I arrived at the Roanoke Budget desk there was a sign saying “we cannot honor same-day reservations”, and they did not have a car for me. The Roanoke Budget agent was unhelpful and unsympathetic, and I was not able to reach a representative over the phone. I eventually had to rent a car from Hertz. Budget should not allow reservations to be made if they cannot be kept. I was extremely dissatisfied with this.

I had a car reserved for July 3rd. My flight was changed and budget said I didn't need to change the pick up time bc they hold the car for 24hrs. But when I arrived they had closed for the day more than 3 hours early!! and I was staying over an hour from the airport. I had to call a ride and go back and get the car the next day. They said they were out of cars and had to put me through with avis and I didn't even get the vehicle I had reserved....they only had a smaller vehicle which really effected our transportation on the trip. Needless to say not impressed.

The airport counter was quick, but then there was only one employee at the next level to give out the cars. The line was 15-20 people long and there did not actually seem to be any cars in the parking lot. People in the front of the line had been waiting a half hour to talk to the one employee. Others who had already talked to him were standing idly waiting for a car. We left without renting.

Drop off was great. Pick up always is almost always filled with bureaucracy with Richmond. Never given the exact vehicle you wanted. Smaller or way bigger than you want.

My original reservation was at RIC. The female Ms. Black wasn’t welcoming nor friendly. Ms. Black which was her first name first asked for confirmation number, license, and credit card. When I asked her to be sure I was told that’s what I wanted her to ask me! She then started, drivers license, and credit card. I pulled out the card I used to made the reservation with also handed my license. I was then informed that Dollar doesn’t rent vehicles to in state customers using a debit card (attach to bank). I politely took my things my husband wheeled me back to our car. Sad, and confused based on verbiage I read on Dollars website. Decided to take a chance to visit another location. This location was on broad street in Henrico, Va. The store was closing the manager Marie came out to see if she could help us. Since store was literally closing she asked which car would I need? I pointed to the closest car considering I’m sad because our trip is not going as planned. Maria may have seen the sadness in my eyes. She then said don’t worry I’ll have the vehicle ready as soon as they opened. She also took down my reservation number so she could make sure things went smoothly in the morning. We returned bright, and early Saturday morning, to Maria’s word everything was ready! Due to myself using my bank debit card the system required a credit check. Just a suggestion, not everyone likes to use credit cards. I am a firm believer if I don’t have it to spend I don’t buy. Especially with working for a large financial institution for the last twenty one years. This is also the company who works with organizations such as Hertz, Dollar to provide corporate discount services. Possibly if being required to leave a $500.00 deposit when using bank debit card, the option for credit check should be second suggestion or if person may be a liability. Overall Maria helped turn this negative, humiliating experience around! I am truly grateful for the level of service, and professionalism that she provided. Appreciated she was the one to take accountability for the actions even though she didn’t cause this. Her ability to resolve the situation was truly appreciated. Because of Maria showing me that I mattered, she who represents Dollar showed she truly wanted my business. Kudos once again to Maria! I pray she’s considered fior any increases available to show appreciation for all she does as an employee of Dollar. Warm Regards,

There was no one at the airport counter, and a sign for dollar that was misleading. The actual rental location was a booth in the rental garage outside in the twenty degree weather. There was only one person working the holiday weekend and the process took over an hour

Spoke to kayak rep before driving an hour to pick up the rental and he assured me I could rent it with a debit card as I was traveling and didn’t have my credit card. I got there just before close to be turned away by Alamo reps who were rude and unhelpful. I will never use kayak or Alamo again.
