KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Key West

  • Car rentals in Key West make it easy to visit nearby attractions both within and outside of the city. The scenic Bahia Honda State Park can be found just 35 miles outside of the city limits, along with many other small islands that are fun to explore, and driving is a convenient way to get to all of these. If you want to go on a day trip, you can head to Key Largo, a popular destination that’s about a 2h drive away. Key West car rentals will provide you with a lot of flexibility and independence.
  • To find Key West International Airport’s rental car center, simply head to the baggage claim area in the arrivals terminal. As the center is located inside of the airport, there is no need to take a shuttle to the location. There are several different companies for you to choose from for car rentals in Key West, with Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz being a handful of the options available.
  • Key West is filled with many small streets and cul-de-sacs, so adding a GPS to your rental car can be a convenient choice to help prevent you from getting lost. As it is a beach town that is known for having beautiful weather, there are also quite a few pedestrians and cyclists out and about, particularly in the city center and along the coast, so make sure to keep your eyes open for them when you’re behind the wheel.
  • There is one main street to get in and out of Key West, and it is known as Highway 1. During rush hour, Highway 1 often becomes congested with commuters traveling in and out of the city, so try to avoid driving between 7:30-9:30am and 4-6pm. This road also frequently has a high amount of traffic during the summer months, as this is when visitors come to Key West to soak up some sun and spend time at the beach. If you’re on a schedule or catching a flight, keep these times in mind to avoid delays.
  • Key West city, one of Florida’s island cities, is a dream destination for vacation lovers. And what better way to discover the hidden treasures of this vacationers’ haven than with your own Key West car rental service. From water sports like sailing and snorkeling to outdoor adventures, there is no shortage of things to see and do while visiting this island. Take a relaxing walk down Duval street and enjoy a cold drink while listening to a local back or head off to one of the local restaurants and experience a taste of the Caribbean culture without quite stepping out of the U.S.
  • Generally, you may not need a car if you are going to stay in Old Town. However, if you are going to stay on the eastern side of the island in New Town, then car rental will be a wonderful idea as this will help you move around with ease while saving money on high taxi prices.
  • Parking in Key West can be a daunting task, especially in the Old Town. Some of the parking options in this area include metered as well as non-metered street parking. Other parking options include the city-owned pay lots and garages as well as privately-owned pay lots and garages. The average parking fee in street-metered parking lots is $3 per hour and the parking regulations are enforced daily from 8 am to midnight. However, if you looking for free parking, then check out Old Town where you might find a handful of free parking. Just be sure to avoid those labeled “Residents Only.”
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Key West for $52 or less
  • Luxury rental cars in Key West are around 30% cheaper than other car types, on average

At our initial pickup in Key West, FL we were given a very nice Mazda. Unfortunately we later ran over a screw and could no longer keep the tire inflated. We had to change cars in Jacksonville, FL, but were not offered similar choices. The car we accepted, a Toyota, had less power, less comfort, and only one intermittent wiper speed, which was really a problem with precipitation that varied tremendously from place to place and even minute to minute. We later discovered that the Toyota had no windshield wiper fluid, that someone had wiped the inside of the windshield with a rag (so we couldn't completely clean it with fluid anyway), and it's Maintenance Needed alert came on. We decided to trade cars again in Philadelphia, PA, but were only offered a Dodge Charger which would likely have had much worse gas mileage and was too big for easy parking. But the local agency couldn't find its keys! We convinced an employee to fill our wiper fluid and elected not to change from the Toyota after all. (We also asked him to clean the inside of the windshield, but that wasn't done!) A couple of days later the Philadelphia agency called us, apparently still so dumbfounded by the missing key that they didn't even realize we hadn't taken the Dodge off their lot. Finally, even though we told the agent in Key West we wanted toll coverage, she apparently didn't set it up. The agency in Philadelphia discovered this by which time we had already gone thru several tolls. That agency allegedly corrected the matter, but we won't know for sure if that's true until all the billing is settled and we see that our tolls are all covered by our agreement. Overall all these experiences left a poor taste in our mouth.

Key West had few cars because of recent storms. A relatively valid excuse. Your staff was not at all helpful seeking alternate solutions. Eventually after about two hours we were given an adequate vehicle which still smelled of cigarette smoke. The return was easy.
