8.7 Excellent (832 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Hampton Inn and Suites Exeter is the newest hotel in the greater Exeter area. The hotel is ideally located just 6 miles off major Interstate I-95 at exit 2, which runs North and South from Boston up to Maine. It is also right off of Route 101 at Exit 11. Route 101 is the major connecting route from Manchester and the White Mountains to the seacoast of New Hampshire. The hotel is 51 miles from Boston Logan Airport and 30 miles from the Manchester/Boston Airport, which makes traveling into the state of New Hampshire very convenient. The property is a short walk to the center of the town of Exeter. The Squamscott River runs through Exeter and can be enjoyed while dining at one of many fine restaurants that look upon the river and waterfall. Exeter has many fine independent shops of boutiques. It is a short walk to Phillips Exeter Academy, where one can lounge in the expansive parks or sight see the award winning architecture. Also within walking is Swasey Park that is right next to the Squamscott River. During the spring, summer and fall seasons, a Farmer's Market brings local produce and products into town. The historical houses of Exeter could be an all day adventure - either walking or driving. The American Independence Museum is also within walking distance. The American Independence Museum Festival is an annual event in July. The Rinks of Exeter is a state of the art Ice Rink that opens to the public on a regular basis. The hotel is minutes from the Exeter Country Club for golf, driving range and putting green. The golf club is one of the 100 oldest courses in the nation. It is truly breathtaking in its views and has 18 holes now. Apple Picking is at its best just three short miles from the hotel. Applecrest Orchard is worth the trip every time in the autumn. There is something for everyone to do. The hotel is also an easy drive to New Hampshire's beautiful coast line. Just 8 miles East takes you to Hampton Beach where there's quite a bit to do for children as well as a beautiful stretch of beach. One can meander up the coast on 1A and see all the seacoast of New Hampshire. Portsmouth, NH, one of the most popular seacoast towns to be found on the eastern seaboard, is just 12 miles north and an easy drive up I-95. Portsmouth abounds with boutiques, restaurants, theater, live outside theater, Strawbery Banke, and Prescott Park. More shopping can be found just three miles away at the Kittery, Maine Outlet Malls. The Hampton Inn and Suites has both suites and rooms available. We have complimentary in-room and throughout the public spaces, HSIA, wired and/or wireless. The hotel has a salt water indoor pool and whirlpool and fitness center. The hotel has an Executive Center where computers, printing and faxing can be done. Guest also can print from guest room to a secure sight in the Executive Center. The property has one meeting room "Pennacook" which can accommodate up to 85 reception, 65 rounds and classroom. It has a lovely patio off of it so in the warmer months the attendees of a business or social function can go outside.

6.0 Good
Cons: It's a nice location but truly I didn't have time to enjoy that. Room was very tiny and I was baffled by heater in room, no controls I don't even remember seeing a thermostat. It looked like a lovely little inn but I could not give a very comprehensive review.

Pros: Great food delivered to our room! Great water pressure and warm shower. Lively bar.

Cons: Did not bother us, but the European Queen room has very tiny bathroom! Not for anyone who is large! It was clean and usable, but size might be uncomfortable for certain guests. Truly European, if you have ever stayed in old hotel there! Stay on your diet!

Pros: The room was amazing ... There was an adjacent small "dining room" that is used for meetings, it was not in use so they allowed us to use it. Breakfast buffet was great - all of the staff were fantasitc !

8.0 Excellent
Pros: small room but for one night it was comfy
Cons: The room was a little small, thought it would be bigger but it’s an inn not a hotel chain so it’s was understandable
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My husband and I grew up in Exeter and love coming home. We always try to stay at the Exeter Inn if there is a room available. Stayed over during Thanksgiving, there were no restaurants open that evening. The chef had made turkey sandwiches for those of us who had eaten earlier in the day and may have been hungry later. How thoughtful! Cindy (at front desk) could not have been nicer or more accomodating! Thank you Exeter Inn for always making us feel at home.
Cons: Can’t think of a thing that wasn’t perfect. Looking forward to our next trip home.
7.0 Good
Pros: Clean room. Comfortable bed. I arrived late and left early so no real interaction with staff.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything else was great
Cons: Everything was great except for the ridiculous cost for parking
5.0 Okay
Pros: very clean & comfortable
Cons: The parking situation was a bit of a surprise. Only on-street (have to feed a meter). The garage is $35 where valet parking is $30. All unexpected. The other surprise was to find a shirtless man already settled into our room. I confirmed our registration online and had the hotel's site pick our room for us. Used the new cellphone key entry feature and there he was in his/our room. We had been traveling most of the day and my husband wasn't feeling well due to a recent stroke. We had to then drag our belongings back downstairs to the front desk where there was only one person on staff handling other visitors and the phones. He was very apologetic and professional. Upgraded our room and free dinner (although I had to walk down to the lounge to get it which was weird). $13 bucks for a glass of wine is pretty expensive. Not sure if we'll stay again. Maybe?

Pros: Very Friendly staff and was a great location!
Cons: The traffic pattern into the hotel was confusing for entrance and exit. This was not really a big issue!
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Simple clean and affordable. Staff was super friendly and helpful.
1.0 Poor
Cons: The staff at the front desk was the rudest customer service representative I’ve ever encountered. I felt unwelcome and uncomfortable during my stay. The girl at the front desk was accusatory and rude and did not treat us like welcome guests. We were accused of smoking in the room and threatened to be kicked off the property. This was shocking as we didn’t smoke in our room. We went to the front desk to try and rectify it and asked for them to come up so that we could prove that we did not. We did not want to be kicked out or charged for something that we didn’t do. Instead we were called liars and told that because the clothes we were wearing smelled of smoke, there was no way to believe us. We begged and pleaded for them to just walk into the room and all we got in return was “it’s impossible for me to believe you didn’t. I can’t leave my desk,” or “I can smell it on you right now.” She was insulting and judgmental. She then lied about being the manager when we asked to speak with someone else. The GM was kind and reasonable after the front desk finally allowed me to speak to her. We quickly explained, she came to the room to see it didn’t smell of smoke and it was over. However this was after arguing for over thirty minutes with the accusatory girl in the front and being threatened to be kicked off the property on Valentine’s Day. We spent our Valentine’s Day upset over the way we were treated and uncomfortable walking through the hotel and it’s lobby. There are simple ways to handle misunderstandings in customer service and I was blown away by the mishandling of this one. We were looked straight in the face and threatened to be kicked off the property and charged for something we DID NOT DO. We were told straight to our faces that she didn’t believe us. When you stay at a hotel, you expect hospitality and to feel welcome. We did not experience that at all. The hotel experience and discomfort we felt with the staff put a shadow over our whole trip.
4.0 Okay
Pros: Accommodated early check in.
Cons: Hallway smelled damp like they had water damage. Funny smell in hallway and in room.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: 1. Location 2. Quiet - most hotel walls are thin. I heard nothing.
7.5 Good
Pros: Nice king size bed. Right off I95
Cons: TV cable hookup was loose so had to adjust it so that tv worked properly.
5.8 Okay
Cons: Had to wait past 3 o clock check in time for our room. Unacceptable has never happened to me ever in all of the hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Couple next to us same thing and both also aggravated. Front desk girl was rude. Our shower wouldn’t clog so i could not take a tub and also had mold in it. Didn’t get refunded.
7.0 Good
Cons: The toilet handle in my bathroom was broken so any time I flushed the toilet, I had to jiggle the handle back into a certain position otherwise it would just run perpetually.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: For once, a hotel where I can’t hear the other guests. Usually, hotel walls are thin. Not so here.
Cons: Thermostat can be tricky.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Location is great.
Cons: Room is old. Theromstat is broken. Staff is not accomodating.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: The staff was very good. A king room was selected on Kayak and we were given a queen upon arrival, which was incorrect. The woman at the front desk was great and gave us a king like we selected originally.
Cons: The hotel is very out dated and smells of smoke, so a renovation is recommended.

8.0 Excellent
Pros: Basic rooms small tv hey it’s motel 6
Cons: No car wash
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff
Cons: Bugs an smelled of cigarettes
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were cheerful, friendly, helpful and accommodating. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel was also clean and well taken care of. Outstanding would be a fitting description for both the staff, and location, easy to get on the highway and close to shopping and restaurants and other fun destinations on the Seacoast of NH.
Cons: Nothing they can do about it, the parking on the side of the building with the drive through road. You have to fight two way traffic on that road to get into a parking spot or out of it. Be careful. There is another lot behind the pool that is more safe and secure, and easier to get in and out of.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: We were cozy all night and I was happy.
Cons: I could have used an extra blanket.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean and comfortable
1.0 Poor
Pros: They take pets. Over all nothing
Cons: I made reservations and it was awful when I got there no fridge in room the TV was awkwardly set no closet. Very small room. Shower pressure was awful and the bed was like sleeping on a hard floor. Blankets in bed were so thin and the bed was next to a drafty window. No fan in bathroom so when we took showers the window in room fogged up LOL. IT WAS THE WORST MOTEL IVE EVER STAYED AT. We tried to change rooms and the woman at front desk said all rooms are the same size..
5.0 Okay
Pros: Staff were very accommodating about an early check-in and helpful regarding menus for take out/delivery options. Positive attitudes even during Covid virus and it appeared cleanliness precautions were being taken.
Cons: Room very bare bones...no shampoo, microwave, etc. Temperature very hot.
2.0 Mediocre
Cons: I needed a getaway and had gotten a deal online with a room with a queen bed. When I arrived they said the room wasn’t ready (I arrived minutes after check in time and it wasn’t busy, so I’m not sure why it wasn’t ready) and so instead gave me a bed with two twin beds on the first floor. Both nights I was there people were coming in and out of their rooms all night long, I didn’t fall asleep until maybe 3:30am. Next time someone comes in and they already have a room booked, I recommend not changing what they’ve paid for and making it seem like a better situation. I had a very clean and quiet pup with me, so I hope I wasn’t put in the sketchy part of the hotel just because I had a dog when you guys advertise that you allow dogs. It seems like there’s maybe drug deals going on or something, because it’s not normal for people to be coming in and out of their room until 5 AM. Maybe you guys should check up on that or have a police man there during late night hours. And next time let the single young woman traveling alone have the room she paid for that isn’t surrounded by sketchy people.
7.0 Good
Pros: The location is why we chose this hotel. The staff is very helpful.
Cons: Having the ice machine only on the lobby floor is inconvenient when we are in for the night. Not being able to enter the building with a room key in parking lot doors in inconvenient; especially at night.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendliness of staff
Cons: None
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff and good quality for the money!
Cons: Everything is pretty basic and there’s no shampoo or conditioner provided
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was very clean and the nicest Motel 6 that I have stayed in.
Cons: When we got to our room, the heat had been left on high and it was at least 80 degrees in our room and the air conditioning unit hadn't been turned on for the season. It was extremely hot all night even with the window open. There wasn't a microwave wave in our room. When I asked if there was one I could use, I was told the one in the lobby had to be taken out because of Covid 19. None was offered for my room.

Pros: Is proximity to the Kittery Outlets
Cons: We booked a suite to cook breakfast in the kitchenette. There were no dishes, silverware, pots or pans. We had to get a box and carry it up to our room and it had no fry pan and had to ask for dish soap to run the dishwasher and the coffee pot a joke.

Pros: Bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet and clean. Great location

Pros: Room was fine for what we paid for. Was nice that there was a pool hot tub and gym. Pool could have been warmer though - I couldn’t get into it cause it was cold
Cons: I have literally never been to a hotel where the staff does not greet you when you walk in. Instead my husband and I got looked up and down every single time we came back to the hotel. It was honestly so strange.

5.0 Okay
Pros: Location!
Cons: Air conditioning units were incredibly loud and rooms were not at the level expected at this price point. Only one person on front desk so we had to wait a long time to check in. Had an issue and it took the front desk s long time to answer the phone.

6.5 Good
Pros: General atmosphere was pleasant
Cons: The bathroom did not function well. The shower was not working well. The price of the hotel and breakfast were such that when it came to coffee there was an additional charge for a latte. I found that rather petty and disconcerting.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Comfortable bed. Great food. Beautiful Christmas decorations. Their professional commitment to safety during a middle-of-the-night fire alarm when we had to evacuate the building.
Cons: Food/drink service was a little slow, but it was a very busy holiday time. The outdoor hot tub was out of service which was very disappointing. Allowing dogs in the lounge where food is served is not cool.

Cons: I️ was very disappointed with this facility. I️ has wanted to stay here for many years and found that it was more like a standard Marriot than an historic hotel, the customer service was minimal for the ticket price. No turn down service, nothin
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: I did enjoy the room service breakfast, though plates might have been a nice addition for our food. The waiter who brought that food was exceptional.Exterior of hotel was pretty, and the lobby. Really small room took away from the experience completely.
Cons: It was very overpriced. The room was tiny and you had to move chairs to even open/shut blinds. You could hear people in corridors all night. The "ocean view" was off in the distance and was really parking lot view with a far away water view.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great staff Excellent food Love the outdoor jacuzzi
Cons: All good

Cons: The lobby, hallways and pool area were very dirty. Paint was chipping, pool water was foggy, everything felt kind of grimy. Water from water cooler tasted off, like an old metallic taste.

Pros: The room and bathroom were newly redone and very clean. Pool and hot tub area were also very clean/. Freshly baked cookies in the lobby and coffee available 24 hours. This hotel was wonderful

1.0 Poor
Cons: Staff said I paid for 2 nights. They lied. They charged me --- to stay second night. Bad customer service. Never go back
4.0 Okay
Pros: We liked the location. You have easy access to get downtown and to the highway.
Cons: We didn’t like that we were given NO notice that the pool wasn’t open. Not even at the front desk when we checked in! We had our 5 and 3 year old in their bathing suits ready to swim and found out by a not on the pool room door that it was closed. The heat wasn’t working properly. We finally figured out after trying to set the heat for as low as 60 that we could at least use the AC function to keep the room at a reasonable temperature. The breakfast bar was lacking quality. The waffles were okay but only if you wanted them plain. The syrup was terrible. Unless you wanted to have cereal or some form of toasted bread and juice you may as well plan on eating elsewhere. The room also wasn’t very clean. Upon leaving we were checking under the beds to make sure the kids didn’t leave anything behind and there was trash that wasn’t from us under both beds.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: extra charge for parking
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place. Rooms are spacious. Amenities are great. Pool is great.
Cons: There isn't anything I didnt like very accommodating. Great place

Pros: They no longer have jacuzzi! They don’t provide tooth paste and housekeeping takes forever to come and front desk staff be gone most of the time . However they lady with blonde hair and glasses is the best !! I like her customer service wish I would’ve got her name . But it’s not a bad place it’s fair
5.0 Okay
Pros: Was close to the event we were attending
Cons: We arrived late- no batteries in the remote, tv didn't work but came to find out it wasn't plugged in. Sink was clogged.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Even though the room could use a little updating everything was spotless and everyone was exceptional. They definitely go out of their way to make it a pleasant experience.
3.0 Mediocre
Pros: Breakfast was good
Cons: The hotel needs to be more updated the bathroom needs to be painted so is the shower bath in the room the cloth draw was ripping apart in the bottom and the bed was not conftable you can feel the bed springs
5.0 Okay
Pros: Awful Breakfast
2.0 Mediocre
Cons: The vents to the heater were caked with dust, the remote to the TV had food left on it from previous people, the comforters weren't that great, we froze every night because they were so thin....... In my opinion it's literally one step away from being the econo lodge, the pictures online of the rooms looked nothing like the actual room itself.
1.0 Poor
Pros: The mural in the back parking lot
Cons: Pics online show a hot tub - there is no hot tub. Room was not clean, hand soap was from the previous guests, and we had no comforter upon arrival. Asked for a comforter on our way out. Got back to hotel at 12:30 am and our comforter was tossed folded on the bed (bed should’ve been made IMO) and it had a big pee stain. Went to get 2 more comforters and one of them had a big burn hole and one of them had a red stain (blood or tomato sauce?). Went back down to get CLEAN comforters and the front desk associate was stripping already-made beds to find us a clean one but those all had stains too. One of the beds was made with a pee stain that was the size of a a microwave! After about 7 blankets, finally found a couple that didn’t disgust us but after seeing their standard of cleanliness, who knows how clean the rest of the place actually is. Also would’ve liked to see some dairy-free milk options at breakfast.

Pros: Clean room. Comfortable bed. I arrived late and left early so no real interaction with staff.
