Flights from North America to Washington: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who flew the route from North America to Washington

Seattle is not an easy airport to navigate. Going from RDM TO SEA is not a time saver. SEA Gates are far apart, it's crowded & not attractive. Flying into it is beautiful though. My advice - allow sufficient time (min 1 hour) for connecting flights. Love SFO for a layover if possible & flying out of LAX if international. Tucson airport was adorable & easy. Loved the artwork. PDX is a better alternative to SEA if possible; it has class.

Oakland is a nice small airport. Getting through security was a breeze with TSA precheck. We did have to stand in line for about 20minutes to drop bags as there were no agents at the counter. I had the most delicious crispy Al pastore taco near face 14
ReginaFlew with GOLMIA-SEAJun 2025
It is a good connection, it gives you enough time to go through passport control and luggage claim and drop off. Eat close to the boarding gate because the next flight lasts 6 hours and there is no food service on the plane.
JeffreyFlew with Alaska AirlinesSTL-SEAJun 2025
Don’t get to the airport too early. Security is fast and lines are typically short!

Idaho Falls is not a large airport, so it was easy to find my way around. Take a meal if you want more than a snack.

Flights in the late afternoon and evenings are often delayed, just be prepared for that.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesMSP-SEAMay 2025
MSP is an excellent airport. If possible, obtain some type of precheck clearance for initial airport screening.
RobinFlew with Alaska AirlinesLIH-SEAMay 2025
Get to the Lihue airport 3 hours before the flight because there are multiple security steps and extremely slow security processing. Even if you have TSA precheck/global entry.

I like Alaska. If you need a screen attached in front of your seat, better to check your flights first.
KaylaFlew with Alaska AirlinesMSP-SEAApr 2025
Be prepared for possible long wait at security, make sure to check baggage policies and carry one allowances.
MargaretFlew with Hawaiian AirlinesBUR-SEAMay 2025
The delays we experienced on both flights to and from were cancelled or delayed which made for a very stressful trip. I would suggest monitoring the flight status continuously before arriving at the airport.
JohnFlew with Alaska AirlinesPIT-SEAJan 2025
They HOT tag your luggage if you have a connecting flight with a short layover, so any time you need to connect from Seattle on a subsequent flight just check to make sure your luggage is handled that way. While I was on board looking out the window, I saw my suitcase being loaded last - LIFO planning so that it would be unloaded first for my connection. Smooth sailing after that…. Great service!
KrishFlew with Alaska AirlinesFAI-SEAJan 2025
Fairbanks is a small and efficient airport. As with most flights it may be better to take earlier flights to minimize the impact of delays, since many folks have connections.

Seattle airports have lots of stuff to look at and buy. However if you are a little person who is always cold, ware a long coat and layers to stay warm. Maybe even take gloves.
AlanFlew with Alaska AirlinesMSP-SEADec 2024
We need more maps or layouts of the airport available and what's available when flying to the next airport or where terminals are located to maximize time when there are layovers.

Flying Alaska Airlines from Boston to Seattle was an example of getting exactly what you expect. A no-frills basic experience, but one where the important things were accomplished, timely departure, on-time arrival, no drama, no glitches, completely as anticipated. I paid a little extra for one offered perk (seat selection), and I'm glad I did because my early morning flight was full. Next time, I'll likely pre-order a snack, since they looked good, were served promptly, and are priced right.

Know that there is a kiosk for printing your bag tags without having to stand in the line for someone to do this task for you. Know that there is a specific security line if you do not want to remove electronics from your bags.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesPIT-SEAOct 2024
Early Wednesday mornings must be the prime time to board because there was no time to stash my watch, etc. into my bag before security since there was almost NO line. Another bonus for morning people.
Verified travelerFlew with Alaska AirlinesDEN-SEAOct 2024
Go early, it’s a big airport. There are two TSA screening areas, one might be more crowded than the other. From checking it to the gate give yourself at least 20-30 minutes to get there.

Buy something in the airport to eat before boarding as its a long flight and the snacks are not enough unless you plan to sleep the whole ride.

Now that Southwest doesn't fly in and out of Bellingham Washington there are no good options to Seattle. You're best off driving or getting a shuttle, it's much more likely you'll get to Seattle near the time you think you will. Flying is just not a dependable option anymore.

Dulles, like Seattle has a tram. That can be surprising. The TSA at Seattle is notoriously LONG, however, both times in the last year that I have flown, that has not been the case. At Dulles, the TSA lines were efficient as well. The airport interior is well marked for getting around. I did note that the garbages were full in the Southwest and Alaska areas- as we were there 6 hours and had lots of time to notice nit-picky things that nobody else would care about :). It was convenient to have a "charging station" nearby the Alaska waiting area (right across from our gate). It had 3 ports, and I noticed that as soon as I unplugged mine, it was jumped right on. Suggestion- have Dulles add a few more for passengers who need to recharge phones. Great experience, thank you.
KatieFlew with Alaska AirlinesEWR-SEAJun 2024
Alaska Airlines offered free checked bag and personal bag with ticket price which I found to be very reasonable. Of the other airlines I found Alaska Airlines to be most comfortable, have friendly and efficient staff and reasonable pricing. Newark airport is rather easy to navigate given its size. We found Seattle airport to be a bit difficult to navigate, especially when returning a rental. Customers in this instance should allow extra time for the car return, bus to the terminal and navigating through the airport which included several monorails to get to our boarding terminal and through security to the gate. Signage for security was confusing we needed to ask for direction and restaurants were limited and short staffed once through security. As long as you allow for extra time, we found it to be relatively painless.

It is a very crowded flight, so I advice to choose seats in advance. We didn’t have that option and that was the only complaint I’d have because they put us in the middle seats and we both wanted aisle seats. My sister was able to switch but I wasn’t. She was switched to the back, almost to the last row.

Confusing now Hawaiian and Alaskan have merged, hard to check in - they need to uncomplicated things.

The crew in first class did an amazing job keeping me comfortable, well fed and with plenty to drink. They work hard and deserve to be recognized

I would have liked if the flight existed. To be fair the federal government canceled it. But, since it WAS canceled, I would have liked it if Alaska Airlines had moved a finger to assist me rather then abandoning me with my luggage, unable to check it, for 14 hours in Portland. So federal regulations forbid them from storing my bag? Then at least help me find storage or SOMETHING.

Hate this airline. Uncomfortable seats, no screens, no good food.

Boarding was good. Alaska Airlines is good. On time good. clean. The little bag of peanuts was horrible.

Have mounted entertainment for long flights instead of making customers use their own equipment

I wish my checked suitcase could have been checked since I arrived an hour before take off .

The staff was so kind and friendly! Boarding was efficient and communication was timely. I would seek out flying with Alaska Airlines in the future.

The cabin crew on this team was particularly kind and excellent.

Check in went pretty well and you didn't lose my bag. After I got a drink from the drink cart they charged me for it, and at the crazy overpriced airport rates. Never had that happen before, is that an american thing? what madness.

The ticket agents in West Palm Beach on Friday afternoon Nov. 7th were incredible in getting us on an earlier plane to Atlanta during the government shutdown. Had the taken our original flight we would have missed our connection. She did this on her own, We didn't even have to ask, and she did it all with a smile and showing genuine concern that we would be taken care of. We are very grateful and thankful. We fly often, and now we will be sure to fly Delta.

the over had ligth did not work'd for the all way

Flight delayed then cancelled. Misplaced luggage. Still do not have. Rented car 1100 mile drive. I had to buy some overnight Hotels clothes toiletries gas food at my expense. Still not home. Not sure where luggage is. Over 4 hours on hold to Felta

I truly love flying with Delta. They have always treated me with the upmost respect

Our flight attendant in FIRST CLASS was one of the worst I’ve ever had. She was not at all pleasant, nor particularly good at her service.

Everything went well and was good. Nothing exceptional, but no complaints either. Cheap seats are pretty comfortable.

DELTA does a terrific job making sure you are well taken care of during the flight, gives you assurance before the flight through numerous email notifications about your upcoming flight & lastly good follow up after the flight making sure your needs were mat. It has been, is & will continue to be my carrier of choice in all my future travels. Good Job DELTA

Staff were friendly and happy. Delta could make sure passengers that don't have the app know of changes. Without Kayak I would not have known about the change of gate or the delay. Kayak was faster to notify me.

They ended up paying for the bag twice, but the counter wouldn't take my baggage receipt. Left it to me to resolve. Not sure how to resolve the issue.

The customer service before board was very rude and when I expressed my concerns about making the connecting flight she laughed and told me I bought the wrong ticket. I explained once it showed the flight was delayed it no longer let me change seats or anything. I was trying to upgrade to make sure I would get to the next gate on time.

Starlink wifi on the Embraer E175 is an excellent experience. I was able to connect and work from IAD all the way to approach into BTV.

Great crew, excellent landing, good food. Over all great experience. Thank you!

Older aircraft, no meal, only food was for purchase. Not impressed United.

United needs to step up their game. Delayed flight leaving Seattle, San Francisco. Older aircraft, not very comfortable.

Always wish for more healthy, gluten free options. We have to bring our own.

Having a long layover, I was very appreciative of the ability to stand by for an earlier flight. Other airlines like Delta have refused this to me in the past, just to be mean (because my ticket class wasn't high enough). United went out of their way to help me get to my destination early, which I really appreciated given that it was the third leg of a 24+ hour journey for me.

This flight leg was fantastic - super comfortable and a great selection of things to watch on the TV. Staff were excellent, really above and beyond.

Other than a way way too cold cabinets for the entire flight, all was great

The flight attendants were very rude, beyond comprehension. I took a business class from London to SFO for the first time on United. When I asked for a second piece of bread during dinner, the serving attendant threw a 3rd bread on my plate and said, “here. You can have this one too”! I couldn’t believe the rudeness of the attendant. Most all attendants were very rude, unhelpful, sing the food was absolutely disgusting. Never fly United internationally in business class. My flight back to SFO was a nightmare!!

Not pleasant trip cross country when the entertainment and WiFi system not working. No entertainment for entirety of route. Staff was rather nonchalant in that they dismissed the problem due to age of plane. It would have been nice to know this up front so I could have come prepared to read or download movies before boarding Coincidentally or not, there was a similar issue with the entertainment system on my previous flight I took on my fist leg of the trip. There are no seat TVs, so you must rely on the app when it works. United can do better. Also, what use it it to pay for boarding group 2 when half of the passengers are in the same line as you?

we landed at cmh ten minutes early but had to sit on tarmac for twenty minutes because a plane was at our gate despite the fact that 3 other gates were open.

flight was good until we arrived at cmh ten minutes early but then sat on tarmac for twenty minutes because a plane was at our gate, so we had to wait despite the pilot tellling us that 3 other gates were open.

The experience with American Airlines was good, although the Philippines Airlines flight was much better (better seats, better food, better entertainment options, overall better). Again, the MIA to LAX flight was fine, but nothing in comparison to the comfort and accommodations of the Philippines Airlines flight from LAX to MNL.

I have a gluten allergy so did have any food

I have a gluten allergy so didn't have any food

Loved the crew . Absolutely no complaints. Except for luggage lost

Everything was good The connects, with no blame to crew. Or pilots. I understand they are short staffed. Everything went well for me. I'll be using you guys again in May if not sooner.

this plane was really old, had exit row seats and tray was in arm of seat so super uncomfortable to use. another seat they could t even use the tray it was broke. seat i. front of me had duct tape on it cause seat was ripped open... this plane should either be updated or retired.

Baggage handling poor. Second time this has happened. My bag went to San Francisco instead of Fiji. No apology. Luckily Nadi airport staff are fantastic. My bag arrived in Fiji the next day.

We loved the steward on the plane. He made the night enjoyable

When I wanted to check in 3 hours prior to boarding time, the employees mentioned “a little over an hour delay” so I waited for an hour then I went to go look for food in the terminal and most people from that flight were in the same area looking for food. Finally I decided after food to check to see if it’s anytime closer and now it’s 2 mins until boarding closes?! What are you kidding me? I didn’t receive anything via sms about boarding now nor via email or on the intercom. I luckily made it through, barely, and then there’s no room for my carry on mind you I’m in the very first row so I had to place my purse in one further row back and my carry on sections down. Not sure who pays for better seats to get your stuff placed all over the plane but that was the worst experience I’ve ever had flying with anyone.

Better than expected. Staff were friendly and nice on both flights.

There was no one at the counter to assist with our check in. The app didn’t work, so I arrived at the airport with time to check in and I couldn’t because no employees were there. When I finally got someone on the phone, it was inside the 60min rule and they said I could no longer check in and they could sell me another ticket. We had to scramble and pay an additional $800 for tickets and THEN AFTER (about 60 min from my original convo with customer service and 10min after original departure time) I had boarded my new flight, there was email saying my original flight from Frontier was delayed and leaving 2hr 50min later, but I STILL wouldn’t have been able to check in. Which means customer service should have been able to see it and let me check in because I was well within my check in time. When I call Frontier, they hang up on me. So their app didn’t work and they employees left and they take zero responsibility or assistance with their “customer service”

Terrible. Flight cancelled with no reasoning and no flights to rebook. Employees were useless and did nothing to help. Did not even know where to retrieve luggage from the cancelled flight. Flyers beware.

No fault of Frontier staff: plane was very late, reached Orlando at 1 am, took a while to get luggage. Weather, gov financial shutdown impact on TSA, air controllers seemed to have multiple flights backed up. Frontier staff seemed to cope as gracefully as possible. It did reassure me that I and my new hip could adapt to travel challenges. Food/entertainment were irrelevant to my trip.

Terrible. The canceled my entire flight when I requested a refund for a trip frontier canceled trip one way.

Boarding was on time and plane departed as scheduled. There are obviously no amenities (food, drink, entertainment) on Frontier, but there also didn't seem to be any issues with luggage space either.

Inbound plane was on time and flight departed on time with no issues while boarding.

I knew going into this that Frontier, being a low cost carrier, would be pretty bare bones and charge for most extras but this was made up for by the fact that the airplane was a reasonably new Airbus, every employee was great and best of all, Everett Washington is an amazing airport - thanks Frontier for flying there!!!

i was unable to check in the flight. refund requested
