Terrible customer service
Pros: Car was OK.
Cons: I prepaid for 3 days, and somehow, the staff was convinced that I only paid for 2 days (despite the fact that I showed them my Kayak receipt and credit card charge. After 15 minutes on complaining when picking up the car, I thought it was resolved. When I dropped the car off, same story: I owed another day. Both women helping out were very rude. Rose was the second and basically told me to "work it out with it with Kayak because it wasn't her problem."

SHAME on HERTZ!
Pros: Sadly NOTHING of my experience was positive. Please read below to get the FULL STORY. And forgive the occasional all-caps but you'll understand when you read my tale of woe. Thanks
Cons: Do yourself a favor and learn from my oh so TRAGIC experience, and it was the single WORST car rental experience in my LIFE. I took a red-eye into JFK - NYC. Got in at 6:30am. When I made my reservation on Kayak, I mistakenly did not specify my pick up time so it defaulted to noon - my bad. So the night before the flight I called Hertz and changed my pickup time to 6am. The customer service said that it was all taken care of, no problem. When I arrived at the Hertz counter in NY they said my pickup time is 12 noon and they have no car for me. I have to wait until noon. Despite my explanation that their phone representative changed my pickup time they said no can do. What they did offer me, if I didn't want to wait (uh, no, I'd love to wait over 5 hours and spend it with the "it's 6:30am and I don't care about you Hertz staff) , I could PAY MORE and get another car to take now. I once again explained it was their customer service that bungled my time change, but I got a NO CAN DO. Without any options I PAID MORE and got an "upgrade" - from mid-size to full size. I was alone so I didn't need or want a slightly bigger car. Next, the interior of the car was DIRTY. I got black stuff on my hands from the sticky steering wheel. And a spilled drink was dried up on the middle console. So I drove to the checkout kiosk and told the Hertz staff that my car was dirty inside. She literally said in a very rude tone "that's not my job, I've got nothing to do with that". So I made a U turn and went to the check in lane. I told the Hertz staff my car was dirty and the guy said the SAME thing then walked off. I swear there is an end to this so bear with me - it gets even better. So I take out my luggage and go back to the Hertz desk. I told them about the dirty car and the rude employees and they readily gave me another car that I still had to PAY MORE for. Fast forward to check out. I bring the car back and nobody is directing people into the checkout lanes. I go behind the lane with most cars to get in line while others arrive and go right to the front of all the other lanes expecting to check out before those who were waiting in line. There is only ONE checkout person and a mass of cars with unhappy customers waiting and having to figure out who was there first. Finally I get out of there. I call HERTZ to relay my experience and all the customer service offers is a voucher for the next rental. But I'm NEVER renting from Hertz again so that means nothing to me. Also, they won't even refund me the EXTRA I had to pay when the pickup change was "all taken care of, no problem". No problem? ONLY PROBLEMS. Next, I'm told that if I want any charges reduced on my bill, I need to deal with JFK HERTZ directly and discuss with the manager. So I call JFK HERTZ to speak with a manager and am given an answering machine saying that they will call me back within 4 hours. THEY NEVER CALLED BACK. SHAME ON YOU HERTZ and learn from my unfortunate experience.

So impressive from beginning to end
Pros: The van was in immaculate condition. Pick up was so simple and efficient, as was the drop off. Well done Hertz.

Pros: I returned car to NYC - did not have new rental there. Questions don't really apply.
Cons: Difficult to find car rental return place. Did not see signs on airport property for rental return. Was very concerned about being late. Finally had to stop and research where location was while I was on airport property.

Great car at a great price
Pros: Reserving through Kayak well in advance resulted in a highly competitive price for my 9-day rental. I received a clean Nissan Altima, which was ready when promised. During the trip the car sustained minor damage. When I returned the car the staff were courteous and efficient. While I won't know how the costs of repair will work out yet - the car and the staff were all great.
Cons: This rental was great. I only wish that Hertz, like Zipcar, would provide specific information on the car (make, model and features) and options before picking up the car.

Pros: I liked that the pick up of the car was in Manhattan. The young man that helped me during the drop off was very polite and professional.
Cons: There was quite a selection of cars in my category on the lot. It seems I got the worst car. I didn't notice how dirty the car was until I was outside in the sunlight.

Personable and efficient staff
Pros: I liked the personnell at this branch of Hertz. The car was ready and waiting for us and this branch at 185th Street in Manhattan had ample space and relaxed staffing. Worth the trip to 185th Street from midtown to pick up the car.

Cons: They did not have my car, and so I had to get a Zipcar and pay more than twice the amount that I had budgeted.

good ride, but not cleaned properly
Pros: The car drove well.
Cons: The car had a black residue on the windshield and front. We didn't notice it when we checked it since it was a wet, black car and the black residue wasn't visible until car had dried. Drugs (not ours) were found in the car by boarder agents when we returned from Canada causing a delay and causing us to have to repack the car. Also the gas tank was not full. We only had to return it filled to the pickup level, but it is much easier to just fill before returning rather than worry about the return level.

Pros: The Hertz reps at both pickup and drop off were pleasant and professional. That makes all the difference when choosing where to spend your money!
Cons: A little pricey for a one day rental, but I understand it was almost a holiday weekend.

The worst experience I had - missed a three day we
Cons: For some reason kayak and hearts allows to book a car for the time the location closes. I arrived at noon and the place was already closed(my pick up time was noon). No one waited for me. No one called. In a Second our three months in advance long weekend plans ruined. When I call Heartz they said there's not to do. The only option I had was to go to another location and pay 4 times!!!! As much ($150 originally and at the other location the price would have been $650 for three day rental) I couldn't afford it and the rest is history. We had to cancel out hote reservation and my girlfriend and I missed a family wedding. Don't rent from Hertz don't use Kayak and always check when the location closes and make sure your reservation is not for that time. They wouldn't wait or call you and even leave earlier.

Worse car ever!
Cons: It was too small. I'll never order an economy-sized car again. We felt like we were driving a toy. You could here everything from the outside. It was so loud we couldn't even play the radio.

Pros: I received a great rate, then the next day I realized that I made the rental at the north end of the city instead of the bottom, and called to change it. The rate tripled. Then the guy on the phone let me use a promo code, which brought it down to a reasonable price, so I was happy. Then when I picked it up, the car went from $51 to $200!!! I was only using the car for 3 hours. RIDICULOUS. Watch your back.
