KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Asheville
Asheville has plenty to offer, from a vibrant arts scene to historical buildings, and, of course, the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a 1-hour drive from the center. Don’t miss out on any of Asheville’s attractions and rent a car to get the most out of your visit. Many of the outer attractions, including the Blue Ridge Mountains, are not available with public transport and a car will give you the most flexibility to explore the city and surroundings in your own time.
Asheville Regional Airport features five on-site car rental companies which offer vehicles for all tastes. Follow the signs out of the terminal to their service desks and pick up a car to be in Asheville center in less than half an hour via the I-26 W. The transfer will take almost an hour with public transport, so the most convenient way to start your time is with a rental car directly from the airport. If arriving by train or bus, there are also car rental locations in the city -- for instance, in Tunnel Road or Patton Avenue.
Asheville has wonderfully breathtaking scenic routes; however, these routes are also very steep in some places and it is important to shift to a lower gear instead of breaking down on your way. If braking too much, the brakes can overheat and, in the worst case scenario, stop working altogether. Drive slowly through the winding roads in and around Asheville as well, especially in winter, with snow and ice possibly on the streets. Ensure the rental car has winter tires, make sure to adjust your speed, and have some extra snacks and thermos flasks ready in the car in case you get stuck.
The I-240 goes right through the heart of Asheville and the I-40 is a major route connecting many places, so these roads can be congested when commuters come into Asheville in the morning between around 7-9am and leave the city between 5-8pm. If going west, the US-23 can be an alternate route, depending on your ultimate goal.
Traffic is a significant factor when renting a car in Asheville, NC. If you decide to drive between all the sites in and around Asheville, you will want to avoid highways unless they are interstate highways. If you choose to drive on secondary roads and/or city streets, then you will be in for hours of frustrating bumper-to-bumper traffic every day of your stay. So, before you put your suitcases in the trunk and begin planning your road trip, check the traffic conditions on Asheville's main highways at the time of your visit.
You also need to consider your trip's safety and security considerations. This will help you avoid any safety concerns arising due to the distance between you and the car rental company. For example, in Asheville, a car rental company may require customers to park the vehicle in a designated parking lot, which can add some additional security concerns.
Asheville car rentals often have drive-up lanes so you can pull up and pick up your rental car without going inside the car rental company's office. Therefore, it's essential to check the car rental company's rules and regulations regarding where you can pick up the rental car.

I was charged an extra $200 that was supposed to be a security deposit and the funds were not released. Then I call hertz customer service and I am told this is a privately own hertz agency and they cannot help me with my account. Called the agency and they don’t answer. Really bad experience. Never hertz again

Pros:
Staff in Asheville was terrible. They ended up giving us the wrong car and we only found it out when we dropped it off in Jacksonville. Staff in Jacksonville as almost as bad. The car was also not cleaned before. Someone's old coke can was left in the car.
Cons:
Whatever you do, make sure you get a PAPER contract when you pick up your car. They said we didn't need one in Asheville and they just emailed it to us, but once we got to Jacksonville, Hertz acted like we should have had one and they treated us as if we were the problem with it not being there.

Pros:
The lady who worked with us at the 891 Patton Ave location in Asheville was amazing. Very professional and an outstanding representative of your company. She supplied us with the perfect mid sized vehicle for our mountain travels.
They took over an hour to get it for me. Then it wasn’t clean. They said their equipment was broken so they couldn’t make it quite clean. It was filled only a quarter full of gas.

There was no car for us. I don’t know whether to blame Enterprise or Kayak but the website was not current. you should not be able to rent a car that does not exist. The only good thing is that someone called and told us before we got to the facility.

Everything was awesome except the fact that the card we had reserved wasn’t there so when we got ready to leave in the morning, we had to wait a couple of extra hours because they didn’t have the vehicle there. It had to be transported. Other than that. everything was amazing and excellent. The customer service the person who checked us out with it was amazing as well, very friendly knowledgeable.

Complete waste our our time, car was booked 20miles away from Airport, useless!
It was very difficult to find the office. It turns out it was inside a mall and there is no sign anywhere outside or inside the mall telling you where it is. We had to ask several workers at other shops in the mall - although we weren’t even sure it was even in there! Never had such a frustrating experience trying to rent a car. Once we found the counter everything went smoothly. The woman said they are not permitted to hang signage (!?)

When I rented the car I told them I wanted to pick it up at the Ashville Airport. When trying to pick up the vehicle I was told that my car was at a different location. I had to get a taxi which I had to pay $55.00 for. Also the car was dirty and the gas tank was not full. I was told that I could not drop the car off at the airport without paying $250.00 fee. Because of My early flight I was forced to dod this. My experiance with Kayak Sucked Big time. I would never use Kayak again.

Pros:
Friendly and professional staff
Cons:
Additional staff. Had to wait 45 min for car during pickup
I rented a manager special for $179. That wasn’t exactly cheap for three days. The manager special came and it was a minivan for me one person. The car was absolutely filthy on the outside. I had to have it washed and clean before I could attend my Luncheon in Asheville. No one was there to assist in finding the car at the Asheville airport. What a mess it is there! You go from one end of the car rental trailer outdoors to the other to get the rental and then finding the car , do t arrive in the dark. no one is there to assist you.. You just aimlessly wonder around the parking lot asking other customers how they found their car. If you don’t Purchase all of the extras, the people at the counter aren’t very nice. You feel shuttled in and shuttled out like cattle. I was asked to sign a paper that there was no outside damage or blemishes to the car without even seeing the car/Minivan. I would never rent from Thrifty again.

The car was not cleaned when we picked it up. The back seat was full of dog hair and there was mud on the floor. We did not realize it until we had passengers sit in the back seat several days later. When I told the agent at drop off that the car wasn’t cleaned I was told I may be charged for cleaning the car since I didn’t take pictures of the problem before we left the airport.

Pros:
The staff at the airport was uncooperative and when I asked if I could change the drop off location the person at the counter made a point to be short and was not helpful. I also asked about adding another driver and he seemed annoyed at my questions. Because of this I canceled my reservation and booked at the counter next door. He told me that I would still be charged for the day if I switched in a manner that was intended to scare me than in making any effort to be helpful. but once I made the other reservation he was able to refund my money.
Not much, honestly. I specifically rented a small car and was given a larger SUV that I didn't really want to drive. See below. The dropoff in Chesapeake was fine. The rental price was much better than what competitors quoted me.
Cons:
Just about everything. The vehicle was in need of alignment so driving it was a challenge. And despite being told there was half a tank of gas, it was barely 1/4 of a tank. The pickup took forever because there was only one employee and the Asheville location was quite busy. And people pick specific cars during rental for a reason. I was supposed to get a Corolla or similar. Instead I got this EcoSport SUV that was bigger than I wanted, and wasn't really in great shape. Beyond that, the dropoff location is really hard to find. It's in an area with lots of other businesses and there's no sign that's visible from the road. If you happen to turn into the right place, there's a very small sign next to the front door that says "AVIS/Budget Group" but otherwise the building looks like a white house next to a Verizon store.

Cons:
The car was absolutely filthy and most of the staff were rude, even on the phone trying to figure out where in the mall they're located. They didn't give me a printout with my total when I picked up the car and it wasn't emailed to me, turns out they overcharged me.

Pros:
Drop off was easy, convenient location in airport.
Cons:
The car was not ready at the specified time. When it was 1 hour later at the closing time of the Avis branch, it had not been cleaned or vacuumed and smelled like marijuana smoke. Unacceptable during a pandemic.
