Hertz called me 9 hours before I was supposed to pick up my car to tell me they had overbooked by 200 cars and were unable to honor my reservation. There was no attempt by Hertz to resolve the huge problem they had just created for me, I was on my own. Fortunately, their competitor Avis took a same day reservation and provided me with a car that afternoon.
