FAQs - booking United States flights

  • How should I choose my US destination city?

This depends on whether you want to visit the East or West Coast of the US, land in middle of America or arrive down south. So look for flights that land at Los Angeles Airport (LAX), in New York at JFK or at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL). Otherwise, choose Denver International Airport (DEN) to be roughly in central USA.

  • How can I save on carbon emissions on flights to United States?

You can halve the carbon emissions on your US flight by booking on either Aer Lingus or KLM. These leave from Manchester Airport and stop either in Dublin or Amsterdam, before arriving at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport. You can save almost as much by choosing Delta Airlines as your carrier, also flying the latter route.

  • What amenities can I expect at Manchester Airport?

Manchester Airport has all the facilities of a large, modern international airport. It has a large duty-free section, with an online platform through which you can order in advance to collect when you arrive for your flight. You’ll also find more than 20 food and drink outlets. You can request personalised limited mobility assistance in advance.

  • How can I get to Manchester Airport conveniently from the city centre?

To get from central Manchester to the airport is simply a matter of catching a Transpennine Express or Northern Rail train. Taken together, they leave from Manchester Piccadilly Station every 20min and will get you to the airport in roughly 20min. You can also use Megabus UK – bus trips take about 40min.

  • What child seat laws does the USA have?

Child seat requirements differ from state to state in terms of age ranges. However, the country’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends rear-facing child seats up till the age of three, and front-facing ones up to the age of seven. From the ages of eight to 12, a booster seat plus seatbelt is advised.

  • Do I need a visa for the United States?

As a British citizen, you won’t need to obtain a visa to enter the US, according to the US visa waiver programme. What you will need, however, is an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation). It will be valid for two years and you can enter the country as many times as you like, up to 90 days at a time.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from Manchester to the United States?

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Manchester to the United States?

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Manchester to the United States?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to the United States with an airline and back to Manchester with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Manchester to the United States?

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

Very frustrated with boarding gate crew. She announced the plane was small and they would be limiting us to one item to carry on. Not a problem for me as I understand the tiny planes have limited space!! Not the case here! It was a rather large plane and had plenty of room for bags! So because I don’t want to be one of “those people” who ignores the request to check a carry on I did so asking if I would be able to pick it up at the bottom of the ramp on arrival in Knoxville to which she responded “yes”! Then I watched as every other passenger held onto their 2 items and boarded!! Then when we arrived in Knoxville our 2 carry ons had been put with all the other luggage and we had to go to baggage pick up and wait for all the big checked bags to come off the carousel! So she lied!! Frustrating. Next time I won’t be so nice!

Everything was great. The big planes could still stand to have a bit more leg room. Crew was amazing!!

It was a good experience except when boarding a female flight attendant did not go out of her way to assist my teenage daughters in finding space for their carry-ons after their compartments were full.

The flight was excellent, I recommend people to fly with Delta

On time departure, smooth trip, flight attendant told through passengers the gate we would arrive at and the gate our outbound flight was departing from. Early arrival

The crew were very welcoming and helpful. I just wish economy had a bit more leg room. My knees were constantly hitting the chair in front of me.

Checking in at the airport the agent only booked the first keg of my trip and had my checked luggage going to the airport with a layover! Never was issued a boarding pass for the second leg or received sticker fir my checked bag. All was well in the end! Delta agents helped to resolve the situation!!!

Delayed due to an ill passenger after loading. Not preventable on Delta's part. Was in first class. The seats are becoming worn and detaching from their velcro attachments. Only got snacks on flight. The attendant was not the friendliest.

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

From the start everything was perfectly fine. First meal was fantastic. Breakfast needs a lot of work and food was overcooked and not very nice for breakfast. Staff for a fantastic friendly nice we came round and check we need anything else to eat or drink

We originally had a window seat. Our seats were changed to the center isle between 2 bathrooms. This was a red eye flight and we were traveling with an infant. Due to the light from the bathroom doors opening and closing throughout the night our infant would not sleep and cried the whole night which kept us awake and everyone around us. It was a very unpleasant experience for everyone trying to sleep.

Left from gate 30 minutes before flight. Never been late to a flight ever. It says 15 minutes before explicitly on the ticket.

I like the boarding process, it was fast. The seat doesn’t have a TV for a long flight and food wasn’t served, just snacks.

Left on time. Arrived early. Turbulence coming in and gate not open due to early arrival but expected.

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

Even though we left CMI late, we mostly made up the time.

Delayed almost 4 hours for a 45 minute flight with no explanation.

Seriously, not displaying departure gate until very last minute is awful. Specially when you have to take an elevator and then transport to go to the sub-terminal. That’s awful in such a busy airport as Heathrow. And I cannot choose seat on this flight because it’s run by British Airways, even entering locator code.

Somehow I got “offloaded” even though I had my boarding pass and was in transit Food is horrible Staff were nice and cheerful No headphones were provided on 11 hours flight

The staff were very helpful with lots of refreshments on offer. The toilets were clean. The seats were comfortable and entertainment was good. No complaints, it was excellent.

The main flight was OK but the second flight was chaotic with delays

the room on the plane was good but that is because flight not sold the other three seat and I had room. the food in terrible.

First the price I paid was excellent, my flight was full, but my seat was roomy. The one downside to the experience was they had games on the entertainment console. The guy behind me poked at my head about half the flight. I hope they get rid of this feature.

There were a lot of empty rows. As a single passenger I should not have been seated with 2 others. The WiFi didn’t work. The Kosher meal was awful.

They should. Heck planes more often not when they are suppose to be leaving causing delays

Thankfully not a full flight so although my headphone jack wasn’t working 100% on my window seat, I was able to move to the aisle seat. Food was fine, nothing great but tasty enough. Crew were friendly and made enough rounds. Always have a decent experience with Aer Lingus

Crew was fantastic got lovely food and plenty of water. Entertainment was good. Never had to ask for anything. Left on time and got to Seattle early. Luggage did not take long either.

Great hospitality and service! Seats are better cushioned then some

Great hospitality and service! Seats could always be cushioned better.

Customs is always a challenge. The customs officials were real humans, which was nice-not robots programmed on angry 😊. If you’re in a hurry to get through you’ll be stressed out. Allow yourselves plenty of time and it will be a stress free experience.

I got rerouted to another flight/city because the original flight was late and I would not have made my connection. I had to wait an additional five hours (no compensation) for the new flight which was also delayed because the computer was not working. Arrived at my final destination after nearly 20 hours of travel only to discover that my baggage had not arrived with me. Two days later and still waiting for my baggage. Customer service has been incredibly unhelpful and even hung up on me because I dared to ask for them to have someone call me when my bag arrived at the airport. No one apologized to me for what I experienced and they were dismissive of the fact that I have absolutely no clothes or toiletries. Absolutely awful, disorganized and stressful experience. Am dreading the return flight.

my original flight was cancelled the previous day, and i was rescheduled onto this flight, which left much earlier in the morning, impacting my previous evening and requiring me to get up much earlier in the morning to get to the airport online. This practice happens way way way too much, and it seems on every airline, though AA is probably the worst.

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

The flight was good the crew excellent…but take off delayed three hours!!!

Both mine and my husband's chairs were broken. Also it took 2 hours to get our bags after our flight which was wild.

perhaps eye contact with the cabin crew, instead of abruptness and an impatience to serve.

Not enough trash pickups throughout the flight. Everything else was great.

Overall good, the gluten free food is very hit/miss though and you must tell them you have an allergy days in advance.

All was good. The headphones they supply are of poor quality. The food is good but too much dairy.

Seating space was crowded and I am a very small woman.
