Flights from Europe to the United States: the best tips from KAYAK users

"If you're flying from Istanbul to Chicago, here are some tips to keep in mind: 1. *Choose a comfortable airline*: I recommend flying with Turkish Airlines or United Airlines, as they offer a relatively smooth and efficient boarding process. 2. *Be prepared for long flight*: The flight from Istanbul to Chicago can take around 10-11 hours, so make sure to bring entertainment, snacks, and comfortable clothing. 3. *Take advantage of in-flight amenities*: Both Turkish Airlines and United Airlines offer a range of in-flight amenities, including meals, drinks, and entertainment. 4. *Plan for jet lag*: Chicago is 8 hours behind Istanbul, so plan accordingly and try to adjust your sleep schedule before arrival. As for the boarding process, I found Turkish Airlines to be particularly comfortable and efficient. They offer: - *Priority boarding*: For passengers with special needs or priority status. - *Efficient queue management*: Turkish Airlines uses a well-organized queue system to minimize waiting times. - *Friendly staff*: The flight attendants and ground staff are always helpful and welcoming. Overall, with some planning and preparation, you can have a comfortable and enjoyable flight from Istanbul to Chicago!"

I recently flew with Turkish Airlines, and I can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment I boarded, the crew was incredibly attentive, warm, and professional. They went above and beyond to ensure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of throughout the flight. The highlight, however, was the food! I’ve flown with many airlines, but Turkish Airlines sets the bar incredibly high when it comes to in-flight dining. Every meal was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The variety of dishes, even on a long-haul flight, was impressive. It felt like dining at a high-end restaurant at 35,000 feet! The seats were comfortable, the entertainment options were great, and the overall atmosphere made the journey enjoyable. Turkish Airlines truly excels in combining luxury and hospitality. I wouldn’t hesitate to fly with them again—highly recommend!

Please consider improving the seating by providing basic yet ergonomically supportive options for passengers on long-haul flights. While luxury is not expected, seats that do not cause back pain during a nine-hour journey should be a minimum standard

Don’t fly Norse. Also always pack light. You won’t miss all the extra clothes and shoes, one set is fine, you can rewear items, but traveling light makes your whole travel experience so much easier!

KLM handles the boarding for Delta in Amsterdam. The boarding is a two steps process . First , their security will check the passport one more time , then KKM checks the boarding pass. It makes for a slow and unnecessarily tedious process. In the other hand , this is a direct flight to Detroit so the convenience of no layover may make it a worthwhile consideration.

Singapore airline or Thai airline have wonderful customer care and services. Of Istanbul will become a hub for travelers the flight attendance and airport personal might have some cultural training for other cultures that come aboard. It is important to show care or extra care for different costumers. With my large traveling experience I have noticed that people who provide customer services lack in a cultural training and care. Few personal stand out of the crowd but not too many to understand other cultures. Customer care industry is very difficult to make everyone happy but first the personnel have to try their best of the best.

Heathrow was surprisingly empty, not sure if I was just lucky with the time. My transfer from Vienna was seamless, I had enough time not to rush and not too much time to get bored. I did fly with a carry on which made my trip so much more enjoyable since my last trip to Vienna through Frankfurt was a nightmare both ways my luggage was left in Frankfurt . Stay in line, like we did, insist on getting the seats you choose and paid for originally. I did not back down in Rome, and refused to be put on stand by or bumped to Premium Economy. I would not recommend this airline because of the way we were treated at the airport. Both flights also boarded at least 40 mins later than stated and we had to stand there in a crowded line,
Verified travelerFlew with LufthansaMUC-DENNov 2024
Save up and go 1st class and please be aware you stand in line for Munich customs over 1 hour. The customs in Denver wasn’t that bad. There was a long line but they moved you through fairly quickly. I wouldn’t advise economy even after you upgrade your seat. It’s too cramped for such a long flight. I was miserable. It was a United A380 plane. I was bumped back to row 15.
CarloFlew with LufthansaFRA-PHLNov 2024
Expect delays and bad attitudes if you have a connecting international flight through Frankfurt. I have been through this process three times in the past 4 years, and the experience is the same. As airlines codeshare more and more, it is becoming increasingly frustrating flying. While this flight (five legs) was booked through Lufthansa, only two were operated by Lufthansa -- FRA to PEK and MUC to FRA. Two other legs (PHL to FRA and FRA to PHL) were operated by Discover and the leg from PEK to MUC was operated by Air China. Of the three airlines, I would rate Discover the lowest. The service provided by Discover is above that of Spirit, yet is subpar to most other airlines. Air China was good, yet is much lower in quality than Lufthansa. That said, when checking in at PEK for the trip back to PHL, the staff at the counter was VERY accommodating and put much effort into assisting me. As I flew through MUC and FRA, the Lufthansa and Discover staff in the airports seemed less friendly because I had checked in with Air China. The MUC to FRA was only an hour so not much on which to comment about that flight. The flight from FRA to PEK was operated by Lufthansa and there was a clear distinction in the quality of service.

People have to make sure they have plenty of time (2 hours minimum) if they need to change terminals. Heathrow is a monster airport, it's giant, so if you want to shop or eat or just look around, you need more than 2 hours between flights. Otherwise, it's great, the security was fast but thorough. I loved that I did not have to remove my shoes and the employees were patient and polite, not like at JFK. The shuttle buses are annoying, but at a huge airport like Heathrow, it's a must. The drivers of the shuttles are crazy, they don't care if people are falling down or not, they drive aggressively. However, people cannot fall down because the buses are packed to the gills. So, instead of shuttles, a looping airtrain would be a much more convenient and probably faster way of connecting the terminals, just like at JFK. The frequent flights between London and New York are much appreciated.

I’m a big fan of the airbus 350 but I found that this upgraded 747 was fabulous as well. Your premium economy provides actual significant improvement and legroom and the quality of the seat as opposed to Air France which premium economy is terrible. I built in extra time in case there were train delays. When I arrived in Frankfurt, the trains to Cologne were all delayed but about two hours. They are super strict on carry-on size and weight. I have never seen an airline weigh a carry-on before. If you are flying through Germany, make sure to alott yourself extra time to stand in a giant line for a passport check, even though it was already checked when boarding to Germany (not sure what could have changed with it during the flight!). They had given some of our seats away on our connecting flight because we barely made it to the gate in time for departure.

This is a good service to a smaller gateway airport. It's usually full. This service is why we selected BA. If you've prepaid for your seats be prepared for them to switch the plane configuration and reassign your seats. You'll have to apply for this refund too since it's not automatic. These refunds should be automatic not a chore for you to get your money back, especially when you have selected seats you personally want.

I would avoid PHL at all costs. The airport is poorly laid out and poorly staffed. I would choose a different airport for any connecting flight. They need to start over and make a world-class airport that is designed in a way that is not so spread out. There was lots of running between terminals.

We booked with American due to code share. Would try any other business class except British Airways.

Don't fly British airways. They are late and their response was not adequate for the circumstance.

Fine except the person next to me took up her seat had raised the arm divide so she spilled into my seat. because of her size. Fortunately no one was in the seat on my right so I could use part of it.

Fine except the person next to me took up her seat had raised the arm divide so she spilled into my seat. because of her size. Fortunately no one was in the seat on my right so I could use part of it.

Delta is my preferred airline. I've traveled with them for years. On time in most cases, good communication, easy to use app. Most planes are pretty nice. I was on a CRJ 700/900 however, which was pretty badly aged inside and needed a refresh. No infotainment, unreliable wifi, best to download before boarding or bring a book. Food choices are really just snacks on this flight, nice variety but about what you'd expect. Great staff and prompt in departure and early arrival too. Overall quite satisfied.

Crew was friendly Love the entertainment in the seat head rest.

Delta flight was on time, seats were comfortable, and crew was nice.

This had nothing to do with Delta… The flights were on time and flawless. The service was excellent. We purchased seats in (aisle/middle) comfort plus since this was a cross country flight. Unfortunately, the woman seated at the window was 300+ pounds and, as might be expected, covered up about a third of the middle seat also. there was absolutely nothing that Delta could have done about that… I just don’t know what the answer should be. If you purchase a seat, you should should be able to use the entire seat and not just the portion that someone else is not sitting/oozing in. Disappointing…there should be something that could be done….I'm just not sure what solution could be.

Delayed take-off. Very small plane so very scary with lots of bumps during the flight. Would never fly Delta on short flights in small 80 seaters plane again! Felt relieved when landed.

Delta is a cut above the others in customer service.

The worst part was I was NOT allowed in the lounge even though I was holding a first class ticket and have a premium American Express card. I have flown Business or First Class with many airlines. Delta is the ONLY one who does not extend this courtesy to anyone except people who hold the very expensive American Express card. As a result, I won’t fly Delta if I have any other choice.

A little bumpy ride . No food was being provided due the the turbulence. That was ok it was a short flight to my standards.

Simply outstanding. Their new lounge for Delta One customers is a cut above the rest.

Our flights got changed from United to Air Canada and our purchased seats did not get transferred so we had to pay for seats twice. I brought it up with Air Canada and they stated I had to go back and chase it with United. The united seats were $21 Canadian each and Air Canada were $56 each so we have paid $77 for each seat. Very unhappy

A bit rush for transit. Food and entertainment are not available

So far so good but food and entertainment are not available for this flight

Multiple delays and not straight answer from the United team

Stewardess spilled orange juice on my clothes/seat no help no apology just threw napkins at me to clean the mess up. Not Happy.

Smooth flight. Boarding was chaotic. Could not hear the gate agent over the intercom. People were lined up in the wrong lines. Groups one and two were told to board through line one and group 3 through line 2. All very confusing. Once in the air, the flight was smooth. There was no entertainment option on this aircraft, even though it was a larger aircraft.

The plane pushed back from the gate on time. However, it stopped on the ramp, and we waited for over 20 minutes before the aircraft pulled back to the gate. Apparently, something of importance had to be removed from the aircraft by the gate agent. I found this to be odd. The delay was not significant, but I felt that whatever was on the aircraft that had to be taken off, should’ve been done before we pushed back from the gate.

Electric plugs didn't work. Entertainment system wasn't working

The design of the light switch on the arm rest is ridiculous.

Smooth boarding process. Early departure, smooth flight, early arrival. The entertainment package has very good recent movie options. The flight crew were friendly and professional.

Paid $35 and not able to access the internet at all.

Several delays. Next flight was worse. Did not arrive home until 2am PT

Very helpful ground crew after an earlier flight delay and being rebooked on a different flight.

Everything about the flight was lovely…We left early, arrived early, cabin crew were efficient and helpful. Flight was easy and most pleasant.

First world problems, but still… We were seated in first class and asked for a cocktail on a very short, 50 minute flight. After our drink order was taken, a half hour went by, and we noticed that every other person in the small plane had been served except for us. We got up to ask about it, the drinks finally came, then were taken away three minutes later since the flight was so short. Really strange situation, on the other hand, we were in Utah.

We missed our flight. The boarding pass had the wrong gate and by the time we received the text from Kayak, our flight was already gone. I’ll never use Kayak again and will go direct to the airlines in the future.

Boarding took forever, the plane was cramped and cold, and the seatbelt song came on constantly throughout the red eye flight with a loud pre-recorded message playing each time

Cabin felt crammed Snacks are lame But crew was super efficient getting us out on time despite delay

Flight was delayed bc of mechanical issue. New plane had different configuration so some seats had to be switched. They called all passengers who needed new boarding cards. They did not call us so we thought our seats were the same and fine. When we boarded they informed us our receipts had changed and we are now all sitting separate and in the back row. Both my daughters had meltdowns and started to cry and once we got on the flight, we figured out how we could sit closer to each other, but this was very upsetting.

Took off on time and successfully avoided weather that looked to be a problem along the way

The plane was very clean. The bathroom was clean as well. The land crew were very polite and informative and helpful. They informed me that there is a long way and challenging to go from international terminal to national terminal and in addition to getting my suitcases and going through customs and dropping them again for my second leg of trip which was San Francisco to Los Angeles . I have left knee issue and had a recent fall with aching muscles all over, the land crew suggested wheelchair help for me, God bless her. If I did not have help, I could not make it to my last terminal. Thank you UNITED AIRLINE!

I like the service and the efficiency. I am lactose intolerant and the lactose intolerant meal in business class was not astounding. Also, the business class fully reclining seats are not that comfortable.

Food was great but they didn't clear my meal tray for 3 hours. You'd think they could check though the cabin now and then.

Upon arriving at IAH, it was informed that the luggage had not arrived. Still waiting to hear back when it will be delivered.

I wasn’t allowed to board with my children. I was charged outrageous costs for basic carry on size luggage. The entertainment screens were outdated and not user friendly.

I was very happy with everything, thank you for the smooth flight ✈️

helpful and friendly. The Lufthanza people I dealt with before my holiday were so unhelpful by comparison.

I enjoyed my flight back with Lufthansa because the food was good, and the flight attendants were nice and helped you when you asked a question. The flight attendants always came around and asked if you needed anything which I liked a lot.

Entertainment system is old. Food can be tastier Need to provide toothbrush and toothpaste at least when asked.

The flight was cancelled due to tech problem with the plane

Boarding is a mess. They never check group # so lots of people crowding in. Comfortable seats this flight. I had an empty seat next to me, very convenient. Food was really not good, but I was starved. The pizza snack thing was horrible. Crew was grand. They really make it enjoyable.

Too much long line at the TSA and Security. Prepare for long walk for baggage claim.

Crew very helpful and friendly. Food is so so. Main meal is not always the best. Did have a choice of a snack part way which was either a cookie, corn snack, or similar. Second kind of meal was basically like a pizza pastry that really wasn’t a favorite but probably a European snack? Screens and selections of movies, tv and such were good. No WI-Fi unless you buy so no free texting or such on the long flight but I think that might be any overseas flight.

The boarding process was quite loud and chaotic. The flight attendants kept barking over the PA system about people needing to only stow large items in the overhead bins. During the one and only service, I was hit by the service cart. At the same time, a passenger was returning from the bathroom and the crew definitely saw him but stopped a few seats short of allowing him to sit down before starting service and made him wait a good 10 minutes before passing his seat and allowing him to sit down, after which he had to ask for his snack and beverage or he would have been passed over. Neither flight attendant thanked passengers as they left; in fact, I did not see them again once the plane door was opened.

Flight Attendant Karen Lynn was an absolute delight. She assisted in every portion of the services provided throughout the flight, aided with any and all concerns expressed by passengers, and even helped comfort an upset child who was one of five of a traveling family. This quality of service is what keeps me coming back to American. Thank you!

The worst, flight cancelled because the aircraft was not full. Heathrow ground crew totally not helpful and arrogant. Lady proposed us flight with 40min layover instead of direct and said it is our problem of course she was unable to do anything as everything was beyond her control she claimed. after calling on hotline another flight was booked. Flight was cancelled last second so we could not take direct from Zurich but we had to stay overnight in London.

The seats in row 31 are terrible and small and uncomfortable. Don't ever sit there. The window seat is so close to the curve of the plane is so annoying. I paid extra for this seat and I hated all 10 hours in it.

Food was terrible , crew were excellent , IFE was dire . Overall comfortable seat and cabin. Nothing special .

If my tv wasn’t broken and I wasn’t in a seat that didn’t allow for sleeping

Delayed flight due to lack of crew caused me to miss my connection
